Does that mean your going to have another lesbian save the world?
Trust me, lesbians are so good at this "save the world" thing.

I mean, if there hadn't been romacne would I actually care if Alistair died? No, I probably wouldnt. I was taken in from the moment he gave me the virtial rose. Romance adds emotion and emotion connects you to the game.
I am not saying that boys dont like the romance, but it seems to me that people forget girls are playing this game to. We like that heart-melting stuff. Dont want romance? No one is telling you to raise their approval so you can go Sims 2 style and woo-hoo in there tent.

Really? I'm not trying to be judgmental or anything, but this kind of attitude toward NPCs baffles me. I was unable to romance Sten, Morrigan, or Shale. But Sten declaring me his "kadan" was a crowning moment of heartwarming. Morrigan leaving for good at the end of DA:O made me so sad--she was like my big sister. And even Shale's grudging friendship, especially after the Anvil of the Void and her loyalty quest, almost had me tearing up. Surely that has emotional impact too? Or is it really only romantic feelings that do it for you?

Yeah, I guess I do find those a BIT heart-warming to.
But if I had to choose between what made my heart melt more - Morrgian leaving or Alistairs rose? The latter would win. Most games have friend-ships with characters/companions/NPCS/ whatever you want to call them but I must say due to the whole romance thing in DA:O it was one of the only games I actually really felt emotion too. Possibly one of the only games that made me cry aswell

DA:O isn't the only game with romanceable companions, ya know. Most of BioWare's other games have them too. I can agree with you to a certain extent in some of the other games where due to (IMO lazy) design choices, you miss out on NPC interaction if you DON'T romance them. Examples include NWN, KOTOR, vanilla BG, and the Mass Effect series.
Sorry if I feel like I'm belaboring the point, but WHY is it that friendships aren't as emotionally engaging for you as romances? In DA:O, a lot of the friendships are just as well-developed, and contain as much emotional content as some of the romances do. Or is it just that Alistair's cuter?

I hope there is romance. The fact that in Awakening you couldntt even TALK to your companions was stupid, let alone not being able to romance them. (Nathaniel for the ladies, anyone?).
You could talk to them, just not anytime you wish. I get why that bothered people, but in some ways being able to talk to your companions whenever you want is overrated. Eventually, you run out of dialogue options and you get this:
"Hey Alistair, I have some questions about Grey Wardens, even though I've been one for a few months now and you've pretty much told me everything you know."
"Ask away!"
"...Nevermind."
I mean, if there hadn't been romacne would I actually care if Alistair died? No, I probably wouldnt.
I romanced Alistair in my game, and I can assure you, he is not the only person in my party that I cared about.

The men here aren't that into romance. If they were, we'd keep hearing complaints about how DA2 is NOT going to be the "Search for Morrigan game"--
Oh wait...

I don't really have any hopes beyond there being some variety (at least two choices) and that the character interaction and dialogue is interesting. Oh, and the love interests should be different from your DA:O love interests. So no apostate mages, Orlesian bards, Antivan assassins, or Templars this time around for your love interet. Maybe change the races up a bit as well. For example for a straight male PC in DA:O there were two female human LI options. Maybe this time around one should be an Elf or some something like the Lady of the Forest.
I don't agree with this, really. Alistair never actually became a templar, and not all apostate mages are like Morrigan (I would actually argue that she was atypical). Another Orlesian bard and Antivan assassin would be stretching it, but there is room for variety in most of these character types.
Also, I will point out that a female elven love interest for male PCs is hardly unheard of for a BioWare game, even if there wasn't one in DA:O. You could say that the lack of one was actually one way DA:O was being "different."

True, but I still like that a lot better than the Awakening "I have to find a specific bush or statue or view to click
on before I can have a chat with my pals" system. It made me feel like a tourist guide!

Mass Effect 1 got bashed because some overzealous moral guardian heard that it was a 'sex simulator' and blogged about it, raising hell. They never played the game, and even admitted it afterward. Everyone jumped on board without even viewing the content. Never-the-less, Bioware has backed down even though the entire premise for the thing was a total fabrication. Probably because all the people that jumped on it in the first place are too vain to admit they were wrong and will make another ruckus if Bioware does another ME1 rendition.

GAH I wish people would get over that. Bioware made a nice tastefull sex scene and they had to go ruin it. Now Bioware is too much of a wimp to do any good sex scenes in their video games. ITS A RATED M GAME BAH!

Exactly. It's an 18 so should be allowed to show adult content. How come in a movie of similair age rating, directors can show full-on, animal esque sex scenes and it's perfectly normal, whereas the anti-game industry bandwaggoners go mad at the mere sight of some skin in a game. I wish some of these developers had more balls and didn't pander to the critics comments - after all it's the customer who should be satisfied

I agree with you, Sable.
For me, the mass expectation of romance within every single Bioware title after Jade Empire has distilled that side of the writing for me somewhat and I too find more poignancy within those moments of plutonic respect.
Personally, having my companions approach me as hard-earned confidant in DA:2 and reveal their secret loves for one another for a change would be far more refreshing.

Plenty of games have nudity. GTA TLaD had a guys dick showing for an entire cutscene, God of War always has nudity, RDR had a sex scene where everything was shown. I'm not wanting a sex simulator lest anyone make that assumption, I want games to be respected as an entertainment medium. Even though video games are the biggest profit makers in the entertainment industry everyone sees them as being for kids. The ME sex thing is the perfect example. It's rated M, which is basically R for movies but when an M rated game shows ANIMATED side boob everyone freaks out. An R rated movie has a nude sex scene where you can see REAL breasts no one gives it a second glance. ****ING DOUBLE STANDERS HOW DO THEY WORK? I think when the generation from the 90's gets old enough to have kids and be controling things is when gaming will be respected. Every new big thing goes through this time period where older people get scared because it's new and they don't understand it.

I agree with this, there is a very prevelant mindset in society that always associates games with kids, there's rarely any outcry for games where you can dismember and decapitate, but nudity will surely be the harbinger of societal decline, I know you feel this.

When they announced it I was disappointed too, but after I played it I had to agree with that choice.. (and consider that I am a HUGE fan of romances in game)
The story, the events, everything in that game give you the feeling that you are "rushing", therefore I didn't find the right climax for a good romance. It would result rushed, like the rest of the game.
In DA:O the pace of the story was slower, you felt like you had all the time for grow up feelings for someone, plus you had the camp,.. How can you image to have a romantic dialogue whit someone in front of a grey wall of Vigil's keep's hall? Nah.. At least if we had private rooms for the character, but the problem in my opinion is really that the game was really to short to have a reliable romance..
Don't worry that DA2 will have all the right conditions for great romances like we could already enjoy in DA:O

So true! Those scenes were great, very well done.
IMO, if you're going to do what you did on DA:O, it'd be better to just fade the screen to black and not show anything.
