Edit:
Not sure about Oghren, I didn't bring him along. You're companions are pretty much silent, except Alistair.

It's maddening. I go through all that trouble to get evidence against Loghain when all I had to do was beat him in a duel.

I had every arl but one on my side, and Loghain threw a hissy fit and called them traitors, so I had to duel him and end it "honorably". Not that there was any other option.
alistair made the decision for me

See as far as I'm aware, you will always "lose" the Landsmeet. I managed to get fully half the houses to side with me and a duel at that point actually made sense.
I've won all votes but one. You can win the Landsmeet and then tell Loghain to step down and settle it with a duel. Then you can choose yourself or someone in your party to be your champion.

I feel ripped off - so, I went to hell and back (more or less literally) to gather evidence against the madman, and STILL I have to fight him in order to get the Landsmeet support - even though they rally behind me 4 or 5 to 1?
And Alistair... I won't even BEGIN to go into that. Ridiculous. :-(
That said, the real villain behind this civil war is killed when rescuing Anora. Finally gutting Arl Howe gave me a sense of satisfaction I haven't felt since I beat Jon Irenicus for the first time in BG2.

You feel so good about killing Howe but you mock Alistair for wanting to kill Loghain ?fkirenicus wrote...
The Landsmeet dialog options are unfortunately far below the standard in the game.

So consistent !
Agree with the rest, though. It's pretty tiring to have clichés-fest with duels being the real deciding factor. Why do they even bother to have laws and Landsmeet in the first place ?

Having the Landsmeet side with you means nothing once you're bleeding out on the floor. Which would be Loghain's goal; he's an old soldier, remember? You shouldn't expect anything less. "Think you're more fit than me to lead? Come here and prove it." And really, once you do, if you take him into your party (byebye, Alistair >_< ) he's really not a bad guy. Like you said, Howe was the bad guy and he's dead. Loghain probably didn't even KNOW half the stuff Howe was up to. What he did know was dismissable as "for the sake of the nation."

In the first run through I had Alister "set up" to marry anora, but made the mistake of letting him kill Loghain, so I chose Anora...Second run, I made the killing blow myself, and now the throne was a king, AND a queen
Make sure you get good evidence against Loghain before the meet, saving that lords son in the dungeon etc...secondly be as diplomatic as possible, Leave the wardens in general out of it, focus on Loghain's obsessions with Orillian invasions rather than a blight, slavery, kidnapping, etc and the lords should overwhelmingly support the Warden.

I think it was designed like that because people expect to be able to fight and beat the main villain.
Also I think it is a bit strange that you can overwhelmingly lose the Landsmeet politically. But then kill Loghain in a duel to take power. I wonder if the story could have branched out differently depending on whether you won the Landsmeet. Such as Loghain becoming King and you make temporary peace with him to defeat the Blight together.
