I'm excited. I've often thought BW has gotten too focused on choices (one of their primary game design philosophies) and in doing such, their storytelling has been compromised.

I would rather have fewer squadmates, fewer love interests and fewer story-changing choices if it means the main story arcs will be more compelling and better delivered.

ie. i thought the very linear story arc of "demons are coming, better get ready" in the first 3 hours and continuing for the next 80 hours of DAO was very dull and bland. hopefully this will allow DA2 to deliver a much better story.

^ Yes and no. Understand that what you just asked for in your post is FFXIII, except with a western medieval story. FF games are generally linear with a main character who's background is developed and structured.

Except for people like me, when I think about western RPGs I don't want the set in stone archetype. I want the unnamed hero. I want to choose from 457298742194 different races and 879472147 different classes to create a UNIQUE persona. I don't want a canned product.

I like FF games. But understand that you can't role play Lightning. She is who she is. If all I get to choose in DA2 is "Hawke", even if I can play good Hawke or evil Hawke, he's still JUST HAWKE! He's not me. And it's not the experience I've come to expect, especially from Bioware.

Sorry, but to me this idea is pure fail. I don't even need to see a trailer or gameplay footage. The whole concept is a step backwards. Or if not a step backwards, then a definite step towards making a game more like JRPGs which Bioware has railed against in the past. Sad....

Agreed,
I'd rather define my role than have it defined for me. Though race and class had their orgin restrictions in DAO it still allowed for a great deal of variety and personalizing. About the only thing that ever tempted me to purchase the PC version of the game (I own the PS3 version) is the greater variety in character creation it offered. More choices, not less is what i desire. I suspect "Hawke" is a cost savings move to allow them to render only one image for the player character. I am disapointed in this decision.

no offense but saying a defined game is somehow similar to a JRPG is nonsense. there are literally thousands of western games that have defined stories and characters that have nothing to do with the eastern market. furthermore, if you want choices and distinct options, that is fine, but that is not an antithesis to JRPGs. in fact, JRPGS are irrelevant and moot in this discussion. this is simply a game design choice. it is also one that i agree with.

i rather have great storytelling than a dozen good options.

I think, just to be pedantic (and to be lynched by the entire community), it should be the announcement of a countdown to the announcement of the next countdown, and THAT countdown will be to the next Twitter announcement of a countdown. Tee hee. :P

You're very blunt, good sir. :P
