That'd make sense, if they establish a canon baseline story where Alistair has no heir Ferelden could potentially be in a civil war so you'd be like Calenhad and unify everyone again to become king/queen.

Maybe if they establish a baseline that -whoever you put in power- has no heir then ok. But if Alistair is made canon then it's a big finger to all the entire "your decisions matter" point of the entire first game. Same if they force "The warden had a kid with Morrigan" into canon instead of just "Morrigan had a kid with someone vague".

Now if they set it up to import information from your DAO savegame then by all means let our own choices be used as personal canon. That would be magnificent.

EDIT: Oh,and
romances. Please, please say there will be romances.

This restriction in race could, theoretically speaking, indicate bioware going with a "third person narrative" which... well... read any of the gay-shepard threads on the ME board and you'll know what that could mean.

While there are multiple races in the game, like elves, dwarves, etc, in Dragon Age 2 you play a human character.

I'll be honest, this does put a slight damper on my enthusiasm, but I trust Bioware and I know the writers won't let me down.

Bioware is a very talented studio who in my opinion have made the greatest RPG's to date. I too am leery about the lack of races, but that in no way says their will not be different Origins for Hawke himself. This is a serious shock to me but I'm sure Bioware has a handle on what they are doing.

I don't see it as an issue. Dragon Age Origins had that name because its focus was on Origins. It was it's 'new feature'.

You might notice this one is not called Dragon Age: Origins 2. Just Dragon Age. In fact, on the hotsite there is a 'Rise to Power' that seems to stick out of some sentences. Might as well be this game's 'surname', which ties in to what seems to be this game's 'new feature': building your own empire from scratch.

It's not a step backwards. It's a different story with a different gameplay to fit in.

This.
I was fond of my Dalish elf and other various characters but their story's are done.  C'est fini.  If you want the same old thing then play the same old game.
The point of a trying a new "flavour" seems to be eluding a lot of people here.

But a good sequel takes he strengths of the original (ie origin stories) and builds upon the weaknesses (ie graphics)

Which is wjy I think that, if the game wasn't called Dragon Age 2, but just, say, Dragon Age: Rise to Power, people would consider it less of a sequel and more of a new game in the same game world. It's like the various Star Wars games or novels. It's not necessarely a sequel. It's something different with the same flavour.

I don't mind playing as a human, as long as the game isn't as streamlined down as Mass Effect 2 was. if it turns into a hack & slash game with subtle rpg overtones & dialouge trees, then count me out. Also don't forget to add a skin tone slider Bioware. I liked being ale to at least slightly relate to my Cousland, even if it was only cosmetic.

Also people keep saying the main character is Morrigan's child, what about that crazy looking mage chick? If that's a companion character & not just the female/mage version of the main character, then i could easily see her being Morrigan's kid as well.

I don't know why any of you are surprised. This has been the trend for BioWare for the last year. It's been announced several times that they want to stop giving players massive amounts of choices because then they simply cry for more and they're expensive to create.

In fact I'm willing to bet that any "campfire" dialogue options you get will be along the lines of Awakenings and the downloadable characters from Mass Effect 2. You just click objects to hear them speak with little to no interactivity unless they have something new to add.

The story of Hawke does sound interesting to me though. In fact, I thought DA:O was going to be like ME1 and 2 and was slightly disappointed when it wasn't. That being said limiting choices in an RPG really does take the RP out of it and simply leaves you playing a G -- err... a Game. I certainly don't want to play as a "male" and I think it would be enough for me to not even play this game if there was no "female" option. Currently no info on this so I can't really speculate... Anyway this just turned in to me rambling.

To wrap it up, no one should be surprised by such an announcement. Disappointed? Yes. Not surprised, though. This has been hinted, and I've been expecting it, since a few months after DA:O launched. But please, BioWare. Please, please don't screw up the dialogue options. Don't take away my campfire chats, they were what truly made me play DA:O as much as I did. And yes I know that has nothing to do with this topic... /end ramble

Looks like Morrigan herself. Makes more and more sense if you think about it.

I don't like moaning, but I really must concur with a lot of people's sentiments about this. I really, really wanted to play a Dwarf again, mainly because I am obsessive about Dwarves in general, but it seems a bit limiting to cut the game down to human's only, where your only choice is male or female. I guess you guys know what you're doing, and I have complete faith that it will still be a fantastically brilliant game, just very dissapointed.

Orzammar and the deep roads was by far the best portion of Dragon Age: Origins.

Actually,in ME I felt very cut off from Shepard.I think there's very little emotional connection in the game because your personality and past was very restricted. That's exactly why I love DAO so much.

This.

I agree about Shep and whatnot.

Though while the Deep Roads were awesome, I wish there was more to it than having to go there for a quest. I wish we could explore it even more =D

Not that I have anything against Mass Effect, but I don't think all of their games should be like ME...

This should be a positive. Allows for a tighter story than trying to satisfy multiple angles. Now hoping to get some voice dialogue instead of text!

The costs of adding additional playable races  to a finished product is the reason why BioWare
didn't add any to NWN1 oc (or at least didn't fully integrate the semi-playable drow to NWN in Hotu)

All a matter of the game concept:

NWN 1 oc, unpatched  with no community mods or xp added already had more
classes and races than DA O (all given that was the original DA O concept).
And sorry again - choices begin for me on character creation, weight 50 % of the game
for me due to later consequences , not later on chosing the first multiple choice answer to a npc.

Oh, so everything that was established in DAO is now pointless?
And Bioware has decided to take one step forward and three steps back?
Good to know.

I’ve already played this game; it was called Mass Effect 2, only without swords.

Oh, and EA? Go away.

I personally don't mind sacrificing race origin option as long as I am getting something awesome in return. More complex decision making and consequences perhaps? Maybe a more detailed story since they only have to work with a single origin.

Deeply disappointed about only playing as human, I loved playing as dwarf characters.  Still excited for DA2 though and can't wait to see these enhanced graphics and gameplay.  Dragon Age is replayable enough and although I've already played through it many times I can always come back to it if DA2 disappoints, which I doubt it will do. Also hopeing that it takes place in the Anderfels or Nevarra (Kal - Sharok is somewhat close to both), rather than in Antiva or the Free Marches.
