If they have the data to back it up, they should think whatever their market research suggests.  Time period has nothing to do with it.  However, I am confident that marketing female characters will increase in the future, since I think females are making up a bigger portion of the market.

Horsecrap... blah blah blah... This is just lazy.

And here is why so many Devs don't tell the truth on forums.

Thanks for actually responding to my concerns or thinking about what I said. There are countless people who had no idea you could play a female Shepard in Mass Effect, and that was a direct result of your advertising.

What else are we to think? The female player option obviously comes second. And expecting an actual, legitimate reason for this kind of behavior is clearly too much to ask for.

But, no, all you do is sweep crap like this under the rug and repeat a few buzzwords that don't make any sense. This post of yours is a prime example. You ignore me and try to make my comments sound unfair or "off the wall" or something. My complaints are legitimate.

If you want an icon then use something that's been present for the entire series. If you want to avoid confusion then advertise what your game actually features. If you want to be lazy, focus on one generic white dude with beard stubble for advertising and pretend custom characters don't exist unless specifically asked on the forums.

You can see female Shepard at the back of the case Mys....

Yeah, but that's not because of marketing alone. Bw says they like to rely on word of mouth, right?

Wow, you people are hostile. Males are the target audience. If you want to change that you'll have to start convincing more girls to care about deep, detailed fantasy video games... I know a few, but the majority HATE video games period, not to mention long rpgs.

Guys won't buy a game because a female is on the cover? I don't think it's anything to get pissed over, but it is not sensible thinking.

Maybe if the game industry would target females as their audiance too then more females would be convinced to play?

Strange.  I was just talking to a feminist the other day and all she could talk about was how she loved this dude on the internet whose handle was Guns.  Way to break her heart you monster.

Personally, I would not mind buying a game with a female on the cover.  I don't think it is even that uncommon to have females on the covers of fantasy games (Dungeon Siege is an example of the top of my head).  My only problem is when the images are sleazy - Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines had a scantily clad undead schoolgirl on the cover, which specifically caused me not to buy the game.

When this topic is discussed it is usually about the race of the hero, so it is interesting to see it brought up about the gender of a hero. I take it as a positive sign when female gamers want their likeness and interest better represented in video game marketing. For the non-white male gamer it can be frustrating to rarely see a hero that looks like you in marketing materials. I don't think the OP is a feminist, I think she just wants more effort made to market games with characteristics that she can better identify with. Of course the only way to truly settle this is if Bioware chooses to feature a multi-racial, transgendered, bi-sexual, multi-faith, center of the road independent hero. :P

My point exactly hun, and its well know that most male gamers play 'AS' female characters lol....especially if you can romance a female character too....

Aslo, as far as 'fantasy' goes, anyone know the rough percentage between male and female fantasy pictures and art? I do lol, and the excuse it stops a game from selling is rubbish.

Well, at first Chris says he doesn't want to insult our intelligence, and hopes the gamers who prefer playing female, can just accept the fact that a generic male will be used in marketing only. For a recognizable iconic image. Ok, I can understand that, even if I don't like it. However, he goes on to imply that JE sales failed because of using a female in the marketing?

So he's going to insult our intelligence anyway. I love it >_>

Marketing research is what is the source of these decisions not some sort of judgement on gender and our preferences.  Bioware will do what sells best and I cannot blame them for that.

I will judge them on the quality of their games not their marketing which is good because sometimes the marketing gets a little creepy.

I didn't know I could play as FemShepard in Mass Effect until one of friends told me.

And yes, playing as female character is a deal breaker for me.

So I would love to see a female PC on DA2 artwork or cover!

Videogames are a medium where you get to control a character so you have to relate to said character, specially in a role playing game.
That said, males usually relate to males it's not so hard to understand.
I myself am a young male, I am not against female main characters but of course I don't relate the same to a man than a woman, and since male customers are the target audience, it's only logical.

Ok, so why not just use both versions of the default PC?  You guys did it for JE, why not ME, and DA?. . .

Now ask me how sales of Jade Empire went.

So your saying that Jade Empire's lack of sucess if purely down to the fact you had a girl on the cover?

He respected your intelligence enough to think you could take a joke.  Obviously he was wrong.

He was making fun of the choice of Jade Empire as a positive example since the sales went poorly.

You can be a female character in-game. Stop complaining about who's in the cover art/advertisement. Some of you complain about the most trivial stuff.

You mean that one little screenshot with Wrex where she's wearing the full helmet because BioWare hadn't finished making female heads and hairstyles yet?

There's no way to know that's a femShep unless you followed the game on the forums or have already played the game. And the tagline on the box only says "customize your character". Doesn't mention gender at all.

The only recognition femShep ever got was like 4 screenshots from Mass Effect 2 after ME2 was already released, and even then they were just thrown into the gallery out of the blue.
