DA:O is far from pointless, as you'll learn when you play DA2.

I've talked with Design quite a bit about Hawke, the DA2 lead character. There were a lot of directions that they could have gone, but ultimately, I think they made the right choice to tell the best story in this installment. Between now and launch, you'll learn more about Hawke and the story, which will shed a little more light on why Hawke was the hero that the world (i.e. this story) needed.

HAH! HAHAHAHAHA!

yah..you're turning it into a Mass Effect bite-off....Hawke? seriously? so now we're shoe-horned into this ****** like Shepard..and you're only allowing us to choose male or female..WOW..sounds EXACTLY like Shepard.

do you people have any creative talent left in you?  you REALLY think turning Dragon Age into Mass Effect with swords is a ****ing good thing?

whatever you want to tell youself "dudebro"

I'm disappointed. Not so much with the lack of racial choices, since I just played 2 classes at human, but the lack of continuity. I mean, I loved all the characters in Dragon Age. I wanted to continue with my character and develop her story. I understand fresh characters make it fun, but come on! Shale, Morrigan, Leliana, Alistair! There was a story there that isn't finished.

This isn't even really like Mass Effect since Shephard interacts(mostly) with all his/her old pals. It makes for an epic yarn and that's why I love playing that game. I am sad Bioware. Very sad.

I can explain why they didn't and sort of can't continue with the Warden of Origins.

First of all, the Blight is over. The Grey Wardens are now just guardians of something that MIGHT be over, depending on your choices in Awakening. Plus, after Awakening the Warden didn't stay as Commander of the Grey for much longer, and eventually disappears.

Besides, Wardens die young. Chances are this takes place when your Warden already has, or soon will go on his Calling in the Deep Roads, where he will die killing Darkspawn, or turn into one himself.

No, dwarven-human babies result in a half-ling, it's only elven genes that are dominated by human ones.  I read this on a bioware forum once from a bioware official poster, but I can't remember who or where - will update one I find the link :)

EDIT:  This was said by Mr Gaider:

Incidentally, for half-dwarves the situation is a bit different. Dwarves aren't a very fertile race to begin with, and far less so when it comes to mating with humans and elves. In fact, it would be considered rare... rare enough that it's considered more of an oddity than a group of its own. The result is also less stigmatized... primarily because it's also less noticeable. You end up with what would appear to be a tall dwarf or a short human. That calls for a new model -- which we weren't going to get, even if we wanted to address such a rare case. Again, it's certainly something we could do in the future, though such a character would still be considered unusual.

Wow, no details have even been dropped for the game yet and already you lot are whining like a bunch of enraged fanboys. Give it some time yeah? Besides the guy on the cover is most likely a party character or a Logain type character, no need to cry when you don't even know what's what yet.

Finally someone with sense around here !!

I'm happy about this. One defined character allows for less connections that have to be made with different origin stories, which means more freedom with characters, stories, etc. The origin stories were only a thirty minute to one hour precursor to the game, and in the sequel, we have ten years to make Hawke whoever we want. Plus, Bioware has the freedom to connect Hawke to more meaningful and interesting people that actually have things to do with the plot (Like Arl Howe in the human origin but more defined).

Wait... Guys? What happens if you want to be a Mage? All mages are sent to the Circle at a young age, unless they are hidden, but I doubt a commoner family could hide a mage for so long... PLOT HOLE DETECTED! Maybe...

I find it funny that everyone has become angery to the fact that they can't play as their favorite race.

Nothing strange about that. I was already scratching my head when it turned out DA O offered  only 3 rplayable races when you stumble over q'nari in countless dungeons.

I hope DA RTP remains an exception - if I want to play a Gothic  (german rpg series)  style game, I don't look for Bioware.

All of BioWares creative talent vanished when EA took them over. Its now all gone to work for CCP who makes Eve Online.

Seems like DA:O would be for nothing <_<

Me says goodbye to my elves and dwarves, wasn't Dragon Age: Origins supposed to be a return to the roots? What now that DA:O is over DA2 is a 'return to the present' or more better 'return to ME'?

Not even RPG since they make all the choices for you.

Like ME2 where they went and cut out the majority of the RPG elements and made the game even more linear.

Where'd you get that. You can't choose the race. Gender, class, talents (if there will be such a thing) are still up to us. Not to mention the choices we make during the game.

Can we wait until we have more information before starting to make veredicts?

DA2 will also have a similar conversation system to Awakening, if that's worth mentioning. From what I can guess at the moment, there will be a more controlled storyline.

Says who? This sounds like a ton of speculation to me. We hardly know anything about the game and you're throwing things out like that? Be careful with what you say, please. And back up things with proof.

I was referring to the conversation that David Garder had 3 months ago on the General Awakening forum.

While there are multiple races in the game, like elves, dwarves, etc, in Dragon Age 2 you play a human character.

thats actually not disappointing to me.  I wonder if there were specific reasons for this??  Im guessing it allows the story to address your character more thoroughly?  allow for sequels?

Damn right there was a reason for this. It is called voiceovers. It's a shame that whole RPG elements and fundamental gameplay elements are stripped out of games nowadays because of things like voiceovers. I've read so much Mass Effect topic, where people were whining about the lack of VO, and that this made the game flat and boring. Obviously Bioware cares more about them, than the fans of the first DA, and the oldschool RPG-s.

So you can consider this purchase revoked from me. A dragon age game without complete character customization and unique story presentation is a blasphemy against the consumers who purchased the first game. Way to smack us all in the face Bioware.
