Whatever it is its awesome. Kind of like a spear of some sort. He has this barbarian look to him which I appreciate since I had hoped DAO would have a Barbarian origin.

I say it's a cross between a mage staff and a sword. He might be an arcane warrior. His clothes from the trailer look similar to the mage robes avatar item for xbox.

Its a completely fictional sword/staff combo. there doesnt exist a counterpart in real life because.... there is no magic in real life so no magical staves. It is closest to a very small (by very i am very very) glaive. real glaives are meant to give its wielder range over his opponents sword, so it is much larger than a normal weapon, it also has less of a 'blade' than this sword/staff does because it would weigh too much.

Glaive, Naginata, Sovnya, Svärdstav, Voulge, these are all things that Hawke's weapon could be called. It's a polearm, simple as that.

For those of you worried that this weapon is like the sword from DA:O trailer and isn't available in game, I recently heard that the Staff of Parthalan available for signing up for the newsletter is the weapon from the trailer. maybe someone can check it out.

There are other exemples of bladed-staffs, even if they're not exactly like the one in the trailer.
