Hmm, we play as Hawke

I also was appalled by the new ending slides for my character in Awakening, so I'm pretending it's not canon, and ignoring anything beyond the end of DA:O when it comes to her. I'll be glad to have a new character in DA2, so that maybe this time, she can have an uncorrupted happy ending...

I think the reason for the Shepardization of Origins is that perhaps EA didn't make enough money to justify the amount of work that a 10 years period would demand for the usual variety of starting char? Either that or they are just in a hurry to release it and grab more money because it surely is a lot faster to develop 1male/1female character, VO, etc..

While I have joined in the speculation, I do like how much speculation fans of bioware can give to two art items, and a paragraph blurb. Guess it gives us something to do for 11 days till the magazine comes out.
You didn't read this, did you?

While I do enjoy having fun with our fans, I am not joking about this. The player character is a human (either male or female) with the last name of Hawke. Dragon Age 2 is the story of Hawke. From the Dragon Age 2 press release:
Dragon Age 2 thrusts players into the role of Hawke, a penniless refugee who rises to power to become the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age. Known to be a survivor of the Blight and the Champion of Kirkwall, the legend around Hawke’s rise to power is shrouded in myth and rumor. Featuring an all-new story spanning 10 years, players will help tell that tale by making tough moral choices, gathering the deadliest of allies, amassing fame and fortune, and sealing their place in history. The way you play will write the story of how the world is changed forever.

If the story is good enough, you'll want to play it again anyway.
Yeah, maybe5 or 6 times like The Witcher which is really good. Over 20 like DA:O or over 5 years like NWN mplayer? I really doubt it.

Its not a deal breaker for me like it was in the Witcher, but I'd still like to know. I hated how Geralt looked, but I think Hawke looks pretty cool. Regardless, I'd rather have a custom Hawke than a pre set one.

Well, Shepard's face is, isn't it? Geralt is a pre-game existing character. Wouldn't make sense to customize his face just as it wouldn't if you play as Peter Parker/Spider Man

I'll only be satisfied if Hawke is related to your prior Grey Warden

The other point that worries me is the "more dynamic combat system" quote from the press release. I'm hoping that doesn't mean the combat will be less tactical and, instead, more action oriented.

Yeah! because the main storyline wasn't resolved at all in DA:O!

Also, I for one am glad that this is no direct sequel, for one simple reason: my canon character, the only one I finished the game with, the only one I'm emotionally attached to, is dead. As a doornail. Yup, Ultimate Sacrifice. Nothing beats a good heroic death. By starting fresh with a new character, hopefully they will be less tempted to canonize a One True Warden which I would loathe, just as I loathed Lucas Arts retconning a gender on Revan. And admit it, folks, everyone has their own little fantasy about what your surviving Wardens' future would be like. There is no way that they could remotely satisfy the crowd that didn't sacrifice their character, there are just too many possibilities even in the canon endings, nevermind people's fantasy. The Ultimate Sacrifice is the perfect ending partly because it leaves no loose strings.
But yes, I too am a bit concerned about the game being dumbed down ME2-style (one reason why I did not buy that one). I hope Hawke will not be fully voiced, as that would be bound to cut the budget for other features.

Whine more, it seems like nobody has faith for Bioware anymore.
valid complaints are not whining-
i lost faith in bioware when they released mass effect 2,
the move to action for me2 was just about the games only strong point. it seems to me that bethseda is going no where but up, bioware down.
"Valid complaints" based on rumors some fans came up with? Bioware hasn't mentioned anywhere that Hawke is a human male, only as an iconic canon character. If people truly belive that you can't custumize your character in terms of looks, gender and race then I belive you've really lost faith in Bioware.

haha yeah me for one. origins was meant to be getting back to biowares fantasy rpg roots seems like this only lasted one game guess baldurs gate 2 isnt going to be the inspiration behind this one, as you suspect i guess this is going to be a fantasy mass effect
plus its going to be a shame if my pc from DAO will never get to have a decent ending to his story guess he probably just looked for morrigan until he died of old age

And its so hard to believe that race-choice is the only thing that is gone.
I do not want a medieval mass effect, the way settings was created made me want to play only elfs.
Truly, I wanted to play DA2 the moment I finished DAO first time. And now I do not.
Its unpleasant thought. And I can only think of the things that will turn this thought into `lets not buy it` one.

I'm with the theory that Hawke is going to be a default name everyone calls our character since Warden is no longer an option. The question is, will Hawke be fully voiced like Mass Efffect's Shepard or is this just a means for NPCs to easily address her/him? I would be very surprised if BioWare locked us into playing a male. It's not like them at all. Too bad about being limited to humans though. That doesn't bother me since I always play humans, but I can see why others would be annoyed by the news.
So there goes the continuation of the Wardens storyline. There goes my romance and my decisions. What an utter failure. So sad.

As for no origin stories i don't really care about that. The point of scrapping them may well be to focus on a stronger overall plot and they only really had effect on a tiny portion of the first DAO anyway.

yeah same for me my characters ending suddenly just seems realy depressing kinda wish hed just died in many ways would have been better for him. also if hawke is what people call you in this game they could have thought of something better. Shepard sounds right Hawke just seems a bit tacky

1) A canonized One True Way of Playing Origins (guaranteed to be male, straight and having f*cked Morrigan). Too bad for everyone who didn't play the game "right", eh?
2) A very generic premise that barely touches on any choices you made, doesn't try to explain how the various endings of the first game could lead to the sequel, and basically treats everyone the same.
I can't see how either choice would be a good thing. Both would make every choice we had in Origins totally meaningless.

I personally would prefer it to stay as is, silent character etc, but to be honest aslong as I get to choose the appearance of my character i'm happy.
