According to this article which states that our hero Hawke will be champion of Kirkwall and this map (go little up from West Hill) it is more than clear that second dragon age chapter will be set in Free Marches :)

Some facts about this land:

The Free Marches is a country located in the south of Thedas, north of Ferelden. Little is known of the country except that it was once known for raiding the northern seaboard of Ferelden. It has no single capital city, but consists of collection of independent city-states.

Nevarra started out as merely a member of the Free Marches, but has risen in size and power way beyond any of its peers. Its origin likely comes from that of Northern Italy due to its city state infrastructure.
However, personal and place names in the Free Marches have a Dutch ring to them and the aforementioned raids resemble Viking behavior. Both imply a relationship to Northern Germanic peoples, specifically the Hanseatic
League. It is possible it is meant to be based off of the Holy Roman Empire, a real-life collection of Germanic states.

This, in fact, seems like a Kirkwall to me :)

hmm, that's right, it could be also Cumberland just on the border of Free Marches and Nevarra - but notice the sea in the back - it is somewhere on the seaboard.

If we're sticking to the official map, this could either be the bridge in Orlais (near Val Royeaux) or the bridge in Nevarra on the way to Tevinter (centre of the map). I'm not entirely convinced that is the sea in the background there. It doesn't look long enough to be the bridge that crosses the Waking Sea to Val Royeaux (and the map implies the bridge is broken anyway since it isn't a straight line). For some reason it looks very Dwarven to me but why would dwaves have a bridge above ground, wish there was less fog in that picture so we could see more detail :)

Personally I am leaning towards the Nevarra option, with a centralised location we could really be allowed to stretch out in Thedas in Dragon Age 2 and the little explorer in me is all excited about that. Plus this puts us ever closer to Weisshaupt Fortress..

We can't really look at concept art for accurate geographic information, although it is very lovely.

Since there's so little known about the Free Marches, this will be very interesting. I still hope we get to see Orlais this time around, I've heard the Grand Cathedral in Val Royeaux is marvelous...

Even lore wise I don't recall much in my codex on the Free Marches, other then one article I think.

The way they say the story still confuses the heck out of me, as I guess it's some well known guy I don't recall reading about.

Guess I'll find out when we see the trailer or July 19 when mag hits the stands.

Free Marshes causes me to think of vikings. Kind of surprising as recent MMO's (Wrath of the Lich King for WoW and others) have done the "Go North" thing already. Figured Bioware would go France (Orlais) or Spain (Antiva) or something along those lines.  Not complaining.  Just surprised.  Also, details matter on settings--maybe their spin on it will make things interesting.

Go north has been done far before Wow , think back to the Icewind Dale series. Even Diablo expansion.

People just like snow and ice, it makes things seem alot different then altered structure.

Just my two cents.

Keep in mind that Ferelden is in the southern hemisphere. Going north doesn't imply cold.

Pretty cool :) I am eager to explore new areas of Thedas.

That said, I still want to see Orlais badly, since Origins and its expansions and DLC focus so much on the Ferelden/Orlais relationship.

Free Marches makes sense if its all about a rise to power. The whole city states thing makes sense there.

Agreed, I hope the area does have a different look, not merely Ferelden with different names.

ok I have the story it's gonna be easy to predict the woman in the concept art is either Morrigan or her daughter and the story is gonna revolve around you uniting the free marches come together and become a country because up to DAO the country has no "unitedness"

an interesting idea, that can be possible, knowing that Hawke is one of the most important person in Thedas, the one who will perhpas unite under the same banner all the city states of the Free Marches.

About the kind of environment we could see, it is said that the Free Marches are the breadbasket of Thedas, the source of Thedas's food.So we can simply imagine fields and fields and more fields :D (Prima Guide collector, page 347)

That's not a bad guess as to Hawke's destiny and activities in the area.  I'm going to be surprised if the white haired woman isn't Morrigan as the 10 year time frame that starts with an escape from Lothering during the Blight pretty much limits the age of any child.
