Hawke will become a famous General in Ferelden. There will be a new threat to Ferelden. This threat will be a terrorist group called Adder headed by a mysterious man named Steve who wears a lamp shade on his head covering his face making him more mysterious. Hawke will create an elite Ferelden commando untit to confront this new threat like the Wardens of yore. This new unit will be DA: Jones (A Real Ferelden Hero). Hawke will have several unique companions: Red an acrobatic archer woman, Serpent Eyes a sword wielding assassin who doesn't talk and has his own wardog named Log, A Golem named Trail Gate, and many more.

@Ryllen Laerth: Not to worry, "Hawke" will be the last name. BTW, I also hope for a non-voiced character during conversations Image IPB

I have an issue with the name Hawke as the last name actually. Does that sound dwarven to you or elven? I hope it's not set in stone. Could it be a nickname given to the PC? That's the best case I can c ome up with, but still that imposes limitations on the players when creating their character.

EDIT: I just read the comment by Priestly saying that the main character has to be human...great.

Humans are my preference so that doesn't bother me. I'm happy to wait and see what the game has to offer before putting the boot in, so to speak. I have enjoyed all the Bioware games I've played (which is all those on PC) with the exception of NWN (I did like Obsidian's sequel very much though). So I have faith that this will be a good offering. I just hope it's not dumbed down, but I can't see, logically, why it would be. ME was an RPG/shooter hybrid, and thus attracted a lot of the shooter crowd. It's logical that they would streamline it a bit for that audience. DA, however, was always an RPG and they'd be daft to move away from that. I don't see many FPS-types getting excited over dragons and fantasy.

I would hope that the Warden's story is finished, one way or another - I hate the lack of closure. But I'm not too disappointed that I won't be playing the Warden.

As long as I can play a woman, I don't mind having my character name determined by the game. This is no different from the surname following the origin in the first game. Although "Hawke" does not have anywhere near the same "flavor" and appeal as Cousland, Aeducan or Mahariel. Those names were unique. "Hawke" is just an animal with an extra "e" to make it sound more "special".

Also, I for one am glad that this is no direct sequel, for one simple reason: my canon character, the only one I finished the game with, the only one I'm emotionally attached to, is dead. As a doornail. Yup, Ultimate Sacrifice. Nothing beats a good heroic death. By starting fresh with a new character, hopefully they will be less tempted to canonize a One True Warden™ which I would loathe, just as I loathed Lucas Arts retconning a gender on Revan. And admit it, folks, everyone has their own little fantasy about what your surviving Wardens' future would be like. There is no way that they could remotely satisfy the crowd that didn't sacrifice their character, there are just too many possibilities even in the canon endings, nevermind people's fantasy. The Ultimate Sacrifice is the perfect ending partly because it leaves no loose strings.

But yes, I too am a bit concerned about the game being dumbed down ME2-style (one reason why I did not buy that one). I hope Hawke will not be fully voiced, as that would be bound to cut the budget for other features.

I was pretty bummed to hear our DA:O characters won't be carried over.  Probably my #1 disappointment.  (#2 would be DA:O companions not returning either.)

But I will say I'm a bit appeased after reading your post.  I can't argue with your reasoning there.  I'd rather say goodbye to my Warden than have a "One True Warden".

With that out of the way, gotta say I'm surprised out the number of people being against a fully-voiced PC.  It's reasonable to feel that a VA would take away from the budget.  But for me, voice acting is not something I want BioWare to skimp on.  =]

As for (one of) my DA2 characters...I think I'll name one of them Lunamaria Hawke.  Props to those who recognize it.  :wizard:

dissapointing but i will wait to see gameplay video before i get nerd rage which probally wont happen untill next year sometime. But what does kinda ****** me off is my wardens stry is over at awakenings?? to me that is some BS where the F did morrigan go? Mybe just maybe this "hawke" is the child that morrigan concevied and is the blight surviver.

Hawke is Morrigan's child? Hmm, I didn't even think of that. You may have just completely shattered the entire story by inadvertently spoiling the game's plot twist. Image IPB

Its been confirmed with a link that Hawke is NOT morrigans child, unfortunatley i am to lazy to track down said link tee hee(manly giggles) :P

LOL thanks for letting me know then.

What's the big deal? As far as I can tell, the only way character creation is limited compared to Origins is that you can't be a dwarf or elf. It's really quite likely that you'll be able to choose your PC's first name, gender, class and appearance, as in both Origins and the Mass Effect games.

Of course it would be cooler if we could play other races - but I suspect the tradeoff is that having only one playable race will free up more time and space for writing more good dialogue that doesn't have to be branched depending on race. A certain amount of constraint on the player's options is necessary if a game is going to have a coherent, engaging story, so in a way limiting it to humans actually opens up more possibilities.

Having a fixed last name like ME's Commander Shepard doesn't necessarily mean that Hawke will have voiced dialogue like Shepard. It's convenient to have a way to refer to the PC, especially if he/she doesn't fit neatly into one group as does the Grey Warden. It's also nice to have NPCs able to call you by name.

I have always picked human as well, and it sounds like they're going the mass effect/KOTOR route, a pre-defined back story and race but you pick gender, looks, personality, etc. Not a bad thing as I hugly enjoyed ME1.

On another note though I'm a little dissapointed that you can't, from the little we've been told so far, import you DA:O character like in ME2. hopefully the choices you picked in DAO are imported into the other, especially if it picks off right where the blight ended, ie the end of DAO. maybe bump into your DAO character if he is still alive.

Cousland sounds better than Hawke, Hawke sounds like a fail superhero from the 80's, unless they pull off a pronunciation thing and pronounce it as Haw KAY, that might be okay... maybe..

What's the point in having elves and dwarves in the DA universe if you can't play as them?

Kind of a waste if you ask me.

What? No, dwarves are good to have fun with and elves are good to make fun of.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't think I'll be buying this one. I had human characters in DA:O but I also had dwarven and elven ones. I enjoyed the difference of the playthroughs. I played Mass Effect twice and felt no need to go back, though the story was good. I played a male and female character in ME, and Shepard is only slightly different so what's the point? Now that they've limited it to a human, it's likely not going to be worth playing more than once or twice and during those times I'll just be pissed off, saying to myself "dammit, I wish I could make a dwarf or elf to switch to." Presumably, there will still be dwarves and elves as companions. DA2 is sounding like a more personal story (one person's rise to power as opposed to 'OH MY GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE WIPED OUT, WHO WILL SAVE US???'), so a pre-defined origin makes more sense than in the first game. Should still be good, though.
