So a few months ago I replaced my old Nvidia 8800GTS with a ATI Saphire Radeon 5850 TOXIC. Yesterday and today I tried replaying ME1 for old timesakes and the graphics look horrible. I've tried rescanning my system using the tool from the launcher, I've tried forcing AA from both the CCC and ATI Tray Tools. I've even reinstalled the game from scratch. I'm out of ideas.
Now let me be more clear on my defenition of horrible. The faces have no "features" to them. They look smooth, with no details and finess. The outfits and uniforms are pixelated and blocky. It's like I'm running the game on the lowest settings possible at 640x480 resolution. I remembered this game looking quite gorgeous on my old 8800.
Got any ideas?
Here's the rest of my specs:
Q6600 @ 2.4 GHZ
4GB of DDR2 Ram
Tried to play ME after video card upgrade, graphics look horrid

Sometimes changing the in-game settings only works after restarting the game. Have you tried that?

Did you try rebuilding the Shader cache from within the Mass Effect Configuration Utility?

Did you run driver sweeper after uninstalling the Nvidia drivers?
Switching between sides is always tricky.

Indeed I did. I also did try restarting the game after changing settings.
How do I rebuild the shader cache?

By running the Mass Effect Configuration Utility and select Repair.

ok, well it partly worked. it fixed the faces and other things. But some of the armor suits and clothes still look blocky. Maybe its just this games age showing.

Perhaps, perhaps not.Hyperion184 wrote...

Are you running the latest graphics drivers, and if so, have you tried any older ones?

I'm using cat 10.5 IIRC. Haven't tried older because of issues with other games I play (APB, BFBC2, GTA4).

That's just because a lot of the clothing/armor textures for npcs are very low-res. Unless you get blocky textures on your character's armor (which have higher-res textures), I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, I don't remember actually seeing anything I could call blocky. Perhaps some not so nice resolution textures, but the model geometry was good.
You know, I'm thinking it could be a messed up setting. This kind of thing has happened to me and to other people as well, and this kind of problem comes in a variety of different exciting flavours.
The one I believe to be the most common, can be solved by editing one of the lines in the ME .ini file. Open that file, and search for a line with the word "detail" that should be the line for the detail setting. See what the detail number is set to. Max should be either 3 or 4, I can't remember well. If it's lower, edit the number manually and see if it works.
If you're getting any other issues, such as messed up texture filtering, I can help you with that.
