You just harden him so you don't get a disapproval for doing questionable actions. Same with Leli...plus she'll join the um...revelry at the Pearl if you harden her. I don't think Alistair revels much either way. Too bad there's not much you can to solve Morrigan's issues...short of chopping off her head(oh meh gawds Circle mages are evvvil and i'm going to pick a fight with them while we're here in the tower).

So will Alistair if hardened (pun intended)

No, he does not become bad or evil, he just stands up for himself better.

He is technically a bastard, though.

And a Royal Bastard at that !Posted Image

Anymore I usually harden Alistair and make him king, since that is the "correct" way to play it. And it is a happy ending for everyone, but to me Alistair doesn't really seem to care about your Warden as much in the epilogue. My favorite ending I did was the first game I finished and I kept Alistair unhardened and in the Wardens and my Warden did the US. His epilogue said that after my Warden was buried Alistair made sure everyone honored his memory and after awhile left the Wardens because it just wasn't the same anymore. It was something like that...it's been awhile. Anyway, while not the happiest ending for Alistair, it certainly made it feel like my PC was actually important to him instead of him becoming King and my Warden never being mentioned by him again (when doing the US).

What makes you think King Alistair is the 'correct' way of playing or that there even is one? I mean, a non-King Alistair with Loghain still alive is a pretty bad ending for him but kill Loghain and he's perfectly happy staying a Warden, particularly if unhardened.

Everyone has their own idea about what the game 'intends'. We al know what the guy meant. Let's not get sidetracked by a poor choice of words.

I wasn't trying to nitpick what he said. I was just curious why he felt that it was what you were supposed to do.

In my opinion, any attempt to present one ending as more correct or more true than another is just missing the whole point. Everyone has their story and it's true for them. No end is worth more than another.

Everyone has their own opinion about the best ending, and how story structure works. Together that gives us a feeling about what we personally consider 'canon.' The guy wasn't saying anyone else was wrong, just that he personally felt that one was most 'right.' Do we really have to flog this?

It's not flogging it! If that was what he meant then I clearly misinterpreted it, not decided to be a **** about his word choice.

That was actually more to Xandur than you, but I really don't think the guy intended to say that anyone else was playing the game wrong.

Yes in fact he'll be an unstoppable killing machine, he'll want to kill the elves and side with the werewolves and if you make him king he orders Anora, Arl Eamon and most of the nobles in the Landsmeet killed. Then when you find out about the ultimate sacrifice he'll look right at the warden and says "You do it I'm gonna be king you're just a filthy peasant and or Elf." When you suggest the dark ritual to him he jumps at the chance and swaggers into the room with Morrigan to force himself on her and she's all like "No Alistair not like this, not like this!" Then at the end he takes all the credit and tells everyone he banged a witch and had a demon baby and there "Ain't nothing all y'all can do about it, I'm King Alistair baby and it's good to be the chief!"

Needless to say it's a less than ideal ending! Plus he tried to steal Leliana from my Warden and killed Zevran in his sleep! :o

You need to write for sitcoms. This was the best laugh I've had in days.

LOL! I missed a whole convo about me! What I meant was that most people seem to like this ending the most including the writers that make it canon in Awakening. That is what I meant by "correct" ending. It is not my favorite ending personally (I like leaving Alistair an unhardened Warden).

Question here, totally unrelated to the current convo, but wasn't sure where to post it (didn't want to go to the Alistair gush thread since I think I'd get murdered).

With just doing the opening, Lothering and the Mage Tower, and never having asked Alistair about Duncan, I have him at a -73 Hostile approval. (I was at -75, but I decided after playing 'Leave RedCliff to the zombies' I couldn't handle Teagan's 'You're and a just and noble lady' comment after freeing the castle and killing connor, so I reloaded.....and decided to save Redcliff)

I take it, you never get the chance to harden him if he's at that low of approval? Or does getting him to -100 approval harden him in some way?

No, at -100 he gives you the famous hate speech (and he's hot when he's mad).

He can only be hardened if you get his personal quest (you may not if your approval is too low) and if you reaffirm this in a dialogue that will only appear at 71 approval. So no hardened Alistair on a hate playthrough unless you get him up to 71 first, harden him and then ****** him off royally.

Great! That's what I needed to know.

I'll have a hatefull unhardened Alistair this game then.
