Is anyone else happy about the changes to the main character?

Count me as one that loves the idea of a fully voiced main character. I know it is meant as an insult, but "medieval Mass Effect" is something I would love!

Well to the people saying they're unhappy about being forced to be human, that's something I can agree with.

I'm hoping for the possibility of expansions or something like that to tell it from their perspective, though I'm not really sure how that would work.

You guys talk about a central character, hell our Warden was a central character that could have made DA2 really take off, like the Master Cheif in Halo. I wanted my Warden to go on all these mass undertakings and take out all the bad in this world, I wanted to take on more evils in the world, save my kid from other dark forces, could have been a really nice story, but they give us this new guy that looks like a low life smuck and hes the new god to save us all, man Iam glad some of you out there like this and I hope you have fun with this new conan looking caveman.

And why would this new character be worse?

Dragon Age Origins will always be better than this **** they are giving us now.

Mass effect is Mass effect

and Dragon age should stay dragon age. We dont need some deep american voice for it to be good.

I find strange we are not sticking with the warden since david gaider said months ago that the natural way to do a sequel is to stick with the known characters due to the emotional investment you'bve already made.

I was talking with some other Bioware fans a few days ago, and everyone agreed that the problem with the ME conversation wheel style is that you don't have to think about the decisions. Paragon is always top right, and renegade is always bottom right. You never have to think about anything! In DA, we had to read which option we thought would have the best impact on our party members, not which option would arbitrarily raise or lower our "goodness" level. The problem with a fully voiced RPG is that it would automatically turn into a ME style conversation system, with fewer, more polarized choices.

As was stated by one of the ME2 developers, Mass Effect is a 3rd person narrative, while DA:O is a first person narrative. This means our character is our own, as oppose to us choosing between the things the pre-designed Sheppard might say.

I don't like it. Not one bit. I don't for a moment doubt that DA2 will be an outstanding game, but this is a massive departure from what the first game was. If they wanted to do a fantasy Mass Effect, that's cool, I love Mass Effect, but create a new franchise, don't bury the foundation of Dragon Age.

A great sequel takes what the first did well and improves on it. Scrapping the very core of what the first was is not making a sequel, it's a new franchise freeloading off the original's name recognition.

A game series should be more than a setting. This is more of a spin off than a sequel.

yet this is exactly what DA was imagined to be from the VERY START. Dev comments from before Origins was done and all of them since state that DA is about Thedas, not any given main character. And that they wanted to continue the franchise with looks at different nations and time periods and events in this world they had made. The series was never meant to be attached to the Warden the way ME is attached to Shepard.

And as any seasoned RPG-er can tell you once your character reaches epic levels, story and ecounters have to also rachet up to stay chalanging and eventually you are killing dragons and Pride demons every fight and it gets dull. I would rather play a totally new guy starting from level 1 on his own seperate journey in the same continuity.

Yep, THIS.  The Warden is cool, but s/he is the savior of Ferelden, not the entire big honking galaxy :P  Sorry, honey.  Personally, I love the fact that we get a clean slate.  Forget epic, decent challenges at 4E's paragon sometimes have trouble stacking up against the awesome of the PCs.  I'm excited that we get to see a new part of Thedas, with a fresh pair of eyes.

And honestly, I'm also happy the Warden more-or-less fixed the Blight.  I'd like to see more of the DA universe than ZOMG AWFUL MONSTARS.  Its politics, its intrigues...what I wouldn't give for a campaign in Antiva

I'm warming up to having the name Hawke and (possibly) having a voice actor. But I;m still really bugged about no character creation.

Well, I am happy about it. It could be really good for the gaming experience, maybe not for everyone, but for me at least.

Part of the replay value, for me, in DA:O was the character specilization. So, I for one will miss this aspect of creative diversity in game play.

I also dislike this change. Mass Effect was introduced with Shep, and it works great for that game. Being this Hawke person is basically turning DA into ME. I can understand the first character moving on, died, or whatever. But forcing us into a very restricting roll is silly. No elf or dwarf either? Even more silly.
No Multi player support either I'd guess, since everyone is this hawke. I think they could have done so much more, by allowing DA2 to have a multiplayer aspect. Instead, they seem to be leaning towards having just one Hero. I guess it can also be said they are leaning towards a DA movie like ME.

As was just stated above, you could play through each origin story, and have a totally different character and act different for each origin.  The replay value was huge in DA.
Now we are basically limited to a class or one the "choices" pregame, for our new "warden".
