What was the point of origin stories if we're starting over?

First, let me say that I'm extremely excited about the DA2 announcement, and regardless, I'm sure the game will be incredible as was the first.

But...  Didn't they trump the whole origin story thing by implying that it was the start of a (possible) 3-game series with your original character, much like Mass Effect?  Why concentrate so much on origin stories and background in DAO  when your character isn't playable beyond it?

I don't think it was ever indicated or implied that your original character would go beyond the first game.

I certainly never got that expectation from anything Bioware said.

When did they ever say that? It was the origin for your Dragon Age: Origins character. This new character has a set origin!

I never the got the implication that DA was going to be a trilogy with your DAO character. I did, however, make the assumption that the origins mechanic would be present in the other DA games. I was wrong, I guess.

They said all your choices will still affect the land.

I know plenty of players threw that around like it was fact, Bioware never said that however.

Agreed. In fact, I got the impression that future Dragon Age games would definately not focus on the same characters, but would instead each be individual stories in the same setting. And hey, guess what?

It's two different groups. You've got one group mad that the character dosn't carry over, similiar to recent ME 2. You have another group mad that the origin mechanic isn't in place.

Personally I'm the later, I wouldn't have minded making a new char, I just would have liked some different origins again.

The origin stories would not be completely thrown out me thinks, and here's why: It's mentioned in the press release that Hawke's exact history is shrouded in mystery and legends, so the actual happenings can be Origin stories. That's my opinion at least :).

EDIT: also, continuing with the Warden seems kinda.... strange for me. I haven't finished Awakening yet, so I don't know what actually happens in the end, but since being a Warden is all about sacrifice, no two ways about it, you either become mad or you die, or you start becoming mad and go to a scary place to die. Plus, Blight's are not that frequent as far as I know, so I'm interested in the storyline.

Then you have me and people like me, who always thought that the character wouldn't carry over, and are forestalling opinion on the lack of origins until we know more.

Losing the Origins doesn't bother me so long as the payoff is a plot that hinges entirely upon Hawke's past and future.

Losing Origins doesn't bother me, because making the wasted development time that could have made the MAIN QUEST longer and more epic.

I admit BioWare never outright stated your character continues. However... Back when they were talking about the whole concept of origins for your character (pre-release), they talked about it being the beginning of a big adventure. Alas it was, in the original game, but many of their comments suggested the reason they put SO much emphasis on origins and giving your character background, was because it meant your PC carried on over multiple games. PLUS, you have the whole Mass Effect trilogy parallel with a single character.

I'm not upset, just confused. I was hoping for a Baldur's Gate 1/2 scenario, where your character carried over. Oh yeah, and didn't they call DA the "spiritual successor"?

Just sayin'.

I always thought that the "Origin" in the first game was about the child and not your character. I don't really mind playing as a set human character (as long as I can play female) as I never really got into the other races.

I would imagine it's this last blight we played in DA.

And yes, you can play a female Hawke.

Considering Hawke doesn't look hundreds of years old, and that the game must occur in the Dragon Age, it'll be Urthemiel's Blight.

I will say that if this means our PC will actually have a voice this time, I'm OK with it.

Yea I kind of figured you'd be me morrigan's kid considering that even if you said no to her, and no one else went with her, you still got the ending that she might be with child when she wandered off.

But whose child would it be if not my Warden's or Alistairs?

Riordan's, perhaps?
