Why being limited to one race in Dragon Age 2 actually makes sense.

The problem is that the whole racial thing in Dragon Age felt very superficially done.

I played as an elf first, and aside from bits of sporadic racist pieces of dialog, I hardly felt like someone whose race had been enslaved not long ago. When I played as a human on my second playthrough, I hardly noticed a difference.

While the origin stories were very tightly put together, there was very little continuity afterwards.

Having Bioware control your character's surname, race, etc., allows them to put together a more personal experience that lasts throughout the game.

The fact is that Dragon Age was a huge game, and if Dragon Age 2 is as long, it would be impossible to create tightly knit experiences for the many races that people want to play as.

As long as Dragon Age 2 is a deep PC RPG, I can see this as something that could enhance the experience.

I care more for aesthetic reasons than anything else, hopefully the character creator gets a significant upgrade to allow more variety.

Humans seemed to have had more in the grand scheme of things (plotwise), they were more connected to the plot and had direct involvement with Loghain instead of just hating him for Ostagar. Dwarves were fun in Orzammar but little else, Elves were.. humans but with pointy ears.

Chances are, a tool kit will also allow elves and dwarves.

I always prefer being an elf given the choice. Just a personal preference. So it's rather annoying that they took that away.

The other thing is that since most of the people posting here are humans, the majority of Dragon Age 2 players will find it easier to identify with their protagonists. Of course, the trolls on these forums will be left in the cold. :-P

edit:

All joking aside, I always use the elf class as well, so that does suck, as I love creating elven archers.

They could have created a similar origin story for all three races, if they had chosen to (much like the Orlesian Grey Warden), but I suspect that being human is going to be part of the story (although I'm very relieved that Hawke is not the Old God Baby.)

I'm just happy that I finally got the human commoner origin I always wanted!!!

I have always picked human as well, and it sounds like they're going the mass effect/KOTOR route, a pre-defined back story and race but you pick gender, looks, personality, etc. Not a bad thing as I hugly enjoyed ME1.

On another note though I'm a little dissapointed that you can't, from the little we've been told so far, import you DA:O character like in ME2. hopefully the choices you picked in DAO are imported into the other, especially if it picks off right where the blight ended, ie the end of DAO. maybe bump into your DAO character if he is still alive.

It's a different and legitimate experience, but it's not why I play Dragon Age.

I like coming up with motivations, personalities, playstyles, etc for my characters and playing them out... it's what makes replaying the game so much fun for me. One character's the noblest knight to ever live with a strong belief in the Maker, another one is a spiteful mage with no love for the chantry or the maker who likes to wreak a bit of havoc once in awhile.

With Dragon Age I can do this, I can create a myriad of characters in the awesome fiction and have them be who they are consistently throughout the game.

With Dragon Age 2 and a more focused narrative, replaying the game is suddenly less interesting because there's perhaps a little bit of wiggle room but there's no where near as much room to play the game from a different perspective.

Mass Effect 2 is the first Bioware game I haven't replayed, and I've no desire to even do so. There's no reason for me to play it again. Most of the decisions don't even have any consequences show up in ME2 and it's all supposed to matter in ME3 (See rather than having the consequences show up in the same game they can extend it to the next game!) and there's no reason to change how I interacted with my party members since there's no benefit to do anything other than what makes them loyal and no role playing reason to justify doing something counter productive.

I play Bioware games for a specific reason, if I wanted to play a more focused narrative like The Witcher, I'd play The Witcher. (And I do, and I very much love that series. CD Projeckt does some things Bioware has proven that they don't know how to do though, such as true moral ambiguity and deliberate outcomes for your actions)

clearly you havent played DAO to the fullest, there are quests evrywhere that have racial conflict in, not to mention conversations with civilions in every city- especially playing as an elf

:Di hope that you could be a Quinari or an Appostate in DAO2:D
