Surnames seem to be kind of rare in Ferelden, at least- Alistair has one (sort of) since he's royal but other than that, it seems like only the Dwarves might use it regularly.
I'm not going to lose sleep over it, but I wish they'd chosen something other than Hawke. Don't ask me why, but it seems jarring. I like the surnames our PC's have in DA:O because they're not something you're going to hear in our every day speech. I hear Hawke and I suddenly imagine Bruce Willis bursting through the doors and belting out a song. :/

Aww no,don't change it! My first character will be appropriately named 'Tomma'.
I'm going to nick that for my character!*cackles* Seriously. I'm crap at coming up with names, and this is as good as it gets.
Anyway. Hawke does sound cheesy, but it is no deal-breaker. It just sounds like someone tried to come up with something "generically cool" rather than something flavorful. Aeducan, Cousland, Mahariel. Those were strong surnames which carried a certain flavor that fits the setting.
Agreed, I personallyl oved the surname Aeducan, plus I can't think of very good female names with a surname of Hawke that fit into the era of Dragon Age
I agree! Aeducan was the coolest last name in the entire game. I also liked Mahariel since my middle name is Uriel--kind of fit, huh Uriel Mahariel.
Anyways, I guess females can name their warden Lady Hawke, huh, huh!

Tbh I think "Hawke" is more of a nickname instead, and you'll find out his real name as the story progresses, he is the last survivor of... something. Maybe we'll find out as we get more footage

Just a thought: a more generic surname could mean a name that's appropriate for an Elf, Dwarf OR Human.
That way they can do their Shephard thing, AND make us tree-hugging Elf-lovers happy.

I agree with Dansayshi.....Hawke does sound more like a nickname or code name.....
As an actual last name....it just sounds a bit plain....and a bit too modern. It doesn't sound exotic like Amell or Mahariel or "medieval" like Cousland or Aeduncan.
I used to name my female mage in DAO Alana Amell.
Does Alana Hawke have the same ring?
Aila Hawke maybe?
hmm.......

Hawke is a stupid name. No matter how engrossing the narrative is I will be thrown out of it the moment someone says that name.

I lived through being constantly called "Sparrow" by Theresa the entire time during Fable II, so being called "Hawke" doesn't bother me at all.

Mike Hawke sounds like a porn star's name, and probably is.
Ser Hawke, aching from battle, pulls his sword from the body of his enemy, rejoicing in the fact that he once again was victorious in a battle of swordplay!
*shakes head* Corruption, tis sweet.

I have a sneaking suspicion that changing Hawke's name would kind of set them back a few months.

I think Hawke is fine, but I am having a few issues coming up with first names that sound really good with it (names that aren't jokes or references, I mean) and still sound natural in the DA setting.
Well on the plus side, we have like 8 months to work on it.

I hated being called by anyone (even by my best friends and by my lover, and even when every other characters of the group was called by name) by my surname in Mass Effect, and I would hate it in Dragon Age even more, since in a fantasy characters are usually known by their names and not surnames like in modern or sci-fi sets (Loghain, Alistair, Flemeth, Eamon versus Captain Anderson, Udina, etc).
Besides, if the devs have to give our pcs a surname they could also give him a name, just like Obsidian did in Alpha Protocol. I don't care to give him a name which no one will ever use, and actually I don't mind if I can choose my character's name or not anyway... after all, I didn't choose mine, either.
This is not a very important matter in the judgement of the game of course, but still it's not so nice to have every single character who called you by your surname. At least not to me.
