Some other people (like me) simply hate the poor story that ME2 offers.

The majority prefers ME2 over ME1. There proof on lots of poll and User Votes on lots of sites are higher for ME2

But yeah, most people openly list their reasons.
Some of the most common are an awful main plot, and far too much emphasis on cover based shooter combat. I certainly share some of these views, and ME2 was a massive disappointment for me.

The plot for me is why it is just about my favorite game... which i guess is the main point of confusion with me its the one area I see little to complain about and yet I see the most hatred against in... whatever each to his or her own

i personally prefer me1 over me2 but im not one of those rpg people you meant, i know rpgs can be very different i just liked that me1 had some sort of customization whereas me2 had none except for what weapon to use which there wasnt much choice of either, also the story in me1 was was superior and i think the health system in me2 is horrible, but thats just my opinion, also dont get me wrong i still love me2 it is an absoulutly brilliant game.

Yup, now that the massive overhyping is pretty much gone over ME2, thoughts like this crop up on many of the gaming sites I visit. People dont "hate" the game, but anyone claiming its a "vocal minority" and "the vast majority prefer ME2" is denying just how many people are willing to come out say ME2 just didnt do it for them as much as ME1, despite its technical and gameplay flaws.

Someone having a different opinion (even a minority opinion) does not make them a troll:unsure:

Some of them aren't, but others like Smudboy and Kalfear bash ME2 while arrogantly refusing to listen any evidence or reason and thinking they're always right

This is true, however lots of posters try to make their points across in a obnoxious, rude and arrogant fashion. Wich kinda ruins it for the legitimate posters.

I think Mass Effect 2 is an impressive game in a lot of ways. It's a really well-polished and satisfying shooter. Many of the characters are great. The structure is clever - it manages to integrate what would otherwise be side quests into the main arc. It had that characteristic BioWare care: lots of great little touches, details, and in-jokes.
It also loses some of the strong points of the first Mass Effect, and creates some new problems. We're all familiar with the complaints about inventory and the loss of RPG elements, complaints I generally share. The little changes that diminish immersion bug me too, as well as the loss of admittedly-flawed elements like the uncharted worlds (which could have been improved, sure, but didn't need to be eliminated entirely). Yes, I miss the elevators. Yes, I think end-mission screens are silly. I understand that many people feel differently.
There are plenty of people who use the Gears comparison as an insult. I'm not one of them. I think the first Gears was an incredibly effective third-person shooter - lots of fun, satisfying mechanics, pretty decent atmosphere (with admittedly thin characters and story). The second was overstuffed, but that's irrelevant to the discussion here. The use of Unreal means ME is going to get Gears comparisons, and the shift toward the shooter end of the spectrum for ME2 makes those comparisons even more likely. I think as far as so-called "Gears clones" go, ME2 is actually very effective mechanically. It's not as good, but few games would be. I have a bigger issue with the level design. Parts of ME2 felt like sloppy reproductions of levels Gears did, and did better. The most egregious example was Jack's loyalty mission, which was written very thoughtfully but implemented from a level design standpoint like a poor copy of the factory from the first Gears.
Without getting into spoilers, I also couldn't stand the very end of the game. I'm hesitant to use this phrase, but it was almost a jumping-the-shark moment. I understand that games should be fun, and that there are more important qualities than plausibility, but that ending came dangerously close to breaking the existing fiction of the Mass Effect universe. I really, really hope Mass Effect 3 takes itself a little more seriously.
There were a lot of great moments in Mass Effect 2, and a lot of great elements. I just felt disappointed in the game as a whole, as much as I can appreciate the work that went into it.

I'd say there's so much discussion because Mass Effect is an ambitious series and 2 games in, no one really agrees on/knows what they want from the games.
Yep. The problem with doing a sequel to ME1 is that ME1 fans aren't very unified about what they like. Bio decided not to just play it safe with ME2. The natural result is that they pleased some folks and displeased others.

^ Eventually some Mod will tell you to go and read this thread.
Bioware is better than ME2, end of story.
