Marketing DA2: Is featuring a female player character really impossible?

I would like to see the box without Hawke on it, male or female. I do like the dragon with the 16 figures outlined in the wings. And a vague image in a hood with out making out the features would satisfy my non gender specific desire.
Dragon age was a good cover. Neverwinter Nights was a good cover. KOTOR was a GREAT cover and ME was not a good cover.
I know people who did not immediately purchase ME because they did not realize they could play as a woman.
If I'm selling something I want as many people as possible to see it and pick it up. Not just people who already know BioWare has both male and female character possibilities.

Knights of the Old Republic has Bastila on the cover. That works, but it sounds like Dragon Age 2 will have a lot of females and males on the cover... all those people behind Hawke.
And your point is? ME had Ash and Garrus and ME2 had Miri and Thane.

Indeed. And it appears other companies aren't as afraid about scaring their male customers off with image of female on the cover:rynluna wrote...
I never understood why Bioware couldn't market on the concept of "creating your own adventure with your own character". I know many people that do not realize you can play as a female character in ME. It would be nice to see boxart featuring both a Male and Female in DA and ME. Maybe something like this:
Created by Louvette.
Brilliant! See.. Those are totally bum kicking and appeals to both!

Starting a post with "Horsecrap!" is valid criticism?
No wonder he's ignoring you already.
How I start the post is irrelevant. The post was not JUST me saying "horsecrap".
Perhaps he stopped reading it after that.
Use your head Ecael; my post had much more to it.
No it didn't, it was rawr rawr.

Well looking at all the complaining in this thread it seems that Women won't buy this became because a man is on the cover.
Who said that? Didn't read that anywhere...just heard suggestions.
You wanted Proof?! Heres your proof!

Ok, its from after I posted my first point, but I couldn't be bothered to trawl through the earlier posts.

You don't know women at all, do you? Actually most of us are very picky when it comes to videogames. We don't look at the cover and see a hot guy or chick and instantly buy it.night0205 wrote...
Did you guys know, that many women buy games because there is a sexy strong man on the cover? Ever think of that?

If he stopped reading after the first word then he should not be the community coordinator. Does he have such a delicate sensibility that one person accusing his prepackaged, trite, excuses of being horsecrap makes him so angry that he can't read on? And I'm pretty sure he did read the rest, as he felt the need to insult me by writing "blah blah blah" as a summation of my post.
And, yes, my post did have a lot more to it than saying "Horsecrap", though his post was horsecrap. All my points were valid, yet they were ignored, and on top of that he insulted me in the process.
His response to the OP made no sense and I provided the reasons why.
Use your head. Despite the tone of my post it was still providing valid criticism. I'm sick of their attitude and I'm not afraid to make that known.

If most gamers in general had any taste they would just see the Bioware logo on the cover and instantly buy it.

VERY picky indeed. I have been an RPG fan for years.. My stack of games are not towering in some corner.. As a female. I buy a game based on story content (for the most part)
Don't get me wrong. I love my character builds, the battles, and stradagy. Story always comes first though.. Cover art is a passing thought at best.

Looking at that picture I would believe the two to be partners. meele tank guy, mage chick friend (and possible future love interest.) I'd also wonder if she was Angelita Jo'lie.

^ this. The picture posted above, created by one Louvette, is gorgeous. The vibe's it's giving me, though, is that you play with 2 protagonists, the male and the female.night0205 wrote...
Guys if you have a girl (shephard) and a guy (shephard) in the same exact picture... People WILL get confused. They will play the game, and say, "hey where is the girl along with my guy on the main cover?" or "hey where is the guy along with my girl on the main cover?" Yes, that is exactly what will happen to people who just casually play video games.
You can't really market it any other than is being done now. You NEED a key figure. A face for the game.
And I disagree. You don't need a key figure for the game cover. You need a good image. Does not have to be a picture of the main character. Does not have to show gender. KOTOR was a great cover. It had the "villain" and a companion.
I also disagree that having the male and female options on the cover would confuse people. Jade Empire had both on one of the covers. On another they just had Death's Hand. Actually looking at this one, if they offered the games with different covers that would be something I'd buy. Probably more than one.
But back to the subject. By only focusing on the male character they may be losing sales and that's just a sad thing.

Now ask me how sales of Jade Empire went.
Chris, none of us is qualified (or at least very few of us - certainly not me) to market a video game, particularly a BioWare AAA title. I want to acknowledge that right away.
At the same time, there are some prominent counter-examples to JE. Fable II was a massive sales hit - and its advertising campaign featured its customization at every turn, including the ability to play as a female character. RE5, as tmp points out, features both Chris and Sheva (the PCs) prominently - it's the best-selling Resident Evil game ever.

This is about every piece of advertising BioWare will ever release for this game. The response here is identical to the response of ME1's Sheploo. This means that every official video, every official screenshot, and every piece of artwork will have iconic dudeHawke on it.
Yep. As Mystranna says, this isn't just about the cover art. We've seen this pattern play out before with Mass Effect. I know we don't have access to the data you all at BioWare do, but I have to think you're hurting yourselves by not making it more clear that players have choices about their protagonist. It's a huge plus for BioWare games, and an edge over a lot of the competition. Why not make it a more prominent selling point?

Does it matter? You will buy it anyway.
The thing is, We know they will have male and female characters. Someone who doesn't know BioWare as a company won't know and the male only cover sure won't give them any hint.

I loved the Jade Empire cover, it was beautiful and gave the Asian/Eastern feeling when looking at it, same with the KOTOR covers, they were very nice. And Dragon Age's red dragon on a white background was very striking, much nicer than the one shown for DA2.
