Other than the recycling, I thought the environments for Dragon Age 2 where an improvement. They were fleshed out and bigger/grander looking. The character models looked basically the same in my opinion, maybe with a bit more details on hair and facials, which is good. I think the reason people are saying the art of the game feels anime-like is because of the combat, it's way over the top and flashy, especially when compared to Dragon Age Origins, not to mention the swarms of fodder from all directions. I liked the art style of Origins better because it felt more realistic and gritty, but I enjoyed the details put into the new style.

^ Very disingenuous. Have you see the picture of the Blurry Elf and the guy with the hair that looks like a helmet?

I'm talking more about the individual characters, not the cookie-cutter nameless npcs that are oblivious to massive street killings.

I know this may sound stupid, but Origins had a down-to-earth style in its art that made you feel like you were visiting a place that could be real.

2 doesn't have that feeling at all, it feels too stylized to ever be real and too cartoony to be the mature fantasy RPG that it should be since it's related to Origins (...sorta).

The art style is something I absolutely hate (I'm including the over-the-top combat in the art style), and it's probably the only thing I genuinely hate about the game (many other things simple disappoint me).

Additionally the anime-eques influences are just abhorrent, the game already resembles jRPGs too closely in the linearity and lack of real choices, having the characters resemble the androgynous characters that you never care about doesn't help anything.

Agree, I totally hate all the new directions in the art style. They're despicable. Apparantly some huge fans of anime have moved into the art department, and that clueless Laidlaw let them get away with their corruption.

There's a wonderful glow of medieval atmosphere, and traditional, classic fantasy art in DA:O.
The atmosphere in DA:2 is, albeit better graphics, disgustingly disjointed.

They haven't ruined everything. Inside Kirkwell, for example, it's fine. Armour and arms are as good as DA:O, except for Varric's crossbow which is obviously borrowed from Dungeon Siege - It has no place in Dragon Age.
But the landscape otherwise is badly scarred by Frank Miller's 300. - FFS, just because it was cool in that movie, you thought it would be cool in DA:O's sequel too?

Redesign of races is even worse: The elves are simply ugly. There's little excuse for that, and it can't be defended by saying that they were too human in DA:O. So a slight modification would have been an improvement - that's no mandate or justification for a truly horrible and failed design. Not only are they ugly, they don't look natural, they don't look organic, the look doesn't come together. It's simply BAD design, BAD art, a stupid drawing by an ungifted twit. Those ears pointing straight back: Anyone with some knowledge of natural sciences and biology, with some notions of how ears and acuostics work, immediately sees how wrong that is.

Qunaris, in contrast to the elves, may work as an art exercise. And it may work in fantasy settings. But perhaps mostly in anime. And absolutely not in Dragon Age. The horns are ridiculous. Next time you play the game, watch the Qunari. Imagine them without those Japanese horns. They would have been awesome WITHOUT horns.

Now Fenris,.. and the new Flemeth, Image IPB - put on the heavy boot and kick the responsible dork all the way back to Square Enix!

This. The cartoony style should have no place in a dragon age game. I remember very well Bioware saying back then that DA:O it's a dark fantasy game, what hapenned to that?

I miss dirt. Everything is way too clean. It's like everything is cleaned just before you make an appearance. Even the bodies are automatically cremated and disappear slowly into the soil. About the characters... I wish some characters were untouched. The qunari were already established (all the ones I killed in DA:O didn't have those horns). Some darkspawn are gone all of a sudden. The suits of the ones that are left look like they were ironed by the Broodmother herself. The new elves look awkward to me. I really think the changes are overdone. I would be happy if they just got better resolutions and animations, though. Can't change it back, right? ;)

Edit: And I really don't like that I can't equip the crew with armor I've found. That's probably the worst change.

I actually think its cool. It's more comic book-y and less LotR ripoff-y. Hopefully they have less stupid looking mage hats. =P

It is horrible. It's comic - booky of hte very bad variety (those "edgy" comics).

The art style of DA:O was great. The concept art is a bajillion times better than DA2 stuff.
Just looking at that old Merrill concept art makes me puke....

Anime will ruin this, belive me. There is nothing lamer. Pokemon with swords.

Pokemon? Seriously? That's the show you think of when you think of anime? Christ, get a clue.

To be fair, anime doesn't have a good public image...so most poeople when you say "anime" will think "Pokemon"
