Probably means nothing. When it comes to Bioware they are a cash cow. I doubt EA would cut Bioware at all in the development area. Reading the article, looks like EA canceled the development for lot of games in the pipeline, and I highly doubt any of those were EAs. Now the Mythic side of Bioware might see some cuts though.

Well DAO is a single player game released already with the toolsets. Considering it is in the player's power now for adding content, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

It could mean we might never see an "official" sequel, but that doesn't mean we wont have plenty of fun things to enjoy that are community made.

I would be more concerned about what this means for Mass Effect 2, whose website seems to be mysteriously broken atm.

I doubt that Bioware would be closed down along with the big project ME2 which is only a few months a way.

Also posted that the upcoming projects in development will be effectively cut in half, and over a dozen upcoming releases were cancellled....but they didnt specify any titles that were scrapped.

EA releases dozens of games a year, I wouldn't be worried at all about Bioware.

EA didn't put a gazillion dollars into a new franchise IP to chop it off just as the first release came out to universal acclaim.

Plus the next two releases look like licenses to print money: ME2 and TOR.

You are correct on ME2, but TOR is Published and owned by LucasArts (developed by Bioware of course).   Even though EA is the parent of Bioware, I'm pretty sure LucasArts will be getting most of the money from TOR.

Funny thing is, the company might turn around if you fire and replace a manager, not fire and replace 17% employees and keep the same fail management.

GG EA just get rid of your dumb to earth CEO. They should have released Dragon Age when PC version was ready, let the PC community work on various of contents while waiting for porting to console is ready, release the console with all the expended PC content incorporated, instead now the console player are feeling ripped off with a vanilla game that could be so much more.

And look at their fail strategy with Sims 3 & 4, lol a 5 year old lemon stand owner could make better business decisions.

ah ya ...your right there.

Lucas Arts.

Maybe that will be Bioware's saving grace as well.....

not have to rely on EA for it;s survival in these times.

lol ya Sims 3..hehe...good game...but too bad you have to cash buy every piece of furniture, etc.....it's lame.
..lol....but maybe game companies HAVE to seacrh for new revenue systems in this day and age......seems like thier testing the waters with every game releease lately.........

piracy bigger tahn we thought maybe? ....just plain greed ? ...... exploiting the unknown of new marketing territory ?dunno.

tough times.

I feel sorry for those given the boot...but EA is pretty much "Megaslime Corperation". Maybe they should cut some of the 89 gazillion EA Sports titles they churn out every year.

/snaps out of it

Of course the "frat boy" too cool to play anything but sports game market isn't terribly bright and will buy the same game dutifully every year.

Well have you had a look around at EA games lately? The make a lot of crap games!!! Look at Battle Field 1943 for PS3 its been out what 4 months now and the voice chat still doesn't work? And also EA likes to rob people blind, just look at Warden Keep 45 minutes worth of content for $7. I never felt so violated in my life!!! I will not buy another single piece of DLC for this game!!!!

If you think EA is bad, you should read what the CEO of Activision has on his mind:

EA fails because they don't know what gamers like and are in it for the money. If only developers could be publishers at the same time....

Ya...Im glad I never got into guitar hero.....

It seemed kinda fishy to have to shell out for the game, each and every new song, not to mention the price of the controllers/instruments.....

...lol...I love his quote of: “if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further.”

that's priceless for a CEO.....

thought the industry might have learned after the economy crash and bailouts.....but I guess CEO greed will never die.

Like Cryptic?  Then you have people complaining about the dev's not knowing how to run a company, or creating a game that they like, but other gamers don't.  Bottom line, ya can't win for losing.

I'd say the losses and layoffs have much more to do with the economy then with any decisions their CEO or BoD have made.  Almost every company is showing losses.  Since EA is an entertainment company, and entertainment is one of the first things people cut out when cash is thin....well, no surprises here.

EA's financial statements do not bode well. On the upside is that PC games account for 18% of revenue; the input costs are lower, so hopefully that means the PC division is slightly more profitable But it includes ports and crappy shovelware games.

The statement from EA indicates that they're going to focus on AAA titles whose profitability is in line with the Sims and their Hasbro titles (those are video games of board games, people - defnitionally crap) and recurring titles like Madden (although the division that develops Madden saw a good number of layoffs as well) and digital content.

EA could kill the DA franchise and Bioware - it could view its investments as sunk costs and reconfigure to rely on casual Facebook games. EA did just buy playfish, which is responsible for all sorts of nonsense casual games.

I hope that DA:O sold well enough to justify the longer development cycle and higher costs of making quality RPG's. If it was successful, I'm fairly certain we won't have to wait more than a year or two for a sequel. I imagine, though, they'll be pushing DLC very very hard in the meantime.

Also note that the period of analysis ended on Sept 30; these numbers do not reflect any subsequent releases such as DA:O.

Agreed.

It's not like EA didn't see this coming. Such things don't come as a surprise.

Do you really think EA would've put that much money into DA:O's marketing if they wanted to cut Bioware or Dragon Age off?

Doubt this will have any effect on Bioware. Just means  EA will be cutting back on alot of the crap games. The giant that is EA is in  no real danger.

You don't seem to understand the purpose of QA, in an RPG this big it takes months to properly QA a game. Even then they still miss things.

I like how a company is like "bleh i lost this much money" when it's more like "projected sales are this much lesst his year. time to fire people to cut potential costs"
