I don't know about anyone else but when I saw on the web site "new art style" my heart sank. I would really hate to see the game turn cartoony and cell shaded when it was a very serious and gritty looking game before. Hopefully it's not too much of a change, because that would definitely lessen my hype, maybe even more than the fact we don't get to play as our own hero from DA1.

Change in art style doesn't mean cel shaded. It's probably more the inevitable consequence of a change/improvement in the engine than a deliberate choice to make things look different.

Stylized games definitely age better in the long run. Hell, DA1 looked dated when it came out.

I would hope so, but in these days where new art style means completely new art style. I mean look at Borderlands when they said that it would get a new art style. I hope I'm overreacting, and I can't wait to see the screenshots in GI when I get it.

The art is just that ART. First Morrigan artwork for DA didn't look anything like Morrigan ingame so I don't see why worry.

Haha I did say I hoped to be overreacting. I will say that Gears of War 2 got a new art style and by that they meant they gave it movie lighting which improved the cinematic look of the game. So let's hope!

The art you see is concept art my friend. For them to jump from a full 3d graphics game to a cell shaded game would be practically unheard of. All concept art never looks like the actual game footage, that's why it's concept art. Enjoy the art and wait patiently for game footage. :)

No I know what concept art is and what it looks like, I'm talking about in the paragraph where it says "Discover a whole realm rendered in stunning detail with updated graphics and a new visual style."

I wouldn't mind a stylised game, actually. The 2008 Prince of Persia was stunning, so I'm not sure why everyone seems to hate cel-shading so much.

I doubt it means cel-shading although I think it would put me off a great deal if they went that route. I'm just hoping that if anything it gets darker and more bleak.

A new art style could be a good thing depending on which direction it takes. DA suffered from a serious case of drabness. I'm not expecting an explosion of color, and maybe that would be inappropriate depending on what DA2 is like, but a new style could help liven up the game. Origins was often panned for its graphics so it's better than leaving things as is.

Yeah but that was kind of a side project of the whole PoP series. Since this is a numbered sequel of the DA series and like not DA (Enter Subtitle here) I would want it to continue the series' style.

They all ready said in an interview earlier this year that one of the major improvements in DA2 would be the graphics so thats probably what theyre talking about.

I like more stylised art styles. I agree with the above poster, they definately age better. They also can make games look better without requiring better graphical quality (just look at WoW).

However, I hope it's not excessively stylised to the extent of Zelda: Wind Waker, and I doubt it will be.

The first game took a long time to make apparently so I think since they started it such a long time ago they might want to update the graphics and art style a little or something.

I imagine they mean that it's a new graphic engine, with actual colors instead of just brown, gray and occasionally blue or purple.

And buckets of red.

No way in hell that it's a new engine. It takes years to design a new engine.

I really like the art style of DA:O too :( It was very gritty IMO and it made the fact a Blight was upon us all the more believable for me. I also thought the graphic quality of the game was pretty good, only thing that ever annoyed me was the outlining around the hair in conversations.

It will be the same engine, for sure. That's why they can release it so quickly.

As for the new art style, it will likely be more stylized, which is sad, but hopefully it won't be too exaggerated.

Just look at leliana's song to see the weird things they can do with graphics in that engine. I doubt they'll have problems accomodating stylized art.

Personally I prefer more stylized visuals.

You can get a hell of a lot more visual eye candy for less processing power/development time when you play your cards right.

New graphics sounds like a GREAT thing to me, one of the only bad things I can think of in Origins was that the graphics were less than spectacular.

Now, please give us some screenshots, dear BioWare. Anything is fine.

Actually, it probably will be a new engine. They said they were going to really improve the graphics, and I remember a designer who worked on Awakening said the engine had been pushed to its limits. New art style and a new combat system means new engine, most likely.
