DAO had much better romances.  Although I still wasn't overly impressed with the in-game endings (a little more of a good-luck romance before the final showdown would have been nice), I was happy with their epilogues.  But in all these games, the romance is so one-way.  The NPCs are all about themselves and they leave me feeling like this: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=OS_2RRQZodw

Overall, I would like to see these things in DA2 romances (some of which were already in DAO):

1.  Gradual and logical progression:  Don't tell me you love me because I cleaned your sword (no euphemism intended).  Image IPB  I thought DAO had a nice bit of romantic dialogue and led up to things nicely.  But I admit I'm greedy.  I'll take a lot more.   And they didn't just get to the romance.  You had to earn it and spend time getting to know the NPCs.  I liked that.  Let's get to know each other first.  Emphasis on the "each other."  See #2.

2.  Make the NPCs get to know me.  I would love to be chased a little.  Zevran was the closest to that, but let's face it...he was just a sexhound.  I want them to ask about me...where do I come from, how do I feel about this or that, what's made me into the person I am, do I want kids, where do I see myself in 5 years, do I like paper or plastic...Which brings me to #3:

3.  Give me people who care about what happens to me:  If my family is slaughtered, tell me how sorry you are.  If I get the crap beat out of me or I'm torn apart emotionally by some tragic event, ask me how I am.  I'm really tired of NPCs worrying about each other and expecting me to be tough enough to deal with it.  Let me be comforted, too.  Especially by my romanceable.  Let them catch me by surprise with a thoughtful gift to cheer me up, or pull me aside to ask if I'm okay.

4.  Romanceable NPCs that give me a break.  Zevran and Alistair would let you flirt around, up to a point, and you could win their favor back by giving gifts.  That was nice.  I don't like having one mistake or a little disagreement to totally end the whole affair.  And up to a certain point, you should be able to flirt with multiple people without bad consequences.

5.   In keeping with the ending line of #4, I'd like romanceable NPCs that stay true to themselves.  I think the DAO team did a good job of this with Alistair and Zevran.   Alistair wouldn't sleep with you until he really felt a connection.  Zevran would take you back after you dumped him for Alistair (though Alistair was done with you once you turned him down).  I liked the consistency of their characters.

6.  Attitudes and dialogue that change as you progress.  BG2 made me so mad when Anomen would keep saying, "What is it NOW?" after we were a couple.  DAO added the nice touch of new responses for various stages in your romance.  Thank you...don't drop the ball!

7.  A nice little scene and dialogue with just me and my romanceable NPC before the final showdown.  Yeah, I like the closure with the group.  But it only makes sense that there would be *something* more going on with you and your beloved.  ME totally failed in this.  You don't need to voice a commitment in order to show you care, but you can say *something* .  At least Kaiden *did* tell me he didn't know what he'd do without me and we did have one last night together...for what it was worth.  Alistair didn't even bother to ask me in for one last fling!  Come on, writers!  Give us a "night before the final battle dialogue" that will curl our toes and make us beg for more!!

8.  Someone(s) who pine(s) for me.  After I turned Zevran or Alistair down, I wouldn't have minded seeing a little angst from time to time.  Then, at the end, they could tell me how they still loved me (or that they'd always love me) and hoped I'd be safe.  Or it could be someone who you'd been with all along and never suspected a thing....how awesome if Sten came up at the final DAO battle and said how much he wished things had been different!  Or Bann Teagan, or Ser Perth, etc.  (No, the dog would not be a cool alternative pining love interest.  Just...ew.) Image IPB

I guess that's about it. Not much of a list or too much to ask for, is it?  LOL!  Hey, it IS all about ME, ya know. Image IPB

Agreed, I want some support from my LI - some concern for my well being, rather than silence and, after a certain point in the game, dismissal with nothing new to say. There were moments in the ME series where I would really have liked my LI to come up and offer some sympathetic words, or just joke foolishly with me to try and lighten the stress.

>>7. A nice little scene and dialogue with just me and my romanceable NPC before the final showdown<<

This as well. I was shocked that I didn't get a private moment with Leliana before the final battle at Denerim ... here we are going into something we may not all come out of, no doubt both of us could use some reassurance and maybe a final moment to spend just being with one another, (not necessarily sexually, either) but instead I got nothing ... would have really been heart breaking if my character had chosen to sacrifice herself and never got to say goodbye.

This, Thissity, THIS!

Also, include some kind of flirty, small-talk system a la the fan-mods for BG2. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but sometimes my AW just wanted to sneak up and pinch Leliana's backside or my Rogue wanted to place a dried wilds flower in Morrigan's spell book, just to see her find it.

DA:O had a good start with romances, but they could definitely use some love so to speak.

In ME2 I couldn't get past Shepard's tone to even talk to Jacob, that was a true disconcerting conversation.  :blink:I immediately backed off.  I did have one who romanced Thane and it was ok, he died.  Garrus and I are pals.  I guess there was something about Kaidan I responded too.  It very well could have been the voice and memories of Carth, the first video game love in my life.    But I actually liked Kaidan so I knew exactly what he meant when he said he wanted to see it through.

I do agree the DA romances were much better.  Though I hated and will always hate the lack of choices in the Alaistair ending.  Among other things, if he didn't go to Morrigan he still didn't come to me.  Very very not good.  One of us was going to die and I spent the night alone.

I agree with everything you want.  Well, #8 I don't really care whether or not they still love me.  When old boyfriends would call after I had moved on, I just found it awkward.  But  I wouldn't complain if it was an option.  Love options.
It would be great if they would do this.  I hope they read and deliver.

I'd like to add a point to your list

9) More critical moment during the game

I'd like to see situations where taking some decisions which are clearly at the opposite of the behaviours of your companions can prevent/break the romance

In DA:O we had only 2 moments like that. Andraste's Ashes where you risk to lose Leliana and Landsmeet when you risk to lose Alistair. (I didn't mention DR because Morrigan is lost no matter what you do.. The only difference is if she leave you before or after the final battle)

These ones are even too much because you don't only break any eventual romance but you lose the companion at all. I would like to see some moment where taking some decision can make you and your beloved to enter a crisis..buth without the companion living the party forever

Some examples?

Real evil actions like to kill Connors or to butcher the Elves should prevent/break romances from good character like Leliana or Alistair. Something like that.. Once you have collected a number of negative approvation points from a companion you shouldn't be able to romance him/her anymore, no matter how many points you can get thanks to the gifts...

I would like to see a relationship where an NPC’s interest in the character is directly correlated to the player character’s wealth and fame. This would be a non-recruitable NPC who is beautiful and in a position of moderate power (providing the player the occasional assignment).

The NPC would start off brusque and disinterested, but as our character’s fame and power grows so would the NPC’s interest (eventually growing to infatuation).

The player character could then choose to choose to summarily dismiss the NPC or succumb to his/her advances.

I think to add this type of romance would be amusing and act as a yard-stick for our own success.

My inspiration for this character is “Sanoma Tora” from “A Fighting Man of Mars” from “A Princess of Mars” series.

Well I hope we get some diversity in romances.

Human
Elf
Dwarf
maybe a desire demon
Everyone gets a race they like. I for one thought female dwarves were the sexiest race in Origins.

I don't know if there is more to say. Exactly what we want and need. We some people can think '' this is not a Sim-date game '' but this is not just a ''Hack'n slash game either''

I was looking forward to get my companions' opinions after an important event.

Like after a big quest , they comfront you in the camp without you asking them. That was nice in DAO.

About the PC's background history , I think the most involved character (besides Origins temporary companions ) was Duncan. Actually seeing your past life , saving you ( mostly ).

Maybe we ask too much maybe not. but +100 approval to n2nw

I would find it interesting if you got a buff or debuff should your love interest go down in battle. Also I like Leliana's romance because it took awhile to seduce her and gain her confident. Whereas with Morrigan I got in her the tent in the auto camp after lothering. Was not very challenging with Morrigan.

Had an idea for all the people who don't want romance in the game. Bioware can put in an option were you can toggle it on or off similar to gore. As for me I find them to be an entertaining part of the story that gives you something else to do besides killing lots of darkspawn.

All romances are already an option. If you don't want one, you don't have to pursue one. I never got why people complain about romances when they have the option to avoid them all together.

Yeah...I dont get why people are so against romances when they are completely optional. Some people act as if these these romances are ruining video games. Im not saying that every game needs romance,of course not.But its a Bioware RPG,its going to have romances.

It has been confirmed somewhat that there will be a male dwarf as a romance option. Hehe that dev's post got deleted.

Oh God, please let it be Ogrhen. That would be funny.

Could it be the dwarf in the concept artwork.=]

Although it will probably not happen, I still have a request.

I would like a Yandere as a romantic interest. For those who do not know what the yandere archetype is, it is a girl who is sweet, loving and super devoted, but... if you so much as look at another girl, the Yandere girl will go on a homocidal rampage that only ends when one of the three of you are dead. If the two survivors are you and the yandere, the yandere will be clingy and insane from then on. They are fun.

I'd like to add something else:

It would be nice to see the romances develop naturally throughout the game. I mean in DA:O you could romance Lel without ever taking her with you, with very little talking about her and you just by overwhelming her with gifts. I guess that's cool, but it would have seemed more real, in a sense, if when she was out with you there was some talking between the two of you, some quips here and there, some playful joking and flirting.

That make sense or am I jabbering again?

I want an Elven LI. It´sucks enough that I can´t play an elf, I want at least date one......

That's a Shianni clone. I'd be fine with that.

Well I hope we get some diversity in romances.

Human
Elf
Dwarf
maybe a desire demon
QUNARI
Everyone gets a race they like. I for one thought female dwarves were the sexiest race in Origins.

Seems like Bioware always uses the same formula of the jerk girl with special powers lover and the boyscout warrior guy.
