Now maybe I didn't interact with Kaidan enough, but how is he like Alistair? Kaidan seemed rather withdrawn and pretty serious. Alistair...is...loud and anything but serious. And Carth was just crap.

Strange... He's been a fairly good meat shield for my campaigns. What tactics do you have set for him?

Have never played NOTOR so i can't say i like
Carth.....(though most likely would have)....but I totally fell in love with
both Alistair:wub:  and Kaidan:wub:   to the point which has cause me the
inability to 1) Play through either game as a male character and 2) make choices
that effect those two in a negative way...

Darn you Bioware for creating two male npc so perfect (for me at least, i know
there are people out there that don't like either of them) that the hopeless
romantic in me will not let explore the other options in either
game........or maybe it should be a thank you.....gahhhhhhhhh!

Anyway I shall now return to my little world anxiously awaiting for Jan. 26 and
more Shenko!

I am a hopeless fan girl :innocent::P

Alistair is a lot cooler than Carth or Kaiden.

Carth was standard.

Kaiden was very ho-hum. However I always saved him anyway because it just seemed so obvious that Shepard would pick his love interest - I always tried to play ME as a movie and make shocking decisions.

Carth, Kaidan and Alistair indeed. I love all of them. As much as I love Sbarge's voice I wasn't too dissapointed about Alistair's. I haven't looked up his voice actor yet, but I'm quite fond of it.

On the flip side I also hate those three so much. They alaways manage to seduce me into being neutrel when I want to be evil.

Alistair's VA is Steve Valentine from Crossing Jordan. If you like Carth/Kaiden his VA was in a live action role recently on Heroes, as a Sheriff.

Steve's profile = http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0884313/

How is Kaidan ANY similar to Alistair?

kaidan is taciturn, stern, and introspective. Alistair is outspoken, insecure and jestish. if any, they're a complete opposites.

Yeah, Kaiden is a lot more introverted than Alistair. They both have the shy-guy thing, but that's about it. Oh, and they are both far better than the insanely annoying Carth. HK-47 summarized best what was so irritating about him: "I cannot trust you, Master! I will not trust you, or anyone EVER again!"

Alistair, for all of his flaws, is far better developed than either guy. Same with Morrigan compared to Bastila. I swear, if that romance ended the same way that it did with Bastila, I might have cringed a little. I'm glad it ended the way it did.

I don't think Shale nor HK-47 are basically evil; if one is made for killing by order it is hardly evil to do as one is made to do. If anything, Shale, with some remnant of a personality and self should be held to certain moral standards. HK-47, whilst perhaps acquiring a personality eventually, was still built from parts to machine with the design and purpose of killing those it was so ordered to kill. Though I suppose the possibility of sentience and free will developing in machines comes into play.

I see very little similar between Alistair and Kaidan. Alistair is an inexperienced man with a sob story, but not quite so horrible as he may tell everyone, who retreats into himself with sarcasm and a somewhat childish demeanor. Kaidan, however, was quite serious and had a strong moral code without it being so overbearing as to make one vomit. His sarcasm was strewn from a truly horrible upbringing and is dark enough in humor to actually be entertaining.

2 cents. >:3

I liked kaidan, he was withdrawn but would open up if you talked to him. He had a traumatic past but doesnt bring it up all the time and get annoying like carth. Alistair is definately the most fully realised of the three I think. Sometimes, Alistair also reminds me a little of ashley from mass effect 1 but I cant figure out why. Maybe its because they are both commited to following the player character.

wrex= sten? Maybe, but wrex is less one dimensional and actually jokes around sometime. They definately both have that stoic baddass warrior vibe.

I can see what's been said, though. I found him really quite useless for a bit, but he sort of gets better at times and then worse at others. I think Alastair's problem (and Wynne's for that matter) is the tactics menu does become necessary.

However, I swear it's broken for Wynne. I've set it so all she'll do is heal, there are no attack settings in it. In practise, she attacks. Many times I've seen Alastair/myself/whoever on <25% health and she's attacking away.

Kaidan is barely anything like Alastair IMHO. Kaidan's a bit whiny (he's the serious sort of whiny), poor background and so forth. Alastair's whiny but mostly in a comical way (see his dialogue with Wynne about his shirt), and he's had a relatively good upbringing.

I find it hard to compare though, as Dragon Age was miles better for characterisation. It actually matters what the PC does in relation to what your group thinks of you. Unlike ME where you can kill everyone and no-one bats an eyelid, Dragon Age makes you consider your options if you want to keep your party members in favour.

Oh man I hated Carth so much that he's the reason I never used Kaidan in Mass Effect, which is a shame because I'm using him on my latest playthrough and I actually kind of like him. Alistair is my favorite of the three.

I only just played ME for the first time --and it caused me to unfairly contrast the two chracters I suppose -- but Kaidan just did absolutely nothing for me. Compared to Alistair, there was virtually no personality there, and the "relationship" just felt so forced and awkward. With Alistair it's quite organic and natural and for all his flaws he still managed to win me over with his prudish shyness and self-deprecating humour.

The real deal-breaker for me though was when I watched my little bobble-headed Shepard pick Kaidan up and throw him over her shoulder. I'm not saying it's wrong for women to wear pants in the relationship but that doesn't give Kaidan free license wear a skirt!

DA:O did such a better job when it came to characters than ME1 I think. I was never remotely interested in Kaidan's story (or any ME character's story for that matter) as much as Alistair's or the other companions.

I've never played KOTOR so I can't say anything about Carth but perhaps at the end of the day the characters have these similarities because they're supposed to be the love interests of female characters. They all seem to need to be led around by a strong woman or they're just aimless. Same thing can kind of be said about Sky in Jade Empire though he never seemed as needy to me.

Atton > all three of them.  Atton didn't need to be witty or whiney (even though he had a trouble past).

BTW, Kaidan is nothing like Alistair or Carth.  He's way to quiet and reserved, unlike the other two character whom can get a bit hot-headed at times.  In fact, Ashley has more in common with the those characters.  Kaidan was pretty much calm, cool

i think Alistair is definitely the most interesting male generic first recruited character they've done.
