it looks like old boy is holding some sort of spear.

adding a new weapon class like a spear, into a game with a heavy dragon theme = probably going to be a $#it ton of dragon hunting :bandit:

Providing medium range combat for warriors?

...sure why not. A lot of games can't find a place to put Spears though. They're hard to classify though. Perhaps this thread can supply ideas on how to use them or compare them to how existing games have used them (in negative or positive light).

I'm not against the idea of another class of weapons (in fact, I favor it greatly) but what would be its strengths and weaknesses? Why should I pick this over swords and shields?

Well some spears can provided greater reach... maybe with a spear equipped you can stab your opponent from a distance while they can't retaliate.

Maybe real halberds? Halberds seem like more appropriate weaponry for fighting big beasties like dragons than swords or short-lances, plus they can be thrown and retrieved.

Here's hoping!
Not to mention that old Girl's staff (concept art) looks like it has a bladed end.
Maybe some staff combat for the mages?
General Polearm skills to go around?

Hate to post again but my brain went into overdrive with happy spear related thoughts.

If we break melee weapons down into 4 features the polearms can fit in there quite well
Reach=Pole
Defense=Sword+Board
Damage=2Hand
Speed=Dual

Plus they could simply add them into the existing weapons limitations.
Warrior=Sword, Dual, 2Hand, Pole
Rogues=Dual+Archer
Mages=Pole, Staff
