Am I the only one seeing similarities between the story description on the DA2 webpage and the story of Conan the Barbarian? It sounds suitably epic - to rise from nothing to become the ruler of the land on the strength of your fighting skill.

That said, it reminds me of the Fable series too, but although I enjoy the Fable games for what they are, I hope when I play DA2 I am indeed reminded of the epic story of Conan rather than Lionhead's RPG-lite series.

And it'll end when he's Governator of Thedas.

(I HAD to - I'll try to find better material next time)

Depends, are we talking Conan of the movies or the stories.

Funny, I was immediately reminded of Frank Frazetta and Conan when seeing the GI cover.

As for the Fable comparisons.. this disappoints me. The whole rise from humble upbringings thing to become king has been done to death. Doesn't mean it can't be good, but on paper its a tired trope.

We shall crush our enemies, see them flee before us and hear the lamentation of their women.

I kind of like it. Cliche sure, done before sure, but it's like having a pair of old well worn comfortable shoes.

The stories. I don't think he become King of Aquilonia in the movies, did he?

Fable II was the very first thing that sprung into my head.
The copywriter practically just picked from a vault of "standard RPG claims".  If you cover the word Dragon Age it could be about anything.

I know it's going to be its own unique thing, but the synopsis on the site does it no favours.

Oh. Maybe they'll get the Governor of California to voice Hawke. That'd be cool.

This is bound to be a different beast, though. As much as I appreciate Molyneux for his love of games and his willingness to try new things, story and plot writing is never his strong suit. Fable 2's passage of time was extremely cursory and ultimately pretty meaningless.

I trust Bioware to fulfill the promise of an epic decade-long storyline far more than I'd trust Lionhead.

Actually, the story also reminds of me the debacle known as Fable.

It is worn I guess but so are most classic stories.

Spoilers below this line to past rpgs bioware and otherwise

Baldur's Gate- Brother's Betray

Jade Empire-Mentor turns on apprentice

Kotor- Identity Crisis/Amnesia

Kotor 2-Exiled hero

Fable - Rise of a hero

Fable 2- Rise of a hero redux

Oblivion-Prisoner Escape

Fallout 3-Following Family

Mass Effect-Visions

I mean the list goes on and on. I mean each year more ideas are used and less ideas are original. I mean while I love bioware games, I havn't had a original mind blowing story since Planescape. I love bioware mostly because they take classic stories, and fill them richly with interesting characters and good dialogue (also kick ass music of late).

they hinted at it. But Conan in the stories was not really a victim of tragedy, but merely and a man with a sense of adventure and unsatiable wanderlust.

Either way, he rose from being just another warrior to become a king, using both brawn and brains.

Hawke = Gutz from berserk, same look (minus the beard) armor & same gauntlet hand

If you don't know Berserk you're all the more ignorant for it

Yeah, I don't know whether I should be legitimately concerned over the actual game or if this is all a case of marketing trying to portray the game in a certain light (like the Marilyn Manson EXTREME! trailer and all the heavy metal rubbish for Origins)

I just realised something. Since the protagonist's surname is Hawke, I can now call my male character Sparrow and have it be a reference to both Fable 2 AND The Wizard of Earthsea!

Actually, there's already an article written comparing the similarities of the vague general things we've heard so far to upcoming Fable III. While it's way too early to compare in any detail, they do make a couple halfway decent points... perhaps.

Considering how dark Beserk is, Dragon Age 2 would be seriously dark if it followed in Beserk's footsteps.

I do agree that I have seen rags to riches before, most recently in the Dwarven Commoner and City Elf Origins of DAO. But even they were nothing new, nor do I expect them to be as a thematic base.

What I did see were two stories completly unique to the new game world in which they were based , and stories that emoted conviction, determination, vengeance, and other like POV depending on the Player behind the eyes of the character in question.

True, but a story isn't just the plot itself, it's how that plot is developed and told.  Quite a number of the best films use standard/classic plots, but it's how they tell that story, the characters and the performances that make them good movies.  The same is what makes a number of those games good

As an aside, if this is based on Conan, will we kill the King of Kirkwall on the steps of his own throne to take his place then? :P
