I'm confused as to how exactly "EA killed DA:O."

I think EA's biggest issue is holding the licenses for there Sports and Racing games. There forking out alot of money to hang onto them licenses and other key franchise licenses.

Most of EA's dept was not operating dept or cost to make the games. But outright buying companys and paying for licenses.

At the end of the day I think we are going to see a very slim EA that is heavy focused on afew key franchises and thats about it. No more of this pumping out crappy Harry Potter games or games based on hit movies. Thats ultimately what is giving EA a bad name and costing them out the arse at the end of the day.

As the economy changes and us players stop putting up with crap games. We are going to see the gaming market change alot over the next 10 years. At some point these publishers and companys are going to have to stand up and realize that we as gamers demand a certain level of quality to our games. Atleast Bioware sticks with a consistent level of quality to there games and its generally above and beyound the rest of the companys out there.

Well.. A lot of very good people and hard workers lost their jobs in EA's decision here. Rather than tighten up and rework things into a business model where they take care of PEOPLE, they dumped a ton of them on a market that has very little oppertunity at the moment; and they did it in the name of profit.

Further, what they have really done, is dump a ton of people out onto the taxpayers, since all of these folks are going to need help from unemployment, placement services, food stamps, health coverage etc. So EA dumps all these people to make a buck, while sticking those employees with a bad situation, and the taxpayers with a greater burden.

Companies that are doing this right now are the most evil soul-less demons in existance. They had the chance to run lower profits while retooling thier business, while keeping their employees on. Keeping them gainfully employed, keeping them paying taxes and feeding their families. Instead? They contribute to the flow of the recession.

It sickens me.

I think EA has been replaced by Activision Blizzard as the gaming industry's slimiest corporate goonsquad. EA has made some inroads to boosting the quality of their games just in the last 3 years. I think Layoffs/downsizing is always necessary when the economy's in the pooper, but I feed bad for the poor guys who lost their job. Here's hoping that EA can turn it around and that Activision Blizzard can eat **** for the next 10 years.

That's so naive. EA is a business, not a charity. If there are too many people clinging to a life raft causing it to sink, you cut them loose before everyone is lost. If you're smart, you retain the most talented and likely to survive crew members (i.e. Bioware).

There seems to be a lot of hopeful speculation here. This is all going to be about Return on Investment. If DAO sells enough to make future DLC a profitable venture, the current DAO project team should survive. However, they will be looking at discontinuing development for certain products and don't be surprised to see some of them hit the chopping block. Perhaps I won't see a sequel to Mirror's Edge, which I thought was great.

I agree that the Games industry does not need quite so many sports games. I was surprised to see that there were TWO 2K10 Hockey franchises released on the same day.

Keep spending your hard-earned cash on Bioware and EA will keep the Bioware franchises alive.

EA is just the publisher of the game and if they don't want to continue investing into the Dragon Age series I'm sure Bioware can find someone who does.

Bioware is a division of EA and has been since EA bought Bioware. It can't just do whatever it wants.

Actually it can Bioware retains majority shares.

Wrong. "Video game maker Electronic Arts today announced it has
reached a financial agreement. with Elevation Partners to purchase VG Holding
Corp., the firm that owns Pandemic Studios and BioWare Corp. 10/11/2007 "

Maybe EA is just trying to protect their investors (which include thousands of normal money-market investors like myself) by cutting costs beause they cannot afford to pay for the proposed House Health Care legislation for everyone they currently employ...

What kind of peterbs me is the bumper-sticker mentality blaming the eeevil coorporations for everything.

So this means that if DA:O is successful we shall have more DA:O related goodness then?

Seeing how they have said to be concentrating on proven IP, I forsee the the next title as Expansion Age: Sequels.

EA didn't put a gazillion dollars into a new franchise IP to chop it off just as the first release came out to universal acclaim.

Plus the next two releases look like licenses to print money: ME2 and TOR.

You are correct on ME2, but TOR is Published and owned by LucasArts (developed by Bioware of course).   Even though EA is the parent of Bioware, I'm pretty sure LucasArts will be getting most of the money from TOR.

umm now they wont.  bw will be making the game, lucasarts' only worth is the owning of the sw license.  they will be paid but saying they will get the most is absurd.  BW>LA

I feel sorry for those given the boot...but EA is pretty much "Megaslime Corperation". Maybe they should cut some of the 89 gazillion EA Sports titles they churn out every year.

/snaps out of it

Of course the "frat boy" too cool to play anything but sports game market isn't terribly bright and will buy the same game dutifully every year.

If you are going to make fun of folks like me that love their Madden and NBA Live - spell Corporation correctly please.Image IPB

i'd be ecstatic if EA went belly-up. you'd never believe the company they used to be (http://en.wikipedia....of_the_Ancients). indie developers will always be out there and the gaming community is far better off without the Megacracies and their brigades of attorneys.

In the day EA used to be a great company--MULE, Seven Cities of Gold, etc. My theory is that the sports games killed any creativity they once had.

Oh, as far as the cuts go, I'm guessing followups to Spore are going to be the first to go! Talk about a game that disappointed....

He means OSI (Origin Systems, Inc). The developers of the Ultima series, and Ultima Online (The point when EA took it over the game and the company and ruined them both).

Yeah, it would be much better if a "Video Game" Czar was appointed to determine content and protect us from political correctness and the evils of coorporationism ant capitalism.  Let's see if I can suggest some things for the VG Czar now - Dwarf Caste system has to go.  Hindi may be offended.  The monotheistic Maker religion not politically correct.  need something that celebrates the diversity of all the gods.  The elven underlass has to go.  May open up some sensitivities in our populous.

Yes all big corporations are evil. Drink the Koolaide....

Nope.  EA fully bought the holding company that fully owned both Bioware and Pandemic.

If we compare EA and bioware to food chains. Than Bioware runs fantastic 5 star resturants while EA is McDonalds.

So i ask you, is the thought of McDonalds owning a great quality resturant chain abit wrong? I sure do think so.

I was considering the purchase of MW2.

I will be making a special effort to NOT buy ANY Activision product in the future.

Found this link on the TOR forum.  Given the glowing remarks that the EA executive has for Bioware in general, and for DA:O, Mass Effect 2, and TOR, I doubt we have anything to be concerned about.

Regarding ME 2: "We expect this one to be rewarded with very high quality scores and benefit from built-in audience appeal.”

Regarding Bioware as a whole: “We couldn’t be happier with the vision and commitment to quality at our BioWare Studio. They are simply best in class.”

Not exactly the type of remarks you make about a business line you are planning to amputate.  The whole article is here:

The article essentially said they were going to kill off games that aren't doing well. That probably means bad things for, say, warhammer online. The article also said they were focusing on high profit margin games, which is stuff like mass effect, dragon age, etc. Essentially, they're focusing on titles they know will sell well.

Yeah, I can't imagine Warhammer being around much longer.  Althugh I suppose they could always bid it out to see if anyone else might want to take a crack at it.

...or they could make it f2p and try to go rmt with Warhammer.
