We heard a lot about change in 2008, didn't work out so well for us in the states...

Please just don't change the combat. I'm fine playing as Hawke.

I'm ambivalent. While I'm glad DA2 is not focused on the Blight, I still feel like my Warden's story isn't over yet. I wanted at least one more expansion to bring me some closure with the story, and Awakenings did not do that for me.

I'm surprised they are changing the game formula...that has me intrigued.

The scrapping of Origin stories and forced-to-play-human feature is just like the ****ing lore retcons I suffered when playing the Warcraft series (Through Warcraft:Orcs and Humans to World of Warcraft).

This does not bold well, i want a 'Return to the Roots' which was stated not a "Return to the Roots... THEN BACK TO PRESENT"

I am with Jestina on this one. If its anime, I will never ever be buying a Bioware product again. The spiritual successor of Baldur`s Gate being turned into a dumbed down pokemon game, is not something to be excited about.

There's nothing inherently wrong with an anime art style.  It's just not Dragon Age.

It's like they've gone from a huge open LOTR inspired game with tons of choices and customization to an anime-fantasy RPG.  Hell, the "Key Features" bit sounds exactly like something I'd say summing up some big JRPG.

I don't understand Bioware's thought process here.  Maybe it's some sort of delayed April Fools Joke.

The marketing right now is vague (as is all marketing) and it's hard to draw any conclusions based on what has been released so far. The only real thing we know in any concrete way is that we won't have options for race. We are not playing "our" character. We are playing Hawke the human. Just as we did Shepherd the space marine.

And that sucks. Truly sucks.

DA was harped as the "spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate. That means certain things to me that DA:O (mostly) delivered on. Mainly: a tactical combat system, detailed stats and loot, a complex storyline that I can shape and mold by my actions and a lot of freedom in choosing who my character is what characteristics define him/her, etc. So far the marketing has chopped off that last bit significantly since (and specially in the DA universe) race colors so much of how the player interacts with and is affected by the world.

Hell, before today one of the things I had assumed to be a safe bet was that we'd get MORE race choices to choose from (Q'nari anyone?) in a sequel of this game, not less. Not just one!

The other aspects of a Baldur's Gate "spiritual successor" have not been touched (yet), only time will tell as to how those aspects fare, but I'm not as hopeful as I once was.

So although change can often times be good, and fear of all change is a silly attitude to have, change that does not bring with it something interesting to play (change for the sake of change), or change the game so much that it's not what the fans signed up for in the first place, is not something I would be terribly happy about.

Undoubtedly the number 1 complain of console gamers for DA played a role in this decision: No voice over for the main character.

So I'm guessing we will be seeing a fully voiced over character coming in DA2, and I'm sure that will make a lot of people happy. Not me though. Compare the length of BG2 to Dragon Age. Now compare the length of Dragon Age to Mass Effect. Expect a 15-30 hour game tops, and not the epic game that DA:O is.

As for the art so far. As long as the silly anime style art doesn't worm it's way into the game engine I don't care. I don't want to see androgynous 12 year olds with spiky hair and 20 foot swords. And I really don't think I will.

It seems that Bioware's marketing is aimed more and more at casual gamers. They lure in the longtime gamers with stuff like ME and DA...then completely change the format to something that's more aimed at Wii players.

This isn't a matter of change. This is a matter of cutting out EVERYTHING which made Dragon Age: Origins great and then replacing it all with spare parts from Mass Effect.

Ohh there is ALOT wrong with anime. Every single male character looks either gay, or like a transvestite. And everyone has eyes about 3 times as large as their mouths.

Mass Effect is a good game with it's own genre, but this is a total dissapointed for Dragon Age, I only have a slight hope DA2 will be a good game, maybe we'll see

This. This 100%

The changes remind me so much of Mass Effect. Nothing against ME, really, but I don't want to play a fantasy version of it....Image IPB

Well if the art style is any clue on the game...i'm ready to vomit. That looks too anime.

THREE IMAGES, GUYS.  Three.  And we're already vomiting.  Go us :D

If the art style based off of three images is enough to make you not want to buy the game, fine.  If you're so attached to your Warden that every game you play in the DA IP has to be about that one particular character with those particular NPC love interests and you absolutely cannot have it any other way, fine.  Guess what?  You're not getting it.

Personally, so long as the game's graphics are decent and the visual style doesn't completely break all rules of sense and physics (a la Final Fantasy), I'm cool with it.  I think the game's going to be awesome.  BioWare has yet to let me down, and I've got faith in them.

Well the game could be good, but I definetly can't play Dragon Age: Origins with the same enthusiasm anymore.

I'll see what happens with more details. At the moment I am neutral, but about the only thing that could make me disappointed is if they canonize some of the choices in Origins, and Awakening for that matter.

I'm so excited, and I can barely hide it :wizard:

I don't mind that we don't get the original Warden, not even that we won't be able to choose the race for Hawke. I might mind a bit if we wouldn't be able to choose gender (but alas, we can, at least I think it's confirmed somewhere... probably).

All I want is a good story and I know that Bioware will give me the chance to enjoy one :D

I'm happy we're done with the warden. There was really no happy ending for her. I'm also sick of the Blight. I've played through origins enough.

I'm also happy the PC is voiced. I'm happy the game might be shorter, but spans more time - a whole ten years - think of all the fanfic spawned from that. Heh.

I agree with the OP. Most of the DAO community will not take it well though, they're way too attached. I expect a reaction like this

Its way too early to be drawing conclusions, but so far it sounds like a Fable-type game, don't know if I want that.

This, more or less.  I loved my PC, but you know how that story has to end.  I suppose they didn't have to take it to her Calling, but I'm up for a change of pace.

This I'm not so sure about.  I like an unvoiced PC, but can live with VO.  As for a shorter game, nah.  I like them LONG.  DAO's length was awesome.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The art so far is actually fairly reminiscent of the concept art from the first game, IMO (right down to the white haired mage). So I don't assume the game will be THAT different. (and I can't imagine they went through the trouble of building the new engine and massive toolset only to scrap it after a single game).

I was edgy about Awakening when I found out most of the characters wouldn't return, but I loved the new characters once I played that. I think I prefer Nathaniel and Anders to some of the original game companions, actually.

So, you know, I'll hold back from freaking out until I see it.

(and I really am OK with not following my Warden any further. I mean, they're the Warden Commander and the blight is over. What, I want an 80 hour game that's basically playing Duncan's role from the origin stories? How many people can you recruit before it gets old?)
