To me, this sounds like a de-emphasis on the tactical overhead combat
style from my PC experience and a movement towards twitchy, action
based console gameplay.

But I'm probably just being paranoid.

wow. talk about jumping to conclusions. all it means to me is that they're updating it, like any good sequel does. They're not going to change it completely. They're going to improve it. The fact that there are still warriors, rogues, and mages should tell you that.

While I agree he's jumping to conclusions, I must say I had the same feeling when I first saw the phrase on the new site.

If anything needs change in dragon age combat, it's NOT a de-emphasis on the tactical aspect of the PC version. Everyone and their mothers agree, the PC version is better by miles because of the better combat alone. In fact, my fear is not exactly that it's "toned down" - my fear is they choose to make de PC version of DA2 as shallow (tactics-wise) as the console version of DA1 "not to angry the console fans". Guess what, I have a PS3 too. I like my DA in the PC, tough. Time to stop the fanboyism and choose to make the best game for each platform, not equal games at the expense of great things cut off not to bother someone. I miss the Genesis vs Snes generation, gosh.

But back on the topic: The game takes too long while your party is in battles? Make less enemies, but more interesting encounters. The blood mage stronghouse in the first game is a great example of good design, rooms that require mind usage to clear, not just cheer power. Make more of those and less filler cannon-fodder; and, please, some bosses that are NOT dragons, the other creatures (like broodmothers and, to a lesser extent, revenants) are so cool, dragons are cool too, but because there are tons, it just looses the impact.

Also, please make the AI a little less dumb for rogues. Having to manually position them for backstabs EVERY FIGHT gets pretty boring, pretty fast. I end up making every rogue a ranger with bow and a pet because of it, and I love melee rogues, flavor-wise.

It means they've turned it into an action/adventure rts hybrid.

What this means to me is combat will be more ME2-ish than DA:Oish.

Bioware please don't kill the game!!!! We want a classic RPG, with a strategic combat system and isometric camera!!!!

DAO is perfect or quite. simplify the combat system or insert action element change the structure.!!!

For DAO you say "it's a Baldur's Gate successor". Now??? "It's mass effect successor??", maybe it's a new magic console style view!! :(

Pleas don't kill the game!!

Maybe it will be a diablo sucessor if they really adopt hack and slash

I think it sounds infinitely interesting. The biggest qualm I had with DA:O is that if I made a rogue or a mage I was never really playing *my* character as I spent most of my time as the tank trying to keep aggro on the mobs. But that's just me...

[whispering to Abispa]: Ssshhhh.... What are you thinking!!! Don't even say the words "Fable II" on these boards. These folks are RPG ninjas, they will gather a hunting party and track you down with their staffs and potions and stuff. These people spend all their lives perusing through codexes, tactics, statistics, item customization, weapon upgrading, potion management. You have no idea what they can do to us, mere mortals...

Relax. We don't take Fable II fans seriously.

Personally, I'm hoping for gameplay similar to Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

Quite a few of us have been burned by EA before, their reputation in the gaming world is what it is for a reason. If DAO2 turns out to be a hack and slash button masher, I doubt very many people familiar with EA's modus operandi would be very surprised. It's also why there is concern that may be the case I assume.

EA's gotten better over the years, it's no longer the beast it once was.

Activison stole that title.

This can only mean phalanx-based combat.  Good news for the art team: only spears, daggers and little shields are needed.

This line also made me a bit nervous. I don't mind fast-paced action, but in all action-oriented Bioware games so far (Jade Empire, Mass Effect), the focus on action also meant that you didn't have direct control over your party any more like you do in Baldur's Gate, KotOR in Dragon Age. The clunky party command overlay from Mass Effect was especially painful to use. I always felt that these games suffered from this decision (even though they were still great in many other aspects), as the party is one of the most important features of Bioware games to me.

I like the combat in Mass Effect. I like hack and slash, and I like shooters too. But I love the combat in games like Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age. I would be disappointed as hell if they made it more arcadey. Actually, going back to the tactical, party based combat of older RPGs is the number one thing DA:O had going for it.

I hope that the quote "Think like a general," is foreshadowing even more depth in the tactical side of the combat. Adding terrain modifiers like high ground and seriously improving the AI would be huge improvements imo.

I don't play Bioware games for the crappy combat, I play them for the story and the dialogue.

Hell, the combat could be in a FPS style and I wouldn't mind if it let me get through the combat faster.

I think it means that you can still order your companions around while overlooking the battlefield, but also control a certain character that you have selected in third person mode, using the mouse buttons to slash, stab, or blast your enemies with spells and using the mouse wheel to change attacks.

I REALLY hope combat is as tactical, that was the main strong point of DA:O for me.

I'm less worried about this than I should be really. Planning on staying that way until we see some gameplay, not just read some PR line the Hype Machine pumped out.

Well we will have to see what comes, its a shame the warden aint back but hopefully we get to import the saves to change the background a bit. And well considering the point of this thread: DAO's combat was allright when played from the top down perspective but once you were in the 3rd person it just felt really weird to give the character commands to do move X or Y instead of controlling him or her directly.

If they could incorporate that you can play from above in a tactical manner to give commands to the party and then control your pc more or less directly I would welcome it. A throwback to games like hidden & dangerous if anyone remembers that good old tactical shooter that you could play as a 3rd or first person shooter or even allow the AI to act out commands you gave on a tactical view and have the soldiers shoot depending on their personal stats. Shame the series died, perhaps DA2 could bring that sort of hybrid gameplay back and do it well?

The amount of gloom here might just be overproportioned for the amount of info we have. Unless bioware got themselves really screwed in the head we wont get a diablo clone, and frankly a diablo clone with good story and choices that matter does not sound that incredibly bad? Its a bioware game, most of us come for the story not the combat ^^
Only 10 days till we know more, keep the hope alive :wizard:

Action and Fantasy Collide in BioWare’s Dragon Age 2

Son of a.... why do they have to use that language?! It just makes me more afraid this game is going to be restructured after ME2.

Agree 100%. For me it pretty much says any chance of getting anything like Baldur's gate 2 ever again from Bioware is zero and those days and gone for good. Apparently everything have to be straight up action these days to sell, even RPGs.

To me, it doesn't matter what they change about the gameplay. The reason I play Bioware games is for the strong writing. Without that, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed Dragon Age.

That press release makes the game sound utterly horrible. I really hope it'll still have some full tactical combat, not that half-assed Mass Effect stuff where you could only tell your party members the vague direction in which they should move and use one or two samey abilities on occasion...

Also,

Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC.

Doesn't sound like they plan on making this a game that utilizes the strengths of the PC. I mean, the PC isn't even an entertainment system! :?

Dragon Age sold quite a few more copies than Mass Effect 2, so I don't understand why they would change the game to be more action oriented.

I mean if they do change it to be more action oriented, they can count me out.
