Not to open a can of rabid worms, but can any of the developers give a "Yeah" or "Nay"?  It's probably a bit of a deal-maker/breaker for some of us, especially after Mass Effect 2!

Why not? ;)

Deal-maker/breaker all because of romance options? I don't know what's more sad, that some people would let the lack of a same-sex romance option ruin what would be an otherwise amazing game, or the fact that some people care about it that much to begin with.

I wouldn't be surprised if BioWare just stops adding love interests to their games at some point. Frankly, I wouldn't blame 'em.

Yeah, that would be smart; "You appreciate the love interest system and our writing so much that it has become one of the most important parts of the rpg experience for you?  Well we've got to put a stop to that!"

It would be the same if someone removed an important character from a movie, tv show, or book series you loved - your enjoyment would be greatly influenced.

They can be when 40% of your market share is now female and of those a good 60% are either bi or gay/lesbian.

We want story, romance and action. The days of putting a sword in a adolescent males hand and say kill everything in your path are over.

The lack of a same sex romance wouldn't stop me from buying the game, but it's nice to have the option. I'm a woman who prefers playing male characters, but also likes men, so I enjoy playing gay males the most (I will give every romance a try, though. Well, except for Jacob in ME2...just couldn't warm to him at all).

oi come on people read more than one post in the thread.

Let's look at it a different way. Say you played a game... Mr. Bob's Zombie Apocalypse. MBZA had a featured that you thought was really awesome and new and different. It really impressed you that squishysoft would actually go and do something that had never been done in the Zombie Game genre.
Then, a few years later squishy puts out another game, Death Bots of Death. but in DBD they made that awesome feature even better! There was more of it and it added some parts that MBZA didn't have. Even better! yay!

A couple of years later Mr. Bob's Zombie Apocalypse 2 comes out. You're super excited and you run out to get it only to discover they took out everything that had anything to do with that awesome feature and even tried to claim that awesome feature never existed you just misunderstood. Sucks right. Confusing right?
So you call up the squishysoft CEO and ask him, "what the heck dude?" he says "Oh yeah sorry about that we just decided to go a different direction. Don't worry though the supersawesome feature will toooootally still be in other games. It's cool."
You begrudgingly accept this because you really like squishysoft.
A few months later they announce Death Bots of Death 2: EVENMOREDEATH! and you get psyched and you start reading all the little teaser info on the website. But then... you start to notice something... the stuff they're saying about the changes they made sounds a whole lot like what they said about MBZA2 when people asked why they took out the awesome feature...

Would you *seriously* not be a little worried that an aspect of the games you loved might be taken out YET AGAIN?

TL:DR version - it's not about the option it's about making promises to the fans.

This (gay) female doesn't care about romances, except on the principle that if the hetero crowd is inevitably catered to, same-sex content should be in, too. But I'd much rather see strong friendship paths and platonic bonding. That sadly is always given short thrift when "romances" exist and take all the attention.

So... did Game Informer just confirm romances or is that a stretch...?

"Over the course of the game's 10-year timeline, players' actions and choices will determine Hawke's history, relationships, and regrets..."

No. I can't be a dwarf. So there will be no dwarf-gay-sex-scene. Not a single ******.

I'm stunned.

I personally love the same sex and opposite sex relationships. It makes the game fun trying to see who you can romance and who you can't. It makes replaying the game even sweeter because you can have a new romance every time! The twisting plots of a love triangle... YUMMY!!!!

I truly hope so. Considering that the old writer team is back writing on this one, and the inclusion of LGBT themes within DA, I have a positive outlook. Mostly hope, but a positive outlook.

I thought they did this well in DA.  I hope they continue the friendship paths.  It should not be as difficult to avoid having a romance than it presently is.

Romances in Bioware games can be fun diversions, and I see no reason why they should not cater to all sexual persuasions. It bothers me is that VG makers seems to have less problems with lesbian (sorry, "monogendered') romances than affectionate gay males. I just hope that the romance options become a little more subtle than the overt sighing of Mass Effect 1, or the Baldur's Gate companion cat fights that come out of nowhere. Bioware might as well make their opening lines be "So, you want to get busy, or what?"

I heard a rumor (no I am not going to reveal from whom) that Bioware is under considerable pressure to stop the homosexual romances and that is why they went away from it in the ME franchise.  Hopefully that is not the case.

Unsourced rumors are useless and only lead to drama.

Sorry for bringing it up then.  I will go delete my post.  I just do not want to get anybody in trouble.

Poor Zev

But yeah if they do do another M/M romance it should not be the same as the last one.

I agree that if any romance options are available (and I do hope that's the case, personally), then all of them should be.  Limiting romances to heterosexual-only in DA2 would be a bad, bad idea and would definitely send the wrong message.

If I could submit a wish list to the writers and developers regarding this point, it would be the following:

1) Remove the achievements related to romance plot points (i.e. no "First Knight"-like achievement in DA2).  That way the "completist" players who don't like romancing NPCs in their role-play don't complain that they have to participate in romances just to unlock all the achievements.

2) Have some "exclusively gay" characters, just like M and A were exclusively hetero (without mods) in the original.  Giving the same number of partner-options to players who choose to exclusively create gay characters (whether male or female) would provide more re-playability.  This would have to go hand-in-hand with (1), since there are people who never play gay characters (for a variety of reasons that I'm avoiding like the plague so I don't start a back draft...).

I know (2) is a pipe dream, but it would be nice to have a female NPC companion who wouldn't touch a male PC with a ten foot pole but will flirt openly with a female PC, and vice versa.  Bi characters are cool too, but with the restriction of race in DA2 to human M/F, I would think they could afford to develop 6 romance-able characters instead of 4 considering the simplification of dialog and cutscene development inherent in the "human only" / one background decision that they've already announced.

Just my 2 cents... Image IPB

We haven't confirmed the existence of any party members yet, never mind the existence of romances or what sorts of romances they might potentially consist of. Appreciate the enthusiasm, but you're getting a little ahead of the information curve, here. :)

if you DO do romances..and DO do same-sex romances..

don't be idiotic and make everyone ****ing bi-sexual.  it doesn't work like that in the real world...it shouldn't in a video game.

Please review my extremely detailed previous post about how "everyone is romancable" is not the same as "everyone is bisexual."
I worked very hard on that post.

One minor point that deserves special mentioning though is:
Thedas is not the real world. Therefore "that's not how the real world works" doesn't really apply. There are no published psycholocial studies of the sexualities of Thedas. Nor is there any census information providing statistical percentages of various sexualities.

Of course there's also the fact that if you go by the Kinsey Scale that's exactly how the real world works.
100% straight is just as uncommon as 100% gay.

Why not have on option of two romances at one time? :o
