The real kicker will come when it is revealed that DA is set in ancient Earth when Shepard arrives in his Reaper time machine.

Hahaaha! And that Shepherd turns out to be none other than Hawke's father! After much begetting, Hawke's descendents eventually lead to... John Connor!

While there are multiple races in the game, like elves, dwarves, etc, in Dragon Age 2 you play a human character.

ouch.....so much for choosing who we play...a bit limited...at least we can choose how we play

Yeah unless it turns out to be a linear forced feast.

I say yes to voiced characters (including an advanced voice tool to custom your own with mic) and I say yes to choos other races than humans. But that gotta be ALOT of work.

Man, and my expectations for this game were so high. :(

Restricted to just one race. I can't see how that would not mean greatly reduced replay value, when compared to DA:O. The various origin stories, and being able to play the game from the perspectives of different characters from different races and backrounds, was just about the best thing about DA:O.

I SINCERELY hope that this restriction is compensated for by radicaly increases in customization on other levels - appearance, class, fighting styles, magic, etc.

I'm not willing to give up all hope for DA2, as it is Bioware we're talking about, but suddenly I'm a lot less optimistic. I can say that I won't be buying the game until reviews have convinced me that it's not an overtly linear RPG-lite. If it turns out to be that, I won't be buying it at all.

I'm hoping that future revelations about the game are not this disappointing.

I bet this restriction means that we'll have a fully voiced character, and that the demands for such a thing were a major factor behind the choise to restrict us to one race. I wish such a concept as fully voiced central character had never been invented.

Oh, so everything that was established in DAO is now pointless?
And Bioware has decided to take one step forward and three steps back?

DA:O is far from pointless, as you'll learn when you play DA2.

I've talked with Design quite a bit about Hawke, the DA2 lead character. There were a lot of directions that they could have gone, but ultimately, I think they made the right choice to tell the best story in this installment. Between now and launch, you'll learn more about Hawke and the story, which will shed a little more light on why Hawke was the hero that the world (i.e. this story) needed.

I'm glad to hear it won't be pointless, but going back to BG2/KOTOR2 style sequels that are not aware of your personal decisions would seem like a colossal step back after what we've seen in ME2 etc. I'm assuming that's the approach, just to not be disappointed by hoping for my DAO decisions to have an actual effect.

I don't think voiceovers are the only reason for humans only DA2. But I would prefer dwarves before voiceovers anyway. I think DAO works great with a mute grey warden.

Yea... VO is more suitable to ME where there are less dialog options (compared to DA:O)...

Personally I am a fan of this decision. I only completed full playthroughs with human characters in the first game anyways (I only dabbled with elf and dwarf for a short time).

Hopefully this means the main character will have VO lines in DA2 just like Shepard does in ME.

After having played ME, ME2, and AP. Dragon Age's conversations just didn't feel quite as engaging.

A fantasy setting without a choice of race is a real killer. Like video games are regressing instead of making more progress. Now they are more concerned about making it a movie instead of a game.

Bioware probably made you a single human character so they could improve on the story and options that you make in the game. For me that is what I really like about the games that Bioware makes.

make no mistake, this is the worst design decision bioware has ever made in their history of game making. they are taking every single thing that made dragons age great - and gutting it.

'gasp' they are turning into 4kids!

I'm not so dissapointed for the fact that we can only be a human, since all my Wardens are humans. But I'm sad about other players that played as elf/dwarf...

And I can't say that having only one race is no RPG, since Mass Effect is a great game as well and you can only be a human, but still... You can chose your race in DAO, why the sudden change in DA2? Doesn't make sense. BioWare damn well better have a good excuse for saying that we can't be other race.

-So this Hawke character comes from Lothering but your stuck playing only as a human? It seems messed up that we are stuck playing a single race for the next game. Especially a fantasy RPG. It is still a RPG isn’t it? That’s what made DAO great in the first place was he replay value by choosing another race. So much for replay value…

-Wasn’t Lothering full of refugees fleeing the Darkspawn? Wouldn’t it be fair to say that at least a few elves and dwarves were present when the Darkspawn attacked. I recall seeing a few elves and rescuing two dwarves.

-So how hard is it to use an elf or surface dwarf for this role as well? What makes a human so uniquely required to play DA2? Do we need to gab items on the top shelves? Is there a minimum height requirement to leave Ferelden? I suppose there is more to it than that like maybe Hawke has family or something but I cant imagine it would be difficult to substitute them for the proper race since its already done in DAO with your guest appearance at the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest. Is it because Hawke is voiced now and BioWare just doesn’t thing that anyone would like to see them use the same two voices for the elf and dwarf version?

-Guess we’ll see what the reasons are regardless if we like it or not. Wonder if the game will last over 40 hours now since the hero its voiced now… The more I hear about this sequel and yes that’s not a lot but whats been said is still rather big on its own, the less I like it.

This way it's easier to just reskin ME2 and shove it out the door. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't any dwarves in it at all so they could save money on not having to hack in models for them.

Hear hear!

I would rather have a good RPG with multiple races and origins 2-3 years later than a "decent" one rushed out on EA-s demand with a voiceover in a year with none of the above.

Yea, my faith in BioWare since Mass Effect 2 and all its downloads, Dragon Age Origins and their last few downloads, Awakenings and the KOTOR mmorpg (or whatever its is) instead/over making KOTOR 3 is completely gone now.
