Are you seriously complaining about this? The cover warden for the first one wasn't even an option in game or a default character or anything. God I hate feminists.

The point wasn't about being a feminist. The point was that female fans are left in the dust and have to scrounge for information (ie. Romances, Player Choices, etc.) about playing a female PC. Whereas the male portion of BioWare fans are shown trailer, after trailer, and art piece after art piece, on what to expect in terms of romance, character choices, and appearance.

The fact is until Christ Priestly announced that you *can* play as a female character I was very, very worried that I would be stuck as a static male character called "Hawke". All this poster was saying was that it'd be nice for a little equality in terms of information release. Showing nothing about a "female PC" really leaves the female fanbase, and the guys who like playing as females, out in the cold.

Of course, they do research. I'm just saying that about 40%, if not more gamers are female now. And that maybe if those female gamers see that it is possible to play as a female lead character in an rpg game such as DA2, they will pick it up. Just hoping...

And feminists (who btw have nothing to do with the topic) probably hate you, pal.
People just want to know about their customization options...

Wasn't the Jade Empire cover shared between a female and a male character model? I think most female fans would be happy if that happened again.

I asked about something like this for the New Vegas trailers that have been appearing, I asked why they aren't showing the female choice as well and never got a reply. Pretty annoying.

But most men tend to be insecure about their gender, so when there's a female character to play as they panic and think their parts are going to fall off.

Female gamers exist, they aren't a myth, and they play many genres, be it RPG, puzzle, shooter, whatever. Having a gender choice, something which is so rare in gaming when you consider the amount of male characters there are and no choice of gender, like Rockstar's games for example are still very backwards in that regards and are still the same old boring thing to cater to the insecure males.
It's not a case of hating men or any of that silly nonense, it's just an increasing number of female gamers hoping to see a change to the usual, to see gender choices becoming more common place instead of rare, and well written female charactes who aren't just some pleasure toy for a buff, gruff male character.

Times change, the gaming industry as a whole needs to change with them in regards to gaming becoming both a female and male past time, instead of just male.

You can play as a human male or human female character in Dragon Age 2.

Will you only see the human male in the marketing? I am not sure (we have many months to go yet) but I would guess that, yes, we will mostly use the male character for marketing. Why? Well, there are a lot of marketing reasons for this.

It is important to lock a recognizeable image into the mind of consumers. This is why companys create logos and create brand recognition. You see the goldern arches, you know it is McDonalds. The instant recognition that the image represents the product is very important. Changing the image causes confusion in the mind of advertisers, retailers and potential customers.

Another reason is that males are still the largest target audience for our type of video game. It is also proven data that males predominantly play or associate with a male character first. Hence, the male image. This does not mean that female gamers or male gamers who prefer to play female characters are less important, but they are a smaller consumer group. All marketing is always about attracting the largest group available.

There are a bunch of reasons why we do this in marketing and I know that it annoys some of our fans and I am sorry for this, but it likely won't change. I am confidant that our fans, being imo smarter than the average gamers, realize this and begrudgingly accept this. Evey game I do push to release female character images, screens, videos etc as BioWare does greatly value our "female PC first" audience and I plan to keep doing this for DA2.

Horsecrap.

This is exactly the same as with Mass Effect. You're going to be throwing this "iconic Hawke" down everybody's throats and it's going to cause more confusion than anything else. Hell, I've already seen a topic thinking Hawke is a male character only.

You really need to advertise the game for what it is. You need to make it known that we can play a female or custom character in more ways than merely responding to questions on the forums.

And the whole "icon" argument is lame, as an "icon" should be recognizable for the whole series. Hawke was not in Dragon Age Origins, so is not a proper Dragon Age icon. The blood dragon is far more iconic.

This is just lazy.

As the female market share in the gaming market rises, there will inevitably be more female representation in marketing. I have every confidence because this isn't a matter of social policy, but rather, a matter of financial sense.

Ok, so why not just use both versions of the default PC?  You guys did it for JE, why not ME, and DA? If anything, doing so would interest an even larger portion of consumers . . .

I bought it on Steam, so I should get a pass on that one.  Yeah...Image IPB

But on topic, I'm glad that most people reading this understand where I'm coming from.  I don't want to abolish all traces of Beard Hawke from recorded history, and I have no problem with people who prefer to play as male characters.  I just enjoy being a fanatic fan, who eagerly awaits every scrap of news about the games I'm looking forward to.  It makes it even more enjoyable when I am getting information that is pertinent to my gaming experience, such as customization options, voice, and love interests for female player characters.

Really? I like playing as both male and female characters. For a male I make a character I'd like to be, and for a female I make the character I'd like to date. Both end up being awesome, but the males tend to be more magey and intellectual, and the females tend to be smart and feisty.

When I learned that Saint's Row 2, the one and only GTA like game to ever have a gender choice, had the choice of a female character, I was overjoyed. For the first time ever I would finally get to really have a say on my character in a sandbox game inspired from the, frankly lazy, boring and old fashioned, GTA games and that excited me.

When I got to play the game I had a blast with it, finally I could play as a female character I got to create, I could go crazy with the game's wepaons, I could finally do something that no GTA game and no other sand box game, beyond the sandbox RPG's of Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, have ever allowed me to do - to play as a female character and just have a say in the fun and character.

Same with Fable 2, after Fable 1's disappointing male only thing, I was happy to finally have the choice of a female hero instead of the usual generic male.
I've been gaming since 1984 and the majority of that gaming has been with male characters being forced with little to no choice for a female character, Lara Croft is meaningless since she was clearly designed to get male's attention and was a shallow character.

Having the choice to play as a female character I can create and come to care about makes gaming less of a chore, like it is with a male character I care nothing for, and makes the gaming so much more fun.

And when I game, I want to be having fun, not feeling disconnected because I don't feel any kind of connection with the character I'm playing as.
I feel more connected to a female character I've created, than to a male I had no say in.

As for the Jade Empire comments, I thought Jade Empire was really good, way too short, but really good.  Would love to see a sequel to that, one which is a much longer game than the first one.
Loved the whole Asian/Eastern World charm, it was beautiful.

If your gonna blame low sales Chris on the cover, maybe it was because of it being a highly specialised game?

I actually bought JE "Because" of the cover lol (once I saw it was a Bio game)

Yeah it was a bit of a bomb.  A planned sequel and expansion were cancelled IIRC.  Pity to.

Has long as the actually make it playable for females, I don't care. But they really should stop thinking that advertising a female would make them lose male players....seriously, it could have the opposite effect. This is the 21st century right?

Thanks for actually responding to my concerns or thinking about what I said. There are countless people who had no idea you could play a female Shepard in Mass Effect, and that was a direct result of your advertising.

What else are we to think? The female player option obviously comes second. And expecting an actual, legitimate reason for this kind of behavior is clearly too much to ask for.

But, no, all you do is sweep crap like this under the rug and repeat a few buzzwords that don't make any sense. This post of yours is a prime example. You ignore me and try to make my comments sound unfair or "off the wall" or something. My complaints are legitimate.

If you want an icon then use something that's been present for the entire series. If you want to avoid confusion then advertise what your game actually features. If you want to be lazy, focus on one generic white dude with beard stubble for advertising and pretend custom characters don't exist unless specifically asked on the forums.

Wow, you people are hostile. Males are the target audience. If you want to change that you'll have to start convincing more girls to care about deep, detailed fantasy video games... I know a few, but the majority HATE video games period, not to mention long rpgs.
