Is anyone else happy about the changes to the main character?

I know I'm the minority here, but personally I prefer a more set main character the likes of Shepard.  My personal reason being that when the character is completely supposed to be me, I feel a disconnect because it's not my world, and as a guy sitting in my computer chair, I don't care as much as say a character actually in that world does.  I like having a voice and some choice in it, but through a medium that fits in the world of the game, it just makes the experience overall better to me.

Does anyone else have a reason like this or of their own as to why they're happy about the change of pace when it comes to the main character?

I do not know enough to really have an opinion as yet. I will be interested to hear more about 'Hawke' and especially who the voice talent is going to be.

I like this specific default character because he looks alot like most of the people in my family, facial construction wise.

I'm really fine with a new PC and new story. But unless you had your Warden do the Ultimate Sacrifice and kick the bucket, just having the Warden "vanish" at the end of Awakening is a total cop out of an ending for the Origins warden.

My hope now lies with some DLC or a final ex-pack to give the Origins Warden a proper send off before getting involved with this Hawke fellow.

Im all for it, if it gives the story more depth. But I do hope that ill have even more moral choices then in DAO.

I really dont hope that it will be an action game. I love DAO and the way it plays.

i don't mind the voiced PC, the ditching of origin stories, or the DA:O warden not carrying over. i do, however, think it's really cheap that they're taking away the option to play as an elf or dwarf.

I liked it better when Dragon Age was Dragon Age and Mass Effect was Mass Effect.

People will probably getting annoyed by me copy pasting my post over 9000 times, but it's relevant to most of these conversations.

Taken from the other three VO threads:

[DA:O sidequest spoilers]

I'd prefer no voice work for Dragon Age 2 at all, voicework only limits the player's choices and style instead of making it interesting. Mass Effect has the story of Commander Shepard, he's this one single person who no matter what is a military (wo)man with a past and forced to be sent on an adventure, Dragon Age: Origins on the other hand was more of a general scope.

I've only played Human Nobles in Dragon Age, yet I felt like I played four different characters. Why? Because there isn't voice acting, who the character and what he did was entirely up to me. I made one of my human nobles a spoiled brat who's never worked a day in his life, while the other was a kind noble who assisted in everybody's
matters and was.. let's say, charming.

My character wasn't defined by the voicework, I wasn't forced to pick three choices and choose the one I liked the most, I picked the one that my character actually was. My prefered playthrough is one where I go around and tease my party members and respond sarcastically whenever possible, he's just that type of person. I felt more a bond with these characters than any of the Mass Effect characters, I genuinly cared for Alistair and Leliana's troubles and when I said to Alistair (after the Goldanna quest) that I was sorry it turned out that way - it wasn't because my character was sad, I honestly felt horrible and wished it could've went better.

While voice acting would entertain the 'mass effect crowd', I'd loathe it.

Personally, I'm seeing a lot that excites me but I'm also seeing a lot that I know is going to ****** the RPG purists right off.

I really thought they had a good story going with DAO, but not being able to play my warden and they take the other races and are forced to play this new guy, seems alot of us were hung out to dry and this guy that rises to power, who cares, I just don't care right now, I had high hopes for my warden, Morrigan and the rest of the guys and gals I knew in DAO, really big letdown, as of now I won't be buying this, will watch my friend that wanted a new character play it, I guess my money and story for EA came to a end in Dragon Age Awakening.

Seems to me like the intentions of Origins (detailed individual backgrounds for each race, differing story paths and consequences, sequel reactivity) just aren't feasible within the current state of the video game industry. It would take far too long to programme a sequel that covered the myriad different outcomes that players could experience in DA1. Consequently, they've gone with the Mass Effect model; a story focusing on one pre-determined character with a more restricted set of story paths. Speaking personally, much as I enjoyed DA1, I never felt a real connection to any of my characters- I'd rather have a well paced story thats free from the shackles of having to relate to the variable race and background of the PC.

My heart is aching. I love my Warden, and Alistair. Without him, I see no point to continue this fantasy. I will only miss him :(

I honestly prefer the greater degree of freedom given in the original DA:O. This is not to say I have anything against the ME format, I simply wish they'd kept each one distinct to its franchise.

If I play a female character, her first name is going to have to be Fisher. (donut if you get the reference)

That's pretty much exactly how I feel actually, the new design choices creating a better balance of choice, pacing, and plot is exactly what I want.  It may limit freedom in the game, but for me at least it makes the experience overall far superior.

EDIT: Though I guess this IS what people are unhappy about, that Bioware is moving more towards experience over freedom.  I'm just saying that at least to me they made the more enjoyable choice.

I'm disappointed that we probably won't get the replayability that the multiple origins of DA1 encouraged. I've never played any other single player game to over 300 hours. Not even close. But I think Bioware has earned our trust at this point. Besides, change is good. You really don't want the same game over and over again. DA is probably my favorite game of all time and after 350 hours, its starting to get a little old. I really can't see myself putting more than another 80 hours into it.

I'm not happy, but I can live with it. Does that count?
Now, personally I never had any expectation of being able to continue using my Origins character. I thought the various developer comments made it fairly clear that further DA games would tell different stories in different parts of the world and I'm surprised that anyone is surprised.
But I would have liked to play a dwarf or an elf again.

Yes. I find it hard to care about the MC when he/she has no voice.

I think they'll be able to make a better game and story overall with something more specific to work with this time around.

Yeah, the dwarven culture (minus the grindworthy deep roads quests) was one of the more interesting elements of the DA world. Hopefully we'll at least have some dwarven sidekicks to choose from, if we can't play as one. Sod the elves.
