Now that others have talked about it, I do think it was not just the VO but a general sense that Shepard was meant to be a guy.  And I get the same sense thus far about Hawke.  Even the name sounds butch, versus Cousland, Amell, Surana, Mahariel....

I don't entirely get this argument.  Hawke is a last name--people generally don't pick their last names to fit their gender.

Sounds like something you do to spit off a bridge.

I'm on the fence with this--I don't mind the surname, but if people throughout the game refer to you "Hawke", it does indeed sound like they're calling you by a male name. I don't think I'll mind it so much, but I see where Addai is coming from. Whereas a name like Amell or Cousland sounds pretty gender-neutral (even if Cousland is a ridiculous name to call someone).

Personally, I really hope my romance interests don't call me "Hawke" right before I sleep with them.

Hawke is a a genuine Olde English surname. If it sounds silly, that's something you're bringing to it.

Which doesn't mean that Bio was necessarily wise to pick that particular name, of course.

I'm aware of that, but it might feel weird to be addressed as Hawke by everybody in the game. "Commander Hawke, we need you to defend the castle!" "Save me Hawke, you're my only hope" "This isn't the last you've seen of me, Hawke!" "I love you, Hawke!"

I'm sure dialogue will flow better than this, but it sounds just a little goofy for me. I'm aware that I'm probably nitpicking about it and this trifling detail likely annoys me in particular more than it might others.

LOL! The fact that writers keep having to come on the forum and tell people that really illustrates just one of the ways this PR campaign has been completely mishandled.

I have this inexplicable desire to write a mod replacing all references to Hawke with 'dude.' I know. I need more sleep.

Not everyone reads the forum religiously, and many don't at all. Those people would never gueass you can play Hawke as either gender from the PR.

To be fair, there's a few people who just pick up the game after hearing this-or-that about it still don't realize ME allows for a female Shep. And the game has been out years.

Heh, all that means is that they're tryong to market DA2 the same way they marketed ME, and that was pretty bolloksed, too, although without quite as many ill-conceived statements that were almost guaranteed to create fan rage. I haven't seen this much foot-in-mouth since SYFY brought out Stargate Universe.

Wow, that is a frightenly good comparison. For the first time since the announcement i'm slightly worried about the new direction. Man this sucks.

I agree, one thing I loved about DA:O was how often it acknowledged my gender.  Again, this is something a lot of guys (though not all, obviously!) probably won't get, but as a female player, that was indeed a very nice touch.

This is what captivated me in the first place.  I've gotten used to playing male characters (and some of my favorite games only have male characters) but it was still a thrill to be acknowledged as female.  I think I may have actually done a little happy dance.

You dare to ask?!

It's just a nickname Hawke has picked up around the boards, summarizing the awesome ramped manliness we're being promised in the early promotion, and probably having something to do with this dude.  But it amuses me to say his name as if he were the goofy jock with a heart of gold from Arrested Development.

Leave it to men to cultivate an endless fascination with their dangly bits.

I was thinking about this discussion and the other one about same-sex relationships, that despite the fact we'd be able to customize, having a more preconceived, iconic character in and of itself shoulders out the "minority" conception of the character.  There were very few origins where I felt it was more appropriate to play as a male versus a female.  If anything, it seemed more dramatic to play city elf as a female, and more interesting to play a Dalish elf and dwarf noble as a female because of the origin romances with Tamlen and Gorim.  (edit: although as male DN you had the noble hunters etc.)

And, only the female mage gets the "templar crush" subplot (with Cullen).  Not a romance per se, but it is a romantic plot.

I can definitely understand the apprehension some females must have about Hawke, even though you can choose to be female. In Origins, you were shrouded in anonymity. You were The Warden, and regarded as such. You could be anyone. Hawke is Hawke, there really isn't any room for ambiguity.

As such, it's hard to envision Hawke as a female - because you just know that that's not the person the writers/developers had in mind. Kind of like Shephard in Mass Effect I guess. You CAN be female, but we all know that Shephard is male.

Ugh, I hate me and trying to connect thoughts with words. I'm not even sure if this makes any sense whatsoever.

I'd prefer to reserve judgment on this.  Whatever one thinks of Shepard, the developers have said more than once that Hawke is a less defined character than Shepard.  Right now, they know everything about the game and we know almost nothing, so for now I'm deferring to their opinion.

That's a really loaded statement that you just made there. In the "Girl Thread", no less. I'd start backing away now.
