*huge spoiler*
thats why in the landsmeet Alistair's interuption really threw me off guard, after everything the group had gone through he wanted to kill Loghain after surrendering, a hero of his own god damn country... the man who led the charge at the battle of ther river dane...
all i wanted was a line to tell Alistair to shut up and do what i tell him, i seemed to be more of a leader / grey warden than he was... which bugged me to death

It's actually cute how he gloats over it while Morrigan is like "that's a religious question! WHO CARES!?".

This is the same hero who murdered Alistair's comrades and brother through conspiracy and inaction, and had the gall to smear the Grey Warden's names after the fact.
Again, how would you react?

And really though. I think Alistair had all right to hate Loghain. He killed everything Alistair loved and showed that he can not be trusted. Hell, he worked with slavers and allowed torturing of innocents and such. He pratically left the king, the rest of the grey wardens and you to die.
Loghain was no longer a hero. But a paranoid madman. He deserved nothing less than a swift death from my Mage. Possibly the only - along with the Tevinter Slaver Mage - character I killed and didn't peacefully end.

i acted like:
i was playing as a human noble... i couldn't let him kill the man who helped shape maric in to the king who drove the Orlaisians from Ferelden... so i asked Anora to let Alistair live as a favour to me and let Loghain join the grey wardens... it was the best decision to make at the time, if i had another choice i wouldve got Alistair to become king with anora, let loghain live to join the grey wardens, get him to kill the dragon and get my happy ending... but NOooOOo
at the end of the game though i let loghain redeem himself as the hero he had been, and he killed the arch demon... definately didnt want a god-like kid running around... thats just not a good thing to have...

I myself don't think Alistair is like Carth. Yes his circumstances are somewhat similar and he has the usual 'good guy' archetype or personality, which every story will have somewhere along the way and let's be honest, there's not one person alive who isn't whiny in some form lol
I've never played Mass Effect so I can't make a comparison there lol and I do like Alistair too, he has quickly become my favourite Bioware character, but everyone has different tastes, likes and dislikes

Alistair is very much like your best friend. I don't know how you could hate him.
I think that's exactly why Alistair is my favourite party member. It's frightening how alike he and my best friend actually are.
I have to disagree with everyone in this thread who thinks Alistair is like Carth, however. The only thing the two characters have in common is that they both play lead roles in their games.Alistair is a lot easier for your character to get along with,I think.Carth was whiny.

Alistair feels pretty real to me, I guess you could say. He doesn't want to be king because he has no idea of how to be one, doesn't think of himself as a leader, and acts more the role of support rather than leader. Not everyone is cut out to be a leader, after all. The only ones I think would make a good leader is Wynne, and possibly Sten, too.

On topic, you can get rid of Alistair. This is a spoiler however, just a warning. In the landsmeet, when you defeat Loghain in a duel, you can get Loghain to join you, which will cause Alistair to leave. Stupid trade if you ask me, but if you really dislike Alistair so much then do what you like.

How can you not like Alistair? Or Carth? Or Kaidan? I like them all. Morrigan, however, I do not like at all. She's mean and careless. I don't think it's fun when she teases Alistair, I wish my character could tell her to shut the f up, or leave.

You can also have him thrown in the dungeon and have him killed

You think Alistair should have stand out and claim the throne ? Only because he was Maric son ? So you found him annoying ? Then sorry to tell you that, you're wrong because your origin doesn't showed you the black side of Ferelden. Everyone respect your character only because you're the legal son of a noble family.
I played an elf mage then a human mage and I also tried human noble origin, I can tell the difference, how elves can be talked like trash and mages are like aboninations. Yes, aboninations, they're feared, so you lived all your life in a tower without going out till yu past a death tes...
Alistair had the same live as a mage, how the hell he should stand up and be proud to claim be king when he know how people didn't give a damn attention ? When he is forced by iarl Eamon to go on this stupid quest of becoming a king?? All Alistair wanted is to fight the Blight, he never wanted to become a king, but he has a good a heart, I know you can support him to stand up and become a king.
Siding with Loghain ? Don't make laugh! I don't care about his past but that guy try to kill me during all the game. There is no way, I will forgive him about "poisoning" my journey, forced Jowan to poison the Iarl Eamon and making civil wars when the bligh are at his doors.
Sound so wrong!

Loghain might be a hero. He might be responsible for freeing the country from foreign rule (and I've read the book. He's more responsible in a lot of ways than Maric was). On the other hand?
He was bestest buddies with the man who killed your parents. I'm not far enough along in the game to know, but I suspect he even either organized it or gave it his approval to make sure that one of his main rivals (remember, dad wasn't some minor noble. He was the third most powerful man in the country) was out of the way.
As far as my human noble is concerned? Everyone responsible for that dies. Hero or not.

@Livemmo : great, only because you played a noble man, you're think like that and you can't understand, till you may play a lower cast / character who never had any respect in his life like mage or elves or poor dwarves.

Actually Loghain was my favorite character in the game. He did what he believed and never second guessed his actions. Would you send your entire army into a battle that couldnt be won only to have them slaughtered? no, you retreat and live to fight another day. King Cailen believed so much in the Grey Wardens that numbers ment nothing to him. His own stupidity did kill him and Loghain believes that which is why he hates the Grey Wardens. He doesnt try to make a civil war, he tries to prevent one. The man knows you cant fight the blight with a divided army. Was he a bad man? No, in my oppinion he wasnt. He his way of thinking and didnt need to listen to anyone else to act. He may have his flaws just like everyone else, but just because the story says hes a bad man doesnt mean his intentions were evil in any way.
As for Allister, yes I do think he shouldve stood up and claimed the throne. Its his duty to do so. It's his blood. I dont care if he wanted to or not if he's of royal blood he needs to do it. He chose not to so he was hung. Why is that a problem? In return I get a powerful tactical mind as well as a hell of a tank in Loghain, we stop the blight, and the real queen who knows how to run her kingdom stays queen. I'll side with Loghain everytime no matter how many times he tried to kill me because its for the best. Nobody needs a king with an empty head that can only run around and makes swooping jokes.

I completely agree. I held him just as responsible, if not more, than Howe. Grrr... I was happy when I saw his blood spray all over his daughter. Perhaps also because I hated her
