Before I begin, I realize that you marketing guys probably don't like suggestions. With that said, please hear me out anyway, because what I'm asking for isn't unreasonable.

With Mass Effect 2, to avoid spoilers you pretty much had to unplug your modem for 6 months because BioWare constantly put out spoilers for the game and within an hour those spoilers were all over every major gaming website that operates in English. Because that is the case BioWare needs to be extra careful with what spoilers it chooses to release. Anything that involves the resolution of a mystery or a plot twist should be kept silent, please.

Going back to ME2 for a second, you guys completely ruined the Dr. Okeer and Archangel recruitment missions. "Shepard, go and recruit this Krogan scientist for your team." Wait, no, I know that's a load of bull because BioWare already told me about every single character and that the Krogan party member is Grunt. The surprise of the mission was ruined months before I bought the game. "Shepard, the mysterious Archangel is taking out badguys on Omega. Get to him, find out what he is about, and recruit him for the mission." No mystery here! BioWare couldn't control themselves and just had to post a video clip showing that Archangel was Garrus. So much for mystery and surprise! Is spoiling the mysteries of the game really necessary for the marketing campaign? Can't you leave some mysteries left unsolved for the player? Please?

Now there are somethings that SHOULD be spoiled. For example if you are going to announce a character please include information regarding whether said character is a romance option and which sexes can romance him or her. These boards get torn apart by bitter speculation, and the romance options always get leaked pre-release anyway. Always. We knew who every romance option was in Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 before those games released because other sites found out and leaked it. Telling us who is and isn't a potential romance target and which of them are bisexual would prevent a lot of pointless drama on these boards, and considering that you guys seem to be incapable of keeping this a secret until the game releases anyway, why not just tell us which characters are romance options and which are bisexual as you announce them?

Try to remember the ****storm caused by Mr. Hudson when he decided to tell us over a BestBuy chat that there are not bisexual romances in ME2 and that there weren't even any in ME1 as a line of damage control. The response wouldn't have been so bad if you guys didn't let the expectations for romances build up for half a year only to shoot everyone down at the very last second.

http://meforums.biow...=144&highlight=

Look at this. 93 pages of screaming and complaining because of a few poorly chosen and poorly timed words. And that's just one topic on the subject. You guys could prevent this. If you just let history repeat itself, then all you're going to have is your romances leaked to the net again, and these boards turned into a drama war zone for a couple of days again with the poor mods forced to sort through the thousands of posts that result from it.

Thanks for your time.

Half of that would be beneficial to this thread: http://social.biowar...index/3055459/3

I imagine there will be more topics like that every other day. This is a passionate issue for a lot of users (and there's nothing wrong with that) and BioWare should put it to rest as soon as possible.

I have to agree. I was extremely surprised by the amount of spoilers for Mass Effect 2. I would expect it from a gaming website with their own gameplay trailers (IGN, Gametrailers), but from the publisher? The launch trailer, even though it was probably my favorite trailer of all time, was rife with spoilers and of course, I just had to watch the video that showed Garrus in ME2. Ugh, if only I had that thing from Men In Black so that I could erase my memory.

I'd unplug my modem if it wasn't tied up to the bomb in my chest.

Agreed, even Blizzard and their World of Warcraft Burning Crusade expansion wasn't leaked as much as Mass Effect 2, and that's the most popular MMO of all things

Erm... ME2 had nowhere near as many pre-release spoilers as DA:O. The Violence Trailer for DA:O actually spoiled almost the entire story premise and showed pretty much every dramatic cutscene even one from right near the end. I really hope they don't do that ever again.

ME2 rumour spoilers pretty much came down to who was going to be the fricken team and romanceable and were nothing to do with the actual story spoilers.

Yeah, it has been a problem for a long time now and not just with ME2. (I just used ME2 as an example.)

And while you're at it, don't ever pull a Mhairi again please!

We're an obsessive bunch, as if you couldn't tell, and we're going to go and get all overexcited about everything that leaks out. We admit it, and have come to terms with it. So don't take advantage of our easily excitable nature! :)

It's really hard not to give out spoilers in trailers as trailers require to give the viewer a sample of the games content, so if that's the case then simply do not watch trailers.

Problem solved.

The Normandy being destroyed and Shepard dying wasn't plot related? The beginning of ME2 would have been so much more shocking without Mr. Hudson telling everyone he could that Shepard dies in the beginning.

That's a very good point. The opening Collector attack scene should have been one of the most dramatic and shocking scenes in the game, but because BioWare decided to right out spoil it for us, it didn't feel like a big deal at all. *Sigh*Image IPB

my only suggestion is not to use cinematic stuff that will not even appear in the game:

example is the "travel on the snowy mountain" DA trailer

Actually, I disagree. Things like the Sacred Ashes trailer are really good ways to market the game and get people pumped without spoiling anything. I imagine that Blur trailers cost a pretty penny, so it's probably impractical to expect everything to be like that. Still, anything that promotes the game that doesn't involve massive spoilers is a plus in my book.Image IPB

Actually mr Indoc, you bring up absolutely true and fascinating points.

Me, I'm going to stick around until GameInformer comes out, and from then on I'm going to avoid the forums like the plague, simply because it lets you know WAAAY too much.

I avoided the forums on ME2 up until the week before the game came out, got on, started getting spoiled, and had to leave. But a lot of the 'shocking' stuff was already spoiled for me.

Don't want that to happen again... I'll have to join the ranks of the casual gamer, and not pay attention to a game until IGN/Gamespot writes a preview or hands-on.

I completely agree with the OP. At this point it's a war between wanting to know more about DA2 (of which we _know_ next to nothing ATM) and not wanting to be completely spoiled. For DA:O, they spoiled the Brecilian Forest quest and even the Broodmother, that (for me) was one of the most horrifying moments in the game itself -- and would've been even more so, had I not known exactly what to expect. Even the Sacred Ashes trailer spoiled the dragon, which was a bit of a letdown.

An obvious argument is to simply steer away from the videos and other information, but it's pretty difficult to be an active member of the community and not hear about what is going on in the marketing. Also, buying a game blind is not exactly an appealing thought. Even knowing which trailers include heavy spoilers beforehand would be a big help.

At least it doesn't say "Be strong like a Trojan."

why can't they just make trailers with ingame cinematic? i kinda awaited when that trailer's version with my own main character would happen and it was a major letdown when i realized it never gonna

I have to agree with this.  I didn't follow ME2 at all before it's release, so in effect nothing was spoiled for me.  If I decide to buy DAO2 I'll most likely do the same.

They could! However, I hope that they don't. Any interesting in-game cincematic they post would likely spoil that part of the game. Understand what I'm saying here?

from that trailer yo ualso already knew you will go to a snowy mountain

i don't say they have to give out major spoilers, i hate it if trailers give out any spoilers to begin with, what I hate is to get false advertising, because that event/video was never in the game i felt betreayed, it is like a bad car salesman or if you buy your cereals and it lacks the promished toy or whatever

Revealing that the player will go to a mountain isn't any more of a spoiler than revealing that the player will go to a town. Revealing why the player has to go to the mountain and what happens at the end of that journey would be the spoiler.

So if you bought a box of Frosted Flakes you would feel cheated if it didn't come with a talking cartoon tiger? Because that's how it's advertised. They get a big talking cartoon tiger to sell the product. Tony the Tiger does not come with every box unfortunately. Just his picture. Perhaps you would like to rethink your position?Image IPB
