Why? Why not just play the other games that are already like that? No one makes these kinds of true stat and tactical combat based RPGs any more. Why kill the few that are left?

No more action games! No more shooters! There's tons of them, and there's tons of them already in production. I don't want another same-old-same-old game that does everything just like all the other big customer chasers. I bought DA because it is what it is. I bought ME2 because it is what it is. If one starts to be like the other, there's little reason for me to buy both, and very little reason for me to continue being a fan of BioWare games.

I take it to mean that you will simply have more control over your character's actions. And "think like a general" leads me to believe you'll have more control over your party as well.

Good point.  "Think like a general" suggests tactical combat and party control to me, while "fight like a Spartan" suggests more of an in-the-action, character focused approach.

If both of those are present, it suggests that they are refining and developing DAO's combat (in which you could focus on your character or zoom out for tactical combat), rather than changing it totally.

And that is what I would prefer, so I hope I'm not just engaging in wishful thinking.

It's way to early to speak doom and gloom like that. But what's been said so far does throw up some red flags and makes me very nervous.

Never mind Dragon Age 2! Look at this terrifying bit of information I just found on the Dragon Age: Origins website:
  • Engage in bone-crushing, visceral combat against massive and terrifying creatures
Based on this line, I have no choice but to conclude that EA is about to retroactively transform DA:O into a first-person shooter akin to Mortal Kombat! We must start a petition at once to prevent this!

Yeah, like I said, no doom and gloom. But there's still room enough to be plenty nervous.

Well, I love both twitch-based gameplay and more tactical gameplay like BG and DA:O and I would love a mix of the two, something like Demon Souls, with a lot of depth and challenge. A Demon Souls twitch-based combat system with companions and pausing would be simply amazing, imo. If they turn it into a mindless hack n slash, then yes, I'd be very disappointed. I enjoyed DA:O's combat for what it was, but I would be content with them trying something new.

"Think like a general and fight like a Spartan

This clearly means all warriors will wear nothing but loincloths and helmets, but they carry a really, really big shield.

It also means we get spears. I saw 300

Finishing move of kicking people into giant pits or off cliffs while screaming "THIS. IS. SPARTA!" ... priceless.

Different strokes for different folks. If BioWare is going to stop making games that fulfill the needs of their old fans, their old fans are all going to leave.

AMEN.

I'm willing to give this a chance, but I'm not impressed thus far. If it abandons what made DAO a good game infavor of "streamlining" away features for the sake of your Gears of War and 300 fans, BioWare will be dead to me. Hyperbole? Sure, but DA was supposed to be a throw back to Baldur's Gate. The DA2 stuff so far released looks like a Diablo/Fable style hack and slash.

Remember Nightmare Creatures for the Playstation?

This talk about 'Buzzword Buzzword COMBAT' just makes me think of that game.

Well, I'll take up the doom and gloom banner a bit early then. I'm perfectly willing to hear out BioWare on this game, but the overall tone and feel from everything released makes me think they're taking more from ME and 300 and not BG.

And that makes me sad:crying:

I hope it goes more of the route of "Fable II" combat. In that game I felt like I was actually fighting and not someone off screen who's shouting commands to my characters and then watching them react.

Well the blurb "Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior" is ...odd.

No doom and gloom, but didn't DA put us the heart of the battle? And of course something about combat will change, unless they have a different definition of the word new. I'm thinking that putting you any further into the heart of battle would have to be akin to an action RPG/ME style of play. Not sure why it really needs a new style of combat, but whatever.

I can understand the concern though. While a great game, DAO already strayed as far as you can from a BG style of play and remain in that style. So, I personally wouldn't want it to go any further.

I'm having trouble keeping Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance out of my mind, which was fun in its own way but.....uh oh..

Of course over analyzing marketing blurble is never really a good thing.

Dragon Age's combat was fun at first, got static and boring real fast.

Mass Effect with swords.

Yep, and watch it destroy the original Dragon Age in terms of bringing new fans in, making money, and being an enjoyable and memorable gaming experience.

I agree, I am such a fan of Baldur's Gate II and realy thought another game needed that style of combat until I played Dragon Age and realized how dated the whole formula feels. I haven't played Baldur's Gate II in years, but Im afraid to now because I feel I might find it boring. Image IPB

We don't really know what it means.

However, the "think like a general" part seems to imply that the combat will still have a tactical element, which is exactly what DAO has today.

So my thinking is that DA2 will still have DAO's tactical combat, but that there will be many more "flamboyant" moves in the style of 300.

Remember what happens when we kill an Ogre in DAO? I'm guessing that we will be seeing a lot more moves like that, while still retaining the tactical combat.

So, same combat, only more flamboyant and spectacular (and now we can use polearms as well).

By that logic Diablo was better than BG2 because it sold more units.

And I'm replaying BG2 right now. It takes a few to get back into the mindset of the top-down view and the old, old DND system, but it's still fun as hell with a fantastic story that keeps you going. I'm in the Underdark already and looking forward to pushing into Throne of Bhaal again.

That said, I certainly hope they don't go more action-RPG.

I mean, I love ME2 as an action RPG, but the whole point of Dragon Age is that it harkened back to old school RPGs in the style of Baldur's Gate. I'd be sorry to see that go away, especially when DAO proved there is still a market for it.

I dont think that a game selling more makes it better, however I do think that the changes they seem to be making are going to make it a better game than the first, no matter how much it sells.

[whispering to Abispa]: Ssshhhh.... What are you thinking!!! Don't even say the words "Fable II" on these boards. These folks are RPG ninjas, they will gather a hunting party and track you down with their staffs and potions and stuff. These people spend all their lives perusing through codexes, tactics, statistics, item customization, weapon upgrading, potion management. You have no idea what they can do to us, mere mortals...

Fable II was fun. Fable III is on the way. BioWare doesn't need to make a Fable III clone.

Quite a few of us have been burned by EA before, their reputation in the gaming world is what it is for a reason. If DAO2 turns out to be a hack and slash button masher, I doubt very many people familiar with EA's modus operandi would be very surprised. It's also why there is concern that may be the case I assume.
