So Hawk's story, is this before or after DA:O I wonder...

He/She is a survivor of the Blight, so after.

Actually, DA2 takes place over 10 years, so it spans quite a wide ramge of events.

I don't care about my Warden's story continuing, I do however care that they've abandoned the idea of Origin stories as a game mechanic in favour of: "Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land."

Can you get any more generic Bioware?

EDIT:

or do we get to pick what type of poor destitue refugee?  Maybe one origin could be like THE MERCHANTS SON and the other the BAKERS DAUGHTER and like, you could have a totally different destitute refugee experience depending on which one you picked.

Yes, either that or she found some funky ritual that didn't require a warden.

Hmm. Does this mean some of the game might take place during the events of DAO? Interesting...

Yea I kind of figured you'd be me morrigan's kid considering that even if you said no to her, and no one else went with her, you still got the ending that she might be with child when she wandered off.

No you didn't. You got that ending if you had sex with her at any point, even if you refused the Dark Ritual. If you never slept with Morrigan, you get a different ending where she leaves and turns up in a court in Orlais.

If this is true, then it can't be Morrigan's child.

Bioware didn't explicitly state that you could carry over your character, but I think it was a reasonable thing to expect, since both Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate (and thus, all sequels created by Bioware so far) had that option. Especially considering the big deal they made out of the Origin stories, and considering that DA had the greatest focus on character customization of all Bioware games, I'm a bit baffled that they threw out this aspect so completely.

They probably did it so they could have a voiced protagonist like Shepherd for DA, as many complained that the DA:O protagonist was mute, but I don't think it's the right course to take for this franchise. Sure, a voice might give the character more personality, but it will be a personality not of the player's choice, which was one of the best aspect of Origins to me. I enjoyed playing an Elven Mage, and I'm not keen to have that trite 'Grizzled Human Survivor" chliché forced upon me...

Maybe it was exactly the large amount of freedom you had in creating your character that led to the decision that he can't carry over, as it would probably have taken a ridiculous amount of work to implement different dialogue options depending on the myriad of choices every player made in Origins. Mass Effect also has choices during gameplay, but at least the characters are always responding to a human spectre who made those choices. With Dragon Age, the imported characters would be a far more varied lot.

I'm not exactly optimistic at this new direction, but then again, Bioware has never failed to deliver in terms of great writing and memorable characters, so who knows

So hypohetically, Hawke's story and DA2 could start before the Blight in Origins and end after it? We're not dealing with some 100 year leap into the future rubbish are we?

Still, I would have liked to see more of a closer for my warden's story. But that's just my opinion.

I admit BioWare never outright stated your character continues. However... Back when they were talking about the whole concept of origins for your character (pre-release), they talked about it being the beginning of a big adventure. Alas it was, in the original game, but many of their comments suggested the reason they put SO much emphasis on origins and giving your character background, was because it meant your PC carried on over multiple games. PLUS, you have the whole Mass Effect trilogy parallel with a single character.

I'm not upset, just confused. I was hoping for a Baldur's Gate 1/2 scenario, where your character carried over. Oh yeah, and didn't they call DA the "spiritual successor"?

Just sayin'.

This. I also thought that with that whole "spiritual successor" thing they would go by BG's route and we'd get a huge epic story with recurring characters and same PC. Now I'm really disappointed by their design decisions. :?

I agree, i don't want to start over. I want it to continue like Mass effect did, not start all over.

I'm more pissed about the lack of the origin game mechanic than the lack of my GW, who I honestly don't care about.

Well, I and a lot of others DO want to start over. The endings for DA:O were fine, the story was over. Though if you got Awakenings that might have been spoiled for you, I guess.

You know I'd show a little more respect to Bioware considering they're spending their time making a game while we all just sit here and do nothing. No wonder they hardly visit the forums, with this kind of attitude from fans I wouldn't want to visit either.

It was not mandatory to import your character in BG II or ME2, so you could start over if you wanted to. For those of us who don't, an import feature would still have been great.

I second the question as to when this game is set. Before, during or after the events of DA:O.

That's completely different. The protagonists in those sequels were the same person, story-wise.

Before all the questions in my mind, I would like to ask ......

Are we still in Ferelden ? Because 10 years is not a small time since at first game we stopped a blight in near 1 year. I wonder what can we accomplish in 10 years , Ferelden can be small for us now ! Let the gates of Orlais open !

I was hoping to chase after Morrigan in DA2 and now everything gone

*cry like a little girl*

oh and i was expecting the direct sequel so i can finish up and find out some unfinish question in DA:O.

I think they going to import your choice in the first game but i want to play with my old friend(Sten) again.

Plus i thought Warden have about 30 years to live and if you have child with morrigan it suppose to remove the taint right?

And the combat is one reason why i like DA more than ME1&2. so please dont make it like ME.

This could still mean anything, people. It could indeed mean that DA2 starts before Origins, and ends after it, it could also mean it starts 20 years after it and ends 30 years after it.
It could also mean it takes place hundreds of years in the past or the future. It litterally says nothing other than the story ends 10 years after it started.

Really, unless someone from Bioware says 'yes, the story begins before DA:O' or 'no, it begins after', don't assume either is true.

The Free Marches, apparently.
