If the currently complaining member  continues to avoid biting the bullet and starting to swap SODIMMs around to get rid of the bad one, patching isn't going to answer for the errors that he's complaining about (incidentally, there has also been an exchange of PMs overnight last night, when it didn't seem that the source for the memory error was understood, and he asked pretty much the same thing as the last message he'd added in here).

^ I can confirm this, both the disc version and the steam version have no issues with either 64bit or 32bit Windows 7. Although if you are using the steam version trying to make it run in XP compatability causes a conflict.

I recently changed my operative system to windows 7 64bits and i can also confirm that it runs fine. Just remember, run it as admin and in compatibility mode to windows xp. I was general protection fault errors until i did the mentioned changes.

The XP compat mode only applies for non-steam versions, putting a steam game in compatibility mode can cause steam to break.

With respect to laptops vs. desktops I think some people here are simply being unobjective and illogical. Fact is, even an entry level Intel graphics card will allow you to play older games like KOTOR without any problems. (Generally speaking, any game that is more than 3-4 years old will run without any problems even on an entry-level contemporary Intel video card)

However, to play the latest games like Mass Effect on a laptop, you'd probably need a model like this one:

http://www.notebookc...ok.41544.0.html

or

http://www.notebookc...ok.41706.0.html

And if all you care about is to be able to play games on a PC, then a desktop which is relatively cheaper would be a better investment. The most cost effective investment is to have 2 computers, a relatively cheap entry level but reliable laptop for mobility and general use, and a self-assembled desktop for top-level gaming with a top-level graphics card (which by themselves aren't actually expensive). This way you can have both mobility and top-level gaming performance. There is no point really in buying a very expensive laptop, because apart from top-level gaming, functionally it's basically exactly the same as a reliable entry-level laptop.

Basically, any laptop that can convincingly run the latest games properly would cost at least £1000 or more (I'm in the UK), but you could buy a reliable entry-level laptop AND a self-assembled desktop with a top-range graphics card for the same price. Unless you happen to enjoy playing Mass Effect 2 while commuting on the train, there is no real need to have mobility and top-level gaming capability on the same machine.

This is nothing more than an objective discussion. I don't understand why some people feel they must make it "personal" and "take sides" and have egos like 10-years old boys on a playground. Why don't people focus less on egoistical exaggerations and more on concrete FACTS.

AMD and nVIDIA are both taking aim at the mobile market.  The first of AMD's "Fusion" APUs are for mobile devices, and we will be seeing the results in less than a month.  Intel's Atom in particular, for Netbooks, is under the crosshairs.  (That was three months ago, and the Netbook / Nettop versions were a month late to market.  AMD's Fab partners had difficulties moving to a next level below the 40 nm wafers.)

But nVIDIA, with ION, is aiming a little lower at first, at Smartphones and Slates / Tablets.  However, as I added to a shader performance ranking reference article in the ME2 Tech forum last week, the court cases they had filed on one another (Intel vs. nVIDIA were due to come up in three weeks, about the time we'll see the Fusion Netbooks), and they asked for the date to be continued into the future while they reopen negotiations.

The current speculation in the computer press is that Intel is very wary of losing its almost 100% share of Netbook sales, and may want ION to replace its current chipset video at a competitive price.  Fusion is certain to DESTROY the current Atom Chipset video chip clear across the board, but ION can match the Netbook graphics version in several ares, not including game playing.

Intel also has a huge lead in Notebooks / Laptops over AMD (nVIDIA isn't allowed to produce chipsets for newer Intel processors, which what the suit was about), and the public hasn't been that interested in good graphics on their mobile computers, or Intel wouldn't have such a large part of that market.  But if they can get much better graphics and equal performance, at a lower price, which is what Fusion promises, it seems, that could change.

What nVIDIA needs now is a MS Windows that runs on Fermi as a CPU as well as a GPU (it seems that they are putting all of their eggs into an "ARM" basket, after all).

Back to topic:

For those with entry-level laptops and Intel graphics cards, apparently there is a way to "cheat" so that you can play Mass Effect 1/2. You could try install a modded driver:

http://www.mediafire.../?cuy2tjmzjbe#1

I've not tested this yet. But installing the modded driver won't work if you have a custom-built driver. You could try to install a generic driver from the Intel site first to replace your custom-built driver, and then install the modded driver, but there is a risk that this could mess up your entire graphics system.

You could also give this program a try:

http://www.filetrans...ad.php?id=63051

3D Analyze makes it possible to "force" the computer to run the game at an even lower level than the stated minimum, and "fool" your computer into thinking that it has got a nVIDIA or ATI graphics card. I've tested this and it does not work, but I've yet to explore all the potentially possible settings.

Most of the video docking stations are merely USB, and no better than IGP capability due to limited bandwidth.  There has been one, for $750, that has some promise, and isn't USB, but is way too expensive to be a practical choice.

Yes it is very expensive, but the price could come down in the future.

Zero latency, 2000Mb/sec, Faster than USB and Firewire

Based on new PCI Express® technology, ExpressBox1 provides a zero
latency connectivity solution with a theoretical maximum throughput of
2000Mb/sec (or 250 MB/sec) each direction... That's 2.5 times faster
than Firewire 800 and 4.1 times the speed of USB 2.0!

No longer have the sleeve, but I seem to remember that it stated the game requires Shader model 3.0 support.

You'll have to fool the system if your gpu doesn't support it.

I'm having exactly the same problem, I've installed the latest path ( 1.2 ) and Bring down the sky and it still won't work, I've tried running it as an admin and it comparability mode (xp service pack 2 as well as vista) but when i click play the game crashes and closes.
My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ61 and my operating system is Windows 7.

I just tried to install Mass Effect 1 on my laptop. It's Intel i-5-460M with a 1GB ATI Radeon graphics card. Whenever I hit start on the menu when it comes up, nothing happens.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

You need your own personal post with your own problem report all filled in. Refer to the sticky "How to Report" and follow that.

Since M3 was so crappy I installed M1 again. The Mass Effect Configuration Utility tells me that 1680 x 1050 widescreen (16:10) is possible, but ingame it says that the only thing I can use is 1280 x 960 (16:9) and I don't really want to look at everybodys face three times the width. Anyone has a solution for this?

Set it in the config utility and make sure you save settings when/before leaving.

I did that, but when I enter the game I get a 640 x 480 resolution. So I'm currently playing in a lower res, but to be quite honest. It's almost better than M3, because here in M1 you can see the tongues on people when they talk and no black void as in M3. :)
