I'm hoping the human thing is important to the plot. Otherwise it would seem like a strange thing to do (why couldn't Hawke be a dwarf or elf if his/her race isn't important?)

spoiler alert: it probably is.. or they wouldn't make it that way. maybe. i think

This makes me very sad. I hardly ever played humans in origins, and found the dwarves/elves to be much more interesting.

I hope this isn't a trend. X__X I don't want to be a human in every game! But I seriously doubt they'd ever have a predefined DWARF character. I can dream!

But the very purpose of Dragon Age was to make your protagonist and put him/her in the path of adventure..like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. What a huge letdown Bioware!

Yup. I think that's what everyone's complaining about. Bioware setup everyone's continuity expectations with the work they did on Baldur's Gate & Neverwinter Nights. They promised your choices matter in Mass Effect and Dragon Age but the impact is underwhelming compared to their previous titles. I wonder if all the comments about meeting your companions again and "nobody thinks the Warden's tale is done" was the setup for Awakening. Maybe Bioware had more ideas then they could implement before work on DA:2 began. I can't imagine the sales numbers for expansion packs hold up to the potential of a full fledged sequel.

I suppose we could hope that familiar faces will return in DA:2 or DA:3 but I'm not holding my breath after they let a "dead" Warden character get imported into The Awakening. If they wanted to be annoying about choices, they could have returning characters who were in love with the Warden from Origins not fall for the new guy in DA:2 because their still pining for the first Warden. Choices matter indeed!

Sounds like a waste of time to me!

Haven´t read the whole thread, but what a stupid decision by Bioware..,If you want to make a movie just do it, don´t ruin your games...Always appealling to the lowest common denominator...

Now I feel the some about DA2 and the Mass Effect series, may be worth buying it but certanly not at full price, I won´t pay $50/60 for this, $20/30 tops...

What it sounds like to me is that they are going to use or borrow heavy from the M2 engine...

I hope that we can still do mods...

This isn't even going to be a fantasy RPG anymore.

Well, it will be fantasy. Can't get around that when you have mages, elves and dwarves. Doesn't sound like an RPG, though.

Although I don't like being forced into playing a certain way if there is a good reason such as being Morrigan's child then I can live with it. If this is the case though what they should have done is made you half-elf, half-dwarf or human based on what you did in DA:O. That would make a lot more sense. I really hope the decisions we made in the original will be reflected in the sequal and not have them assume certain events happened. If my choices don't carry over than what's the point?

Lets not jump the shark guys. Maybe there is a silver lining to this news?

Anyways, the gaming community is so pessimistic on any future release.

It makes me wonder why the movie community is the opposite?

We need to find the balance between the two.

I wasn't pessimistic until I bought Awakening and they brought out Darkspawn Chronicles. I'd been very disapponted with some of the aspects of the DLC, but I wasn't pessimistic. I defended Awakening from the naysayers, even though it wasn't a story I wanted to play, and didn't feature any of the characters I wanted around.

Then I played it, and saw the direction they were moving with dialogue and character interactions. The plot continually limited my choices. The ending was.... well we all know what it was. No need to belabor that. And Darkspawn Chronicles was the exact opposite of something I would even consider spending money on.

In any case, my pessimism isn't based on nothing, it's based on the fact that they're dumping everything I enjoyed about Origins as fast as they can. Pessimism is the natural result of repeated disappointment.

But...but......but.......everyone knows elves make the best mages, and Dwarves the best warriors.

Also, the origins aspect is what made me play through the game several times. Knowing the first 1/4 of the game was fresh and new, and you see things from a different aspect - it was genuinly interesting.

I won't be making any irrational assumptions about what's ruining what until I see more then a few lines of a Press Release.

We are a named character which seems more like a good thing to me. I believe even other Studios should be adopting the Voiced PC idea. It's also far more immersive when NPCs refer to you with something other then salutations/Rank like, Warden. I also know I wasn't the only one that had to "Get used to" not have a character voice again for DAO. It was a step backwards.

Not being able to choose a Race was, more then likely, a very hard call for the designers. I think they would have done it for the right reasons, lets give them some credit and assume they know what they are doing. They have earned that I think.

My main concern at this point is just that the team is really going for a more Next Gen experience this time. DAO bridged people nicely, a good go-between from the old Baldur's Gate style to what should come next with better visuals and more focused gameplay where story is more key then stat checking and pretty decal customisations.

okay guys, let's cool jets for a second here. yes this is a disappointment, BUT i am certain some good will come of it. Bioware is not some evil monolithic juggernaut that gets its kicks out of annoying fans. Also, just cause this particular game has to do with a new, presumably pre-defined character does not mean we will never see our warden again. Think how cool it would be to have a break from the warden for a whole adventure, and then return to the warden in DA3 which will tie together the events of both games in some epic conclusion.

So let's just see what bioware does with the material they CREATED!!!!! it is their intellectual property after all, and they have the right to do with it as they please. If you want an RPG that is absolutely perfect for you, go and learn how to develop video games and make it yourself hahaha. so let's just wait till more info is released. i am sure by the end of it all we will be pleasantly surprised by the result.

Not being able to choose a race is the big killer for me. I don't want a movie where i'm also required to push buttons. I want a game with content, places to explore, my character to develop...not something already predefined.

That's the big joy of fantasy RPGs..starting back in pen&paper days with D&D.

Ugh. The Shepherd system is... acceptable. To an extent.

As long as they continue to support Origins (remember that 2 year DLC plan? :D) and give us at least one expansion/DLC each that lets us play as an Elf and a Dwarf, I'll be happy.

However, this 10-year storyline has potential. I love the Dragon Age world, and I'll give this admittedly rushed sequel a chance (I mean, Origins took, what? 5 years? And this one's getting done in 2?), but I can't help but feel that this is a step backwards. Dragon Age really was a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, one of the best games in the history of the world, but what's this one? A spiritual successor to Mass Effect?

I dunno, at this point I'm really conflicted.

You know, for some reason, this doesn't really disappoint me.

As much as I loved DA:O's elves and dwarves, and the rich backgrounds that came with them... I always felt like they didn't fit the story as well as the human characters. Though I know that people who did their first play-through as an elf or dwarf would likely disagree with me on that

City-Elf was the best character for Dragon Age. Hands down it beats the pants off all others.

All I'm saying is, "we can not judge a product till its finished."  It just seems that there is a bunch of unneccessary grief.

I am not saying we should open this news with welcoming arms, but it is not the end of the world either.  I just think some people on the forums are having a bit of tissy fit.  Wasting so much energy on a game.

I guess, after watching the three Star Wars prequels, Bay's interpretation of the Transformer's franchise, et cetera, I try not to have expectations good or bad.  I just do not want to have another one of those "f--- you" moments.

That's just irritating.  But this is what happens when you focus on getting a game out fast cool features get cut.  I hope the rest of the game is impressive

I can accept the human Hawke, but I want play like a mage, I dont want to be the warrior of every other game, I'm sad because the differents reactions, actions that the NPC had with the different races was one of the best thing from DAO

I want see and play DA2 but I dont know what expect

i hope they take into account how many of us are upset over this. The one thing i truly liked about origins was to pick every detail down to my race and whether i was mage or rouge or warrior. I can't believe they are doing what they did to mass effect all over again. Did they not notice how badly their sales went down for ME2

I may be in the minority here, but I'm very pleased by the developers' decision to define the PC within stricter parameters. The obvious benefit is that it will allow them to craft a more focused, character-based story around the PC this time, which is preferable, IMO, to epic, save the world tales (though I'm sure those elements will still be present in DA2). In Origins, the story was more or less centered on stopping the blight, and as such allowed for a diverse array of PCs to stop it. While origins played a role in the plot of DA, they seemed more or less to be an aesthetic choice; things played out more or less the same regardless of race and origin.

Consequently, I thought the PC was by far the most boring, uninteresting character in Origins. He/she was more or less a vacuous vessel around which the story was told, rather than an integral part of the story in his or her own right. You could choose to conduct yourself in a certain manner I suppose, but it just didn't feel very substantive.

Again, I may be in the minority, but I don't care as much about becoming the "revered hero of the land" as I do about specific, tailored story-telling centered on a fleshed out, compelling PC. Choose your own adventure mechanics in games are all well and good, but I'd sacrifice them for a highly honed and developed character story any day.

its kind of a disappointment but bioware has never let me down before.
