I thought the covers for Mass Effect 1 and 2 were terrible, by having Sheperd as Generio Male on the cover it was a little offputting, if they had just placed the Citadel, the Normandy and some character outlines, then that would have been fine.

I loved the Jade Empire cover, it was beautiful and gave the Asian/Eastern feeling when looking at it, same with the KOTOR covers, they were very nice. And Dragon Age's red dragon on a white background was very striking, much nicer than the one shown for DA2.

Because it has a male on the cover? If that's your reason for thinking I see this thread isn't going anywhere.

No, it was just an ugly cover, for both games.  Just showing some generic male look to Shepard made the game look like yet another mindless shooter with a male only character and didn't show that the game was an RPG/shooter mix with a choice of gender and the chance to create the facial appearance of Shepard.
It's why just showing the Citadel, Normandy and character outlines would have looked nicer, made it look like less of another mindless shooter.

*I'm talking about the Dragon Age 2 cover*

The Dragon Age 2 cover, so far since it's likely a work in progress, is somewhat misleading after DA1's cover.  It shows a generic male, so the automatic thought is 'Oh, so they've turned it into a generio male hack and slash', due to how many games tend to show the male on the cover without mentioning a female character, like Divinity 2 for example shows a male dragon slayer, no female, so it's hard to tell what the game is like in terms of gender choice, which it thankfully has, and what the game is like.
Not even the back of the box helps in any way.

Caterling to the male demographic can be misleading if all that's shown is the male, but not an example that there's a gender choice.  So to avoid that it should be a striking, if plain looking cover like DA1's, plain, but striking due to the use of the red and white.
That's how the DA2 cover should look, not showing some generio male, since that's misleading, but just having the dragon, the white background and character outlines.

The choice of gender, the female character and more should be promoted more for games that have that, such a rare thing with many games, instead of just showing a male.  It's not just males who game, frankly it's never been that way, it's just awkward for female gamers since horny males tend to jump them instantly.
It's like they've never seen a woman before.

I agree with all of this. I'm sure they will have that information on the back of the box rather than the front.

What is a generic male exactly? The guy looks like a barbarian.

I hope they'll mention the gender choice and character creation this time on the box, of course that might make insecure males unhappy if they see 'Play as male or female', but so what, if a female gamer or a woman who's interested in gaming sees that, then that could be an instant buy for them along with the hopes of being immersed in a story.

For me a generic male is a skin head/shaven top male who looks like he spends more time being drunk and worshipping football than anything else, there are plenty of those where I live.
Sometimes it's like seeing clones.

The first time I saw the DA1 cover, it was an instant 'That's nice' because it was so striking and such a simple look, just a red dragon on a while background, and it worked beautifully.  Even after ordering it after it's release and taking it out of it's packaging, I just looked at the box cover for a couple of minutes letting my imagination run wild, the cover didn't give any clues, any hints at all and that helped a lot.
Once I started playing the game I was hooked, and all because the cover didn't give much away beyond the red dragon on a white background.  A very uncluttered cover, and still a lovely one to look at.

So now we are feminatsis for wanting a little more representation in the marketing? My gawd, people are dumb.

Absolutely not. I am completely with you on this - I find it irritating that every ad for a new AAA game features the same dark and brooding male protagonist as well. Some variety would be nice. Hell, I wouldn't mind if Hawke was a set female character so long as the game was good.

All I'm saying is that given the current environment, advertising in the game industry is catered to kids or morons. Look at the trailers for Origins or Mass Effect 2, they were pretty damn cringeworthy.

But seriously, its harder to picture a badass female than it is to picture a badass male.

For some people, but seriously, it's not that hard at all. Perhaps it's even easier if you watch some Xena, Aliens, Terminator, Buffy, a bunch of martial arts movies (I particularly love Michelle Yeoh), and I could go on if you'd like.

Actually, wanting a little more representation is a feminist thing, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you don't let misogynists or radical separatists define feminism.

Make your own sandwich, you know where the kitchen is. If you break a manly nail making a sandwich, then stop using a hammer to make it.

Males have been catered to for a long time, so they are always easily pleased. Females however, that's something that's still taking time due to the outdated concepts there are in marketing and how to attract a female to buy their products.

Definitely, the trailers almost put me off until I saw one trailer, which was supposedly part of the game itself, being shown for Dragon Age, while ME2 was an awkward choice since I wasn't sure about the game at all and I'm still annoyed that they haven't bothered to fix the tiny text in that game.  Horrible trailers, very poorly considered.

No, but the comments you and some other have made are deliberately insulting to women. We don't appreciate that kind behavior around here.

Forgot about some of those Origins trailers.  I bought the game because I had followed it and was pretty confident that they were not the totality of the game.

In any case, Dragon Age Origins' launcher shows a female elf mage, right?  (At least for me, I think it did).  I actually always thought of her as an iconic main character for the game.  I am surprised she wasn't used more.  I like the male Hawke that was featured so far, but focusing on customizability, and letting fans know that you can make a female Hawke would certainly be beneficial.

If they don't want to do cover art, how about a trailer featuring a fem main character or maybe a few poster ads.  Would it break the bank for Bioware to do this?  I don't think so.

Seeing as this thread has tumbled into a black hole I'm ending it here. A few of you are precariously close to a ban. Consider this post your warning.
