and, it would be nice if we could choose our "lineage." In the DA lore, human + elf children are human, even though technically they have both human and elf blood in them.
I would like to be able to define my Hawke's parents as both being human, or one human and the other elf, and have that reflect in my character's story.

I passed on ME/ME2 because of the predetermined character. I do not enjoy playing predetermined characters. I love story, and Bioware has a history of great story telling. But when I roll up a character I like having my own name choice, or nickname choice, because I am more likely to care about my character, than I am a predetermined character. By only giving me the option to choose appearance and class, this is little choice in character customization period.

Mass Effect is great and I enjoy playing it, but as umpteen other posters have said in umpteen other threads, the two games were great in different ways...I really hope we're not turning one into the other.
I guess the story taking place over a decade is supposed to give an 'origins' like feel to it, but if there's only one option to begin with (human survivor), I don't see how it really captures the spirit of the original. (random musing: unless maybe your first character alters the state of the world and then you switch to another character and play the rest of it? hmm, could be interesting. but doesn't seem like what they're going for.)

If this is the case, this will be the second Bioware game/series I've passed on, which is sad because I fully support DAO.

Nickname as in Jason Shepard, or Jack Shepard or Wallace shepard or my favorite) Shelly Shepard?
all that has been predetermined in ME was the last name, which made sense given that the voiced characters were calling you by your last name, which to me sounded a lot better than if they just called you "human" or "Spectre" The only option they have confirmed removing so far is race, which depending on how the story turns out could make for a much larger, more expansive story. The origins were awesome, and I loved the way some of them played out, but I would trade it in a hot minute for the middle of the game connecting closer to the PC as opposed to just the companions. The only real complaint I had with DAO was that through a lot of it you are just an interloper, you might as well have been from a different planet, I am hoping the more pre-made approach will make for a more organic storytelling. Either way Worth at least a rental from Gamefly

Hawke isn't male-specific. I just read a fantasy novel (Dragon's Winter), actually, where the main femme was named Hawk.Valmy wrote...

Got to be his last name. How could we be a female with a first name like Hawke?
I'm with the theory that we can choose our gender.

It isn't a theory. You can choose gender, and Hawke is the surname.

My city elf is sooo po'd right about now! While I realize that they are going for a new slant on the "experience" I have played ME, liked it, but preffered DA because of the different races and backgrounds. It is an emersive game, and though I will be loyal which Bioware is counting on I am hoping that they make up for the lack of choice where it counts. Hope you are reading this developers! No watered down console game... am a PC gamer, want a PC game! No offense to the console gamers, own one myself, but the PC is soooo much better.

Hell yeah! We've got to play by a clone of Duncan (that black-bearded guy), what's more, entire game we'll have to run in a beautiful purple tights and with double samurai swords! Oh, I forgot to mention that our character'll suffer a fear of blood (blood phobia), so we'll experience a charming passive skill called "Blood Faint". :>

He was a funny Moron.
Don't know what to think about this. Seems that all your decisions from the last game don't carry over? That would be horrible, I loved my dalish elf. He had a great adventure and I would've loved it if he continued the story in DA2. Especially his search for Morrigan.
It seems the new direction of DA2 is more like ME: more interactive movie, less roleplay - to exaggerate a little.

forced to fight for survival in an ever-changing world, you must gather
the deadliest of allies, amass fame and fortune, and seal your place in
history. This is the story of how the world changed forever. The legend
of your Rise to Power begins now." -- This is somewhat similar to the nameless hero in Gothic series.

I think its too soon for me to say whether or not im disappointed in this decision, but i do find it strange addressing a female as 'Hawke' as it seems quite masculine, *sigh* i guess i'll just have to wait and see.

Play it on the PS3 almost everyday. T.Hawk always grabs me out of nowhere, and totally pwns the heck out of me. Anyways, I never thought of that; I think I will name my Hawke--T. Hawke lol.
