While there are multiple races in the game, like elves, dwarves, etc, in Dragon Age 2 you play a human character.

And here comes the first disappointment! For some reason I think this isn't the last.

I must reiterate the disappointment that this announcement has caused. If this is trying to appeal to a wider audience, it is very ignorant and disrespectful to the fans of the original who loved the origin stories and the multiple race options.

I guess this was kind of bound to happen, concidering the PC will probably get full voice over this time around.

Bummer.

In either case it is a bunch of bs. DA 2 is huge step backwards. Instead of giving the fans what they would truly get the most enjoyment out of, they instead get the finger. Thanks EA.

This is very disappointing, taking away the chance to experience the story from the viewpoint of different races. If it isn't too much trouble could I be informed of the reasoning behind the choice to remove the origin stories.

I would take it as confirmation that you do in fact get to play as Morrigans child, I always suspected this but I always wondered how they would implement dawrves and elves as PCs since Morrigan is human and any charcter would have to be either half dwarf, half elf or full human. The fact that you can only play as human confirms that you are Morrigans child.

I hesitate to take it as a full confirmation but I absolutely hope you are right. At any rate the chances of our PC being Morrigan's child just blasted through the roof and that just made my day.

I don't want to put Bioware down. I love your games, but Origins gave me a feel of who I was with my characters as far as elves and Dwarves. I got to be something very unique with these beings. Taking them aways is like cutting off the right arm of the series. I'm sorry I don't support that idea at all. I'm not buying this game. I'll stick with Mass effect from now on. I really enjoyed the other races a lot. Heck my first character was a dwarf. My second was a elf. My newsest character was finally a human. I was hoping you would add another race. I'm very upset. All well, maybe you'll add the races back for a third installment. I'll wait till then, but like I said before. I'm not buying this game. I love your games, but when I feel you have taken something which was good away from that was great. It just doesn't feel right. This is truly upsetting. I'll say this though I'm willing to wait till 2013 or longer for DA 2 if you would add the other two races back, but if your not.

Couldn't agree more, I feel that the developers have made a major error here.

Also I want to voice out how much I hope it isn't Morrigans child as so many are hoping for. Not everyone went down that road you know. Maybe I will change my mind when it comes out and "if" it happens, but right now I'm too bitter. Man I've never been this disappointed with an announcement before :/

QFT. Mass Effect is enough. I want Dragon Age 2, not some love child of Mass Effect and Tolkien that you just have decided to call Dragon Age 2. I thought Dragon Age was a return to your roots? Now you take out all choice of who your character can be? Not to sound like a whiner, but with a predetermined name, and the inability to be anything but human, it sounds like this is going more in the direction of Mass Effect, not a return to your 'roots.'

And let me guess.. you get a set surname as well. So people can address you in the voiced dialogues.

Ok, I was right.

It's "Hawke". Nothing against that surname, but the idea that Bioware has to feed us with a set surname to "enhance" their story-telling film/game hybrids gives me nausea.

Hawke on a mission to save the world, again! :wizard:

But the whole Morrigan's child thing is dumb.  What about those of us that did not sleep with her?   I like when games give you choices to make.  I don't like when they come out with a new game and say "Your choice was wrong this is what happend!"

I don't see it as an issue. Dragon Age Origins had that name because its focus was on Origins. It was it's 'new feature'.

You might notice this one is not called Dragon Age: Origins 2. Just Dragon Age. In fact, on the hotsite there is a 'Rise to Power' that seems to stick out of some sentences. Might as well be this game's 'surname', which ties in to what seems to be this game's 'new feature': building your own empire from scratch.

It's not a step backwards. It's a different story with a different gameplay to fit in.

I myself felt most comfortable when playing as my Elven Wardens, since I thought the City Elf origin imparticular was spectacular. To be told we can't choose our PC's race is extremely dissapointing,to say the least.

Morrigan is smart, young and powerful as hell at the end of DAO regardless. I wouldn't think she'd just give up on having a child with the soul of an old god. I'm sure she'd find a way.....discover the location of another old god and another ritual. This is far from unexplainable.

Hopefully that will be the biggest disappointment, but yeah, I do feel they're effing up the idea of Dragon Age they presented in the first game and this is coming from a guy who usually plays humans or well Tieflings if I can ;)

I know it isnt confirmed until a dev actually confirms it but just that statement has made me 99.999% sure that this will be the case.

Agreed, I enjoyed being able to be another race and having dialogue throughout the game associated with my species. It also offers different game play experiences. I may not like it, but I can live with it; I didn't mind it in Mass Effect, but that's a different game.

This.
I was fond of my Dalish elf and other various characters but their story's are done.  C'est fini.  If you want the same old thing then play the same old game.
The point of a trying a new "flavour" seems to be eluding a lot of people here.

Well, that sucks. I understand why you guys did it, but it still kind of sucks.
I demand that you make everything else about the game twice as awesome to make up for it.

But a good sequel takes he strengths of the original (ie origin stories) and builds upon the weaknesses (ie graphics)

First of all: I can't play my elven mage in the sequel.
Secondly: I'm not able to choose the race...have to play a human - that's so ... can't find the right words. Are we talking about Dragon Age or not. That's a bit too much for me.

Thank you very much for ruining my pleasant anticipation.
