a shame because i prefer when covers don't display the games/books/movies characters. I also prefer when marketing shows the diversity of the characters that can be created instead of showing only one, making it look like that one (which i dislike) is the only one playableValmy wrote...
Look it has nothing to do with women not being valued as customers or anything like that. Market research simply suggests having an iconic character is better and it is better if said iconic character is male. Bioware wants to sell games so they go with that research.

Your wrong, you do realise there are MORE female MMO players now than MALE?
Call me all the names under the sun if you like lovey, water of a ducks back sweetheart, but if you feel like arguing factual STATISTICS with the game companies who RELEASE those statistics...then...
well...go ahead while we all laugh at you

>>That pic is on the main Dragon Age 2 page. Granted it is not the "cover" art but it is a girl with the same claw arem and stuff as the beard guy. So they are already worlds ahead of Mass Effect 2.<<
This actually brings up a good point ... what if, and this is only a "what if", the character in the background is another potential version of your character - if it takes the Evil Path and sides with the Dark Spawn? (or maybe not even the "evil path", since the ending of Awakening could have set the stage for an "evil light" version of the Dark Spawn terror ... you might have the option, then, of leading an army of darkspawn against those waging the new blight)

Indeed. And it appears other companies aren't as afraid about scaring their male customers off with image of female on the cover:rynluna wrote...
I never understood why Bioware couldn't market on the concept of "creating your own adventure with your own character". I know many people that do not realize you can play as a female character in ME. It would be nice to see boxart featuring both a Male and Female in DA and ME. Maybe something like this:

Guys if you have a girl (shephard) and a guy (shephard) in the same exact picture... People WILL get confused. They will play the game, and say, "hey where is the girl along with my guy on the main cover?" or "hey where is the guy along with my girl on the main cover?" Yes, that is exactly what will happen to people who just casually play video games.
Yeah.....because we are five years old.....

^ this. The picture posted above, created by one Louvette, is gorgeous. The vibe's it's giving me, though, is that you play with 2 protagonists, the male and the female.night0205 wrote...

You can't really market it any other than is being done now. You NEED a key figure. A face for the game.

Bioware should have featured the female pc prominently in Mass Effect advertising because, while the male voice actor was just fine, Jennifer Hale is absolutly brilliant. You shouldn't squander one of the best performances in videogames ever like that.
Yeah, even Jen Hale believes Femshep deserves more recognition.
The 4:44 mark is where she urges the fans to ask for more Femshep.

As much as I'd like to see the female protagonist on the cover (or both possible protagonists), your post isn't really isn't helping.
If you're going to respond like that, then it would probably be better if BioWare just ignores fan feedback entirely.
My post isn't helping? I'm giving him valid criticism. And he's ignoring me already.
He likely won't respond to my thoughts at all because his 3 prepackaged lines of "having an icon", "avoiding confusion", and "lulz, males are teh moar numerous" have ben called into question and he doesn't have anymore prepackaged lines with which to counter these questions.
His reply here is virtually identical to his reply back in ME1 days. Except now half of his "points" don't make any sense, as I already pointed out.
No wonder he's ignoring you already.

again, this isn't only about the cover, but ... what about this cover from a very obscure company called Bioware:night0205 wrote...

loosk great, has something iconic, and doesn't rely on a default male character

Even though they get option to select the gender of their character as one of very first things in the game, and they get to see the visual effect of flipping that switch?night0205 wrote...

You don't have any actual data to back up that claim, do you?

She is passionate about what she is saying. Sometimes you have to word it that way to make a statement. "Oh no she said a mean word."

Is it really that hard to put on the box, "Choose your own adventure. Play as male or female."???

I understand Mystranna's frustration very well, because I remember these same discussions from the ME1 forums years ago, and the answers seem to always be the same. The truth is, as soon as the DA2 website and this forum were launched, my immediate thought was: "oh no, a predetermined male protagonist", even though I've played every Bioware game (except Sonic) since NWN, and they've never, ever done that. I can only imagine what a gamer who doesn't follow BioWare's forums thinks. Yes, these are the early stages, but at the same time, Chris already gave us his views on this as a marketing professional.
I understand why they use Sheploo as the face of the marketing for the ME franchise. The bearded man for DA2 makes much less sense to me, at least at this point. I have a hard time believing that using a female PC as a marketing face alongside a male PC would alienate male gamers, considering many male gamers also like to play with female avatars. In any case, it would most definitely grab the attention of female gamers, both old fans and new ones.
I firmly hope and believe that advertising for games can and will change in the future. I wish BioWare could be the spearhead, but I suppose only time will tell.

This is about every piece of advertising BioWare will ever release for this game. The response here is identical to the response of ME1's Sheploo. This means that every official video, every official screenshot, and every piece of artwork will have iconic dudeHawke on it. We might see concept art of a female character, but otherwise a female Hawke won't exist until third parties get their hands on the character creator. I remember female Shepard didn't get shown AT ALL until one month before ME1's release, and that was only because IGN got its hands on the character creator.
And BioWare thinks this is the way to avoid confusion. XD
There are so many people that think or thought Sheploo was the only Shepard because BioWare didn't advertise what their game actually featured. Honestly, if we see a female Hawke at all from BioWare I will be truly shocked.
Which is why I'm complaining. This is garbage, and the points Chris made do not make sense anymore. I held my tongue (a little) before ME1 was released. I fell for their scheme, thinking an icon might be helpful. But it makes no sense with DA2, as Hawke is not tied to the series at all. Hawke is not an icon for Dragon Age.

Apparently it will ruin the iconic image they are going for.

How I start the post is irrelevant. The post was not JUST me saying "horsecrap".
Use your head Ecael; my post had much more to it.

There is nothing special about choosing male or female. You could put it on the back, but there are dozens of rpg's that allow you to play as a female or a male.

Actually make it feel like your playing a female in a game? I agree
