The (Un)Official Concerns with Dragon Age 2 thread

Bioware ALWAYS makes games that work. Every single game they have made worked for me. It may have not been what I want but the elements of the game(s) collaborated so well together i loved the experience anyways. The story, the gameplay, the style, and the execution have always been nothing sort of engrossing for me.
I know the game will be good. The question is will it be amazing.
I say to hold faith. The only thing Bioware ever had real shortcomings in developing; is DLC.

I hope it will be a good game, I really do. But there is quite a bit that concerns me, both known and unknown. I'm hoping this Game Informer article will clear some things up.

-Music. loved maybe 2-3 pieces from DAO but i don't remember any real epic themes. (Epic ost.1,2,3,4 return to your roots! haven't really heard anything about it...)
-Hope the overall "improvements" doesn't mean the other things we love get pushed aside, like from me1 to 2. Squad banter~DAO does it best.
-art style, VA and combat, but i'm waiting to i actually find out a tad bit about it before jumping the gun...
-classes/armor&equipment but again, have to wait to see the art style
but i am also excited about the art style! i think ray? said they we're really working on it...
also concerns in production time... its really fast! concerned with quality....

My main concerns are loss of elf and dwarf playable races. I love playing an Elf. Loss of origin stories. Little or no connection to previous games not playing as previous character. But I don't mind playing as a new character so much as losing so many other options to play as other races and such. We're getting a voiced character, but at what cost? I'd rather be the character of my choosing than having bogged down to a particular one with a voice.

My problem, even though it would be an improvement, is redesigning the combat mechanics to fit the consoles which I have.
I really hope they include more spell reactions (like fire would spread if cast on "Grease") because I thought that was really cool.

Here it is: http://kotaku.com/55...-very-different
Scroll down to the bottom of the story. This also comprises info about the game that was known right after the press release
And IckyLicks, you remind me of something. I'm really hoping (though I know its probably not going to happen) that they can somehow distinguish the console and PC versions. We all know that they do not play the same, and some things just shouldn't be the same. I'm talking about the way the GUI works, as well as the core gameplay itself. From what I've heard, console gameplay on Origins isn't really ideal, while on the PC it's perfectly fine.
I don't think PC players would have an issue with having to wait a little longer for the game to come out so BioWare can perfect it and optimize it for the PC. Though, part of me says that will just mean we're getting a console port with some GUI edits. I just want this to feel natural on the computer, and not a letdown like, say, Oblivion was. But I'm sure console players want the same thing, so, BioWare, take your time and do it right. EA needs to realize these things. A year and 4 months just isn't long enough to build a fully functional game, especially an RPG. They know it's going to sell, why rush it?

- I like my Warden. I feel personally attached to my Warden. I've gone on adventures with him, I've laughed with him, I've managed to shed a few tears with him. He's a real character to me, a living part of the setting. It took an entire game for me to become attached to him, and I want to know what becomes of him. I don't want to play as someone else that they've already decided on.
- There are several plot threads dangling loose, all of which would have made for good plots within a sequel and for all intents and purposes were ignored in favor of something completely different. Epilogues in Origins and Awakening all imply if not outright state that there is still plenty of work for your Warden to do yet. Alll of them provided clear sequel hooks that were obviously being set up for a major resolution in a sequel. This Hawke fellow is right out of left field.
- More importantly, because this hits me on a personal level, the subplot with Morrigan and her God Child, if addressed at all, will not be done in a satisfactory manner. I pursued the Romance quest with her, and was nearly catatonic at the end. It was an obvious play to leave that avenue open for a sequel, where the Warden would get a dramatic confrontation with her and another major moral choice would come into play. Any confontration with her during the course of this sequel will be meaningless without the personal motivation of the character coming into play, of which there can be none so long as it's Hawke and not the Warden. Any interaction with her coming from Hawke will be significantly cheapened.
- Overall, my concern with Dragon Age 2 is that they've slighted me on a personal level by denying me the chance to reprise my role as the Warden. I know that I'm not the only one that sees this move to be bad storytelling. The endings for Origins and Awakening seem to build up to some epic saga of the Grey Warden, have obvious (I can't stress how obvious these were) plot hooks for sequels, and have a significant amount of ambiguity in the endings to almost promise that the Warden will return. Only he doesn't.
- Gameplay changes are a mixed hat to me. I don't want a character VO because that would totally ruin immersion for me. Changes to the combat and gameplay are all ambiguous at this point, so they're whatever.

New Art style is troubling. If it's stylized (Borderlands/TOR), I just won't buy it.

We do know very little about Dragon Age 2, and ppl acting like that they would know about the whole gameplay, etc.
Let's just w8 til we get some more information. I truly belive that they just upgrading the gameplay.
Like, maybe, u wont have origin story for every kind of character, but i do belive the Hawke's story is going to be 10 times better than the DAO origins stories.
Yeah and the other 1 is: Voice acting
I suspected that many many ppl were whining for a voice for his/her PC. Now that Bioware is going to make the voice, ppl are acting like that this is the end of the world..
C'mon guys, lets have faith in Biowarem I'm sure that they"ll figure out smth epic.

I'm okay with the rest so far. After Awakening, I just don't really care what Bioware does with Dragon Age all that much.

And BallaZs, its concerns about the game. Things we know strongly influence things that could end up being concerns with the game. I'm pretty sure everyone nows that nothing is solid until we actually get solid info later this month. But until then, it's completely valid to consider what may end up being negatives on this game.

He's pretty much the latter. He escaped from Lothering to the Free Marches. He's just a regular dude. There really isn't much of a need for a Grey Warden now, though. I mean, other than being watchful. Plus, our own Grey Warden is probably dead or close to death by now. Wardens die young.BigEd420 wrote...
Maybe, just maybe. The Warden ( if he/she survived that is) is Hawke's new mentor. Or possibly Alistair, I don't know I'm just hoping something like this comes along. Do we know if Hawke is a Grey Warden? Or is he just some random jack ass who was lucky enough not to die in the first game?
I hope we can do that as well.Samb84 wrote...

But, think about it this way: How many Dwarves and Elves did you see Lothering? There was that small poor family of elves who came to Lothering to flee the Darkspawn, and then the Dwarven merchant and his son. Not really a whole lot there to work with =/
It's a shame that they weren't able to make it work from elsewhere. Like maybe from Gwaren? Surely there were some elves there, and maybe a few Dwarves. But really, we all know Dwarves are rare outside Orzammar.

I super second this.ArcanistLibram wrote...
A second concern I just thought of: If the game is supposed to take place over ten years, I would like it to take place over ten years. I don't want 6 months of things happening after Lothering burns down followed by a 9 year timeskip followed by another 6 months of things happening.

Furthermore, a Grey Warding doesn't succumb to his taint for thirty years after he does the Joining, so unless (Ethan) Hawke escapes Lothering as an infant, then even by the end of the game your Warden should still be alive and kicking.
I feel the need to reiterate that it seems as though they are purposely ignoring a perfectly good plot setup so that we can explore another part of the world with another character that, frankly, I just don't care about as much as I care about my Warden.

The only real concern i have at the moment is, that the game will be max 20 hour long.
I have to agree with this, I noticed the price too and this clued me in that something would be missing. Thus, far I'm disappointed. I just started getting into playing other origins and I was looking forward to seeing even more.
I will say, I'll be sure to never waste my time in answering another developers opinion poll again, when its obvious they are not listening anyway. Seems if I want continuation of my warden, I'll have to elude to fanfic which is what I've been doing.

So to sum up: dialogue system, could be terifying, if they try and implement the [find random tree] approach. I hated the darkspawn and blight aspects of DA; they were the least interesting by far, because the blight was just some backdrop force of nature. The demons and the fade, now that was brilliant. I want more demons, more fade, and less blight.

simply put the reasons i liked dragon age origins will not be present in this game. Rather then a classicly styled rpg which is something i loved it will simpley be another modern rpg which while entertaining wil be nothing that defines itself above any other game ive played
