The (Un)Official Concerns with Dragon Age 2 thread

Of course, mentioning the EA bugaboo is almost a surefire way to get a thread locked, so maybe that's way no one has mentioned it.
btw :that's called censorship

"Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior."
Does it mean combat mechanics are going to become more tactical, or more action-oriented? Or both?
"Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make."
This could be lame like Fable 1 & 2, yes, but there are plenty of genuinely good fantasy novels that stretch across decades. Ever read The Name of the Wind? If not, then you should, it rocks.
The only things I know for sure are that I a)like that new ogre in the screenshot on Game Informer and b)Hawke still sounds weird to me. Neither point is significant enough to form an opinion one way or the other, so I'm just going to bite my tongue until we learn something more substantive.

Maybe it's a Halo reference. Maybe we're getting vehicle combat!

fereldens are idiots and prefer to use dogs rather than cavalry. No wonder they got assraped by Orlais.
we might get griffon mounts though?

Um, Ferelden destroyed Orlais with horse mounted knights. In fact the cavalry played a pretty important part in lots of battles, including one that split the Orlais force in half and saving the entire Rebel Army.Mecha Tengu wrote...

Also, Griffons are forever gone (which I still don't entirely understand why...) and only Grey Wardens rode them.

If you read The Stolen Throne, you'd know, Ferelden has horses and uses mounted combat. However, there are no ingame, due to technical reasons. I guess it's very difficult to make horses look good, especially with riders - lot's of work for very little to gain.
Ah, I see. I'm still only on the second chapter.
Though the lack of horses was never something that bothered me. I does seem as though they could have had a few stationary at camp though, to give the impression that we were riding them to all those locations. Walking to places is so plebian.

Griffons are all extinct, so that's a no. I do wonder, though, where was the Ferelden cavalry? I mean, they are said to have stables, twice it's stated that Cailan will ride to battle, and a few other odds and ends, and yet no horses. Curious.
Devs said the horses were off-screen. They just were not essential to model and animate, so they didn't.

can I see a link where a dev said that
I really want to see their justification, or lazyness of not including horses in game

Yeah, but Griffons were domesticated mounts, dragons are, well, ****ing dragons and they kill people. Nobody has seen a griffon since the last Blight, when they all died in the final battle that ended that Blight.Mecha Tengu wrote...

After all is said in done in all of the threads that I have read so far, Bioware and/or EA was remiss in putting out the ill conceived blurb that they have. Let's face it, they couldn't even stick with Leliana's personal account in Origins, for Leliana's Song. It was totally different in every aspect. Therefore, I can't imagine that any other DLC or sequel that they produce as a Dragon Age franchise will be consistant with the former. DA2 is a prime example. I think it is shamful. But, who am I to say?
I think their choice of prerelease information was a bit... unwise. It seems to me that they very easily could have foreseen such a split base early on and chosen to release information about the game and not the changes.

Seriously. THAT IS ALL I HAVE EVER WANTED OUT OF LIFE. I mean, no matter how super dank I looked wearing some big black cloak that took an artist ten years to stitch together, I would still look like a mega loser if I walked into my Creative Writing class looking like a poor man's Skywalker from Episode 6. But heck, in a video game, I can wear my god dang cloak and have a super neat tats! Everywhere! Anywhere! I can imagine one to be on my super perfect pixel butt because it is a video game and that is okay!
I mean, I already have faith that the story will be totes awesome and the Lady Hawkes won't get neglected, since Bioware is always super neat about that, but I just want a god dang cloak. If there was a cloak, this game would be perfect. A big, long, swishy cloak that I could never get away with in real life but would strike fear into the hearts of my super mean and super pixelated foes. I could be like, watch out! I got super great tats and a +5 dex cloak of Epic Hawke! Or Mike Hawke, depending on how juvenile I am feeling that day!
I just want a cloak.
Just one.
A super neat one.
I'm going to go cry now.

1. Fast travel by map, with random enemy encounters and dreadfully long load times. Hated this in the first game. If they bring it back, I will be disappoint.
2. Watered down RPG elements.
3. Typical, smarmy, Tolkienesque high fantasy. Please, please, I beg of you oh high writers of Bioware, stay away from this influence. Fantasy has seen enough cliche wizards, silly gnomes, and gallant, sword wielding hero's. I want something real, gritty, something that reflects universal human concerns and politics. No good or evil, but shades of grey, competing factions and ideologies. Plus, if I have to contend with another dainty Wood Elf, I'm gonna puke.
Now, of course, I have no reason to fear any of the above will occur in the game. DA:O mostly avoided these things, in fact. Just thought I'd throw my preferences out there so they can be seen. Preferably at the next DA2 staff meeting.

Your first look at in-game art will come in the next issue of Game Informer. Concept art is occasionally stylized, but concept art is not the same as a model reference for in-game art. Its purpose is just the name implies, to visually demonstrate a concept. So, save judgment for then but based on what you say you prefer, I think you'll like what you see in GI.
And at some point, we'll get the art director to talk a little bit about what you can expect to see.
Hello Victor,
Is this by chance "in-game" shots? I've assumed it is and have been quite critical of it's plain, un-detailed and over all bland (imo) appearance...
http://www.gamestar....agon_age_2.html
The stylized cartoon look might very well work for SWTOR since the previous games weren't that far from it anyway and with the popular Cartoon Network show getting viewers use to that type of look.
But DA already has a core fan base and audience, of which many were drawn to it's art direction and style. Going for a less detailed cartoony style with this game (DA2) I feel is a drastic step backwards.
And the added splashed of globs and puddles of blood looks like what one might see in a 80s computer art class or air-brushed in. (i'm trying to describe the "plastic" look and feel to the images in the above link...and the others I've seen thus far)
I'd have to say that I think most people are more concerned about the game versus being "excited" about what we've seen and learned thus far...
Time will tell I guess.
I hate to be so critical and sound like a doomsayer...I'm just really surprised and taken back by the decision to go this way with the graphic style...
Regards

This will most likely be back. Dragon Age was never meant to be an open world sandbox game.

I think it's possible to make a hybrid - anything that opens up the gameplay and freedom for the player. Ahh well, I suppose I'm asking for a different type of game, aren't I?
You are right. It will probably be map time and crossed swords whenever I want to go anywhere.

I thought DA was open enough. You had to go to every location, but you decided the order the places themselves were fairly open in that you weren't roped into a set linear event (Orzammar notwithstanding).

Well, if they did this, they would either need to change the leveling system completely or just do away with it.

Some of the greatest RPGs (The Witcher, Planescape Torment to name 2) allowed even less customisation of the main character than DA2 will. This is a personal choice not a qualitative judgement.Dacen315 wrote...
No Origin/Race choice - One of the many things that made DA so great. How you were introduced to the game in different ways and how the world treated you if you chose a different race. Compare the City Elf playthrough, in where quite a bit of the people you meet have a prejudice against elves, to the Human Noble playthrough, where a lot of people treated you like a regular citizen.
Why won't they do it better? After all the DA writers are better than the ME writers.Dacen315 wrote...
The dreaded "Mass Effect Wheel" - While this worked great in Mass Effect, doesn't necessarily mean that it will work as well in Dragon Age.
