So, notable differences thus far are the character designs.  They're a lot more fantastical, with flowing capes, sharp edges and much less detailed. (The box art image in particular reminds me of the TOR visual style)  All the characters shown thusfar and clad in black, with a bit of fur which is reminiscent of some of the mage robe designs.

The new designs feel very anime esque, while the original DA:O designs were very reminiscent of LOTR.  The old styles had an element of practicality to them even if they also were absurdly detailed. (Most of them aren't anywhere near as interesting in the final game)

So, what do you guys think?

I actually think its cool. It's more comic book-y and less LotR ripoff-y. Hopefully they have less stupid looking mage hats. =P

Hopefully Darkspawn won't look like orks anymore.

Also, your post looks like you're ****ing "It looks more fancy and less detailed." and cel shading fear. Im not sure if that's what you're getting at, but it certainly reads like it.

I think the concept art looks hella cool. Looks like this guy's stuff.

Pokemon? Seriously? That's the show you think of when you think of anime? Christ, get a clue.

Anime is good, but not in this setting, I hope for "real" (aspect ration of body, weapons, buildings, etc) looking chars with high high detail

I appreciate it in the art, makes it look cool in my opinion. The outfit designs are cool as anything. It'll only bug me if that stylized art direction carries over to gameplay like TOR.

I'm not against simpler, more stylyzed visuals.  I am against my "Dark and gritty dark fantasy" game going from a somewhat realistic visual style to the absolute opposite direction of impractical spikes protruding off of every face of armour.

I would like to see more of the new style, particularly the environments, but I'm really not impressed thusfar.  They've traded one generic style for another.  Honestly, DA2 feels like an entirely different series at this point and maybe I should just treat it as such.

It is more comic'y and I agree that I prefer the old concept art style. Anime/comic book/whatever you want to call it does have it's pros though and this is definitely not so far into the realm of anime that I can't still enjoy it.

I can take my concept art in liquid or pill form, despite a preference. If they pull an anime on the in-game graphics I'll be mad.

Considering the game is set in a different country, it makes perfect sense for armour to look different. They can explain the "impractical spikes" as the style of the region. The Free Marches are meant to be somewhat Germanic, and the Teutonic Knights had evil-looking armour.

As long as the faces don't look Animeish (ridiculous hair, massive eyes and generally being Androgynous), I'm fine.

It does look anime to me.

If they have twelve year old bunny girls wearing barely anything, then that will definitely give it away. :D

Gill: when I think about anime, I think about every single male character in them looking either like a gay male, or a transvestite. That is, of course, in the cases where you can actually make out what gender the character actually is supposed to be. I also think about characters that have eyes that are 3-4 times as big as their mouths.Personally I don`t think its suited for Dragon Age.

Oversized weapons and characters wearing the most outrageous stuff...that's not even suitable for combat.

I'm thinking Miranda from ME2 now.

QFT

Although it is just an opinion, I'm not big on the anime style.  I liked DA:O style.

Meh. Women in heels are hot, so I'm fine with that. Just no massive eyes, stupid hair, androgynous characters and no weapons as big as five brick ****houses.

It sounds more like you're talking about JRPGs, but whatever. Anime is an enormous entity that corporates innumerable artists all with their own art styles. Some will have styles of the type you describe, others will not.

For example, I would say Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop is not only manly but also badass.

I, for one, am looking forward to the inevitable Dragon Age 2 Doujinshi. ^____^

I might actually buy Dragon Age 2. I now have a computer that isn't complete crap, which is the only reason I didn't buy Dragon Age.

DA:O has oversized weapons already so it's not exactly something new. Nor something causing many complaints by the looks of it.

In any case, concept art depends a lot on the drawing style of the artist behind it. There's probably no point in trying to read too much into it until the official trailer gets launched and hopefully shows some actual game graphics.

It is still just concept art once they show some screen shots of footage then i can decide if it like it more.

Doesn't really look like the first image at all,  instead it looks like some of the concept art for mass
effect 2. Hopefully they show what it looks like soon. I don't think
i could decide on the art style based on 2 images that are not
similar to each other at all.

If the art style is less realistic than DA:O (aka cartoonish), I'd.... well, you know.

Don't go the direction of SWTOR please!! What a mess...

I don't like this. It smells like TOR-style "stylised reality" to me. I liked DA:O's semi-realistic art style, not this apparent Japanese/Guild Wars/larger and pointier than life look.

My initial excitement over DA2's announcement is waning. This new art style is my only concern, I'm fine with everything else, but it's big enough to effect my opinion of the game.

I'll keep an open mind though, prove me wrong Bioware!

Edit: as for this anime-bashing, please view this image:

Not exactly Sailor Moon, is it?

This new conceptart of the mage-lady is from Matt Rhodes, and I am pretty sure that this is not the general direction the visual design of the game is taking, but simply his unique style. Check out his gallery on dA ---> CLICK It's just his choice of coloring and shading, and probably not the new visual design of DA2.

Plus isn't it a bit early to judge the art design just yet? Come on, we only have two pictures to go with, don't we? No armordesigns, no environmental designs, no characterdesigns. Absolutely nothing. Just two pictures who are very far apart from each other in their overall style.
