Baldur's Gate is a good example of this. Same inventory, same rules, just more classes, more spells and more weapon and equipment options as the sequels came around. Since then Bioware hasn't made sequels themselves (KotOR 2 and NWN 2) or feels compelled to gut the mechanics and..."streamline" the game like in Mass Effect 2. I fear they are gutting out DA:O now to appeal to what they consider "average gamers." I hope I am wrong.
I actually liked ME 2, but it felt awefully small without the customization to weapons and abilities. Some of it was tedious, yes, but some was quite nice. I liked swapping out barrels and ammo types to make my sniper rifles take down enemies quickly.

Depends on what you mean by "let me down". If minor issues that I wish had turned out better count, then sure, plenty of times.
If you mean major disappointments, well, there was the NWN1 campaign. Only Bioware game I stopped playing halfway in disgust.
Same here. I've had plenty of minor squabbles with BioWare games. The only major fail I can remember is NWN. Basically, as far as I can tell, though, this is how the cycle of BioWare games tends to go.
1) BioWare announces new game.
2) NERD RAGE.
3) Periodic updates on the game
4) Periodic NERD RAGE for every update, accompanied by prophecies of calamity and dooom about BioWare ruining the game forever, EA being the spawn of Satan and Cthuhlu, and Chris Priestly and the rest of the dev and mod team eating babies
5) Game launch
6) 95% of fanbase, critics, and more casual gamers love the game
Rinse, lather, repeat. It hasn't changed for a while now, and I have every bit of faith in BioWare that the cycle will continue for DA2

Of course, the mental image of many throusands of people simultaneously beginning to stagger around in a black cloak before screaming 'NOOOO' will be keeping me amused for the rest of the evening. Thank you.

Awakening was also a disappointment.
And the only DLC I've really thought worthwhile so far was Leliana's Song.
So, yeah, BioWare's going to have to earn my faith for this one, and they're off to a bad start.

Personally, I don't like that you can directly control the companions in DA:O and I think ME 2 are a little to light on the RPG element, but it doesn't make them any less than amazing games.

That's the best case scenario, yes. For all we know they could pull a Blizzard on and reallocate all their resources to their newfound money maker, not releasing another game for a decade.Dave of Canada wrote...

Bioware did let me down, when they chose to make KOTOR into a freaking MMO. Other than that, I have enjoyed every product I've bought from them.
I see TOR as a necessary evil, imagine the money they'd rake in if it surpassed WoW - now take that funding and support their other games with it.
I doubt it would actually happen, but I'm usually the pessimist.

Yes, yes they have. All DA content after the original game has been subpar. So how is this going to be different?

This is a full game, not an expansion.
And I agree, TOR does look amazing.

I don't know, I've never seen it quite so bad right after the announcement. Sure, there is always RAGE after a new game hits the shelves, but not even the Mass Effect 2 hate train really hit its stride until the Grunt and Subject Zero character videos came out.Sable Rhapsody wrote...

Right now, all we have on DA2 is one paragraph of advertising-speak and 5 bullet points, but the forum is already aflame. I'm beginning to think we have unused stores of RAGE left over from ME2 that are being used up on this.

What I think is kinda funny is how BioWare had set up DA2 to lead into what fans really want--a remake of BG2--and they didn't deliver. Or maybe they will, but doesn't look like.

Yes, because Blizzard took the billions of dollars they made from WoW (Bliz makes near 200 million dollars a month off of subscriptions, alone) and released some excellent, quality games.
Oh wait...
They haven't released a non-WoW game in six years? The last being TFT in '04 and WC3 in '03?
Well, that's okay because SC2 is right around the corner, and with all the time and money they have, it'll be freakin' spectacular! Heck, it's been in development for over half a decade.
What? Blizz pulled most of the team off of SC2 as response to WoW's popularity? So a company of around four *thousand* employees only had about 50 people working on SC2 for the longest time? Woops!
TOR doing well will not mean other quality products. If anything, it will mean that more of BioWare will be folded into the MMO market so that EA can siphon off the real money--especially from the WoW fans who are starting to grow disillusioned with an aging game.
