Is anyone else really disappointed that we can't choose race in DA2?

And seriously, how many games have you played if you restrict yourself so much?
LOL! Not many. That was why I was so pleasantly surprised by DA. I had finally found one of the few games that got it. Too bad it was dropped after the first game.

It's also rather disturbing to me that Bioware would disregard one of the key elements that makes this game stand out from all those other set-character games --the variety and depth of the different cultures (and the attachments we form to the ones we adopt), the amazingly diverse range of experiences that are possible over any number of replays-- and just throw it away.
My thoughts exactly. The problem with the game being too "unique", though is that it becomes a "niche" game, and niche games tend to not make as much money as those that appeal to a wider audience.
I hope they have something else planned for DA2 that will make up for this,
Currently, it seems like they're relying on their revamped combat system to draw in new players, and their epic storytelling to keep their current players. I've played plenty of good, linear, single player RPGs, and the Elder Scrolls series is a pretty good single player, sandbox-style RPG. I can certainly fathom that DA2 could be like that. The origins certainly added replayability to the game, but replayability isn't a source of income. You buy the game once, you get one story. The end.

But I have trouble seeing how customization makes the game appeal LESS to gamers. I mean look at one of the best selling games of all time, The Sims series in which the player can customize everything, and you can see that there are a lot of people out there that love customization. Of course I wouldn't expect that amount of customization from a story-driven game like DA, but to give us less than we got in the first game? I don't see how that would make the game more popular.

Exactly. There was a reason that Origins was my favorite game, ever, that I've never played Mass Effect, and that I wasn't interested in KOTOR2. I tended to open play games like Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Thing is, Origins has taken the shine off those for me. The play feels darn lonely without companions.

The problem is you're think like a gamer not a CEO with a pile of papers from focus groups. Look at popular music today, talent and quality are meaningless. What sells is mediocrity, blandness, something that's been watered down to appeal a little bit to lots of people but cater to nobody in particular. The general public will buy it because you tell them to and because others tell them it's popular. It's as simple as that.

I can't fathom a deal breaker for me, at this point. I'll be sad to see features that I like go away, but I still trust Bioware to come through with a good story. If nothing else, I'll play through DA2 once and then move on to another game. Really, that's what I was doing before Origins came along.
I won't know until it's released, and I've read the fan reactions. I'm not going on trust like I did with Awakening. And if this is more of an action game than an RPG, or minimizes interactions.... I might not be interested.

Honestly. I am waiting for Witcher 2 and Starcraft 2 to come out. I will play Mass Effect 3 and SWTOR, but I probably won't play Dragon Age 2. it has nothing to do with the changes ( which I like ) but I am getting bloody tired of the model Bioware has used OVER AND OVER AND OVER again for RPGs, even in Mass Effect 1 and 2. ( though they have a saving grace those two ).
The thing I really like about the Witcher is how your choices take at least a few hours to affect the game, while with Bioware the change is instant. ( though this does not apply to Mass Effect, since many choices there only show the outcome in the next game, and it's the reason I like the series so much ).

Me too! I love open worlds too, and then I got DA and though the world was no longer open I got to choose exactly who I was in this world. And now I had friends on my journey too! And I was hooked. This is also my favorite game. It's like DA combined the best of two worlds...freedom to choose your story and an epic story to experience. I personally thought it was the perfect combination and am saddened to see it diminished in the new game.

I played a Witcher demo and was so put off by the battle animations that I could not play it (and I usually don't abandon games over graphics alone, so I don't know what happened). At any rate, since seeing trailers for Witcher 2 (which looks really good), I am probably going to give the Witcher series another chance. And eventually I'll get around to playing Mass Effect.

Those battle animations in the Witcher show how sword fighting is actually in reality. ( as close as it can get in a game anyway )

It's just really depressing! It MIGHT not be a deal breaker. If they get rid of romances...Then I probably won't buy it. How would this be any different than other random generic RPGs then? Poor human commoner rises to fame and glory. Yaaay! Awakening was so lonely!
I'm just glad you get to be female. I was worried about that, due to their nice marketing of only the male! T__T

That might be, but the squatting-run-with-your-sword-held-WAY-over-your-head thing was just too weird for me. Sometimes its good to sacrifice reality for fantasy. I don't know, maybe it's not as bad as I remember.
Edit: Okay, looking at it on YouTube, that animation is as bad as I remember, however the rest of the combat looks pretty good!

I don't usually play human, either, so I was surprised to find that I actually liked DAO's humans. But then... I hated fantasy dwarves before DAO and now I love them.

I didn't realize how much a love story impacted how much I like a game until I played... I think it was Final Fantasy 12 that didn't have much in the way of a love story... and I really missed that aspect! The romances really do a lot to invest your character's emotions into the story and care about saving the world (or at least just saving your LI).

I actually usually play male characters anyway, and most linear RPGs have male leads, so I'm used to it.

Yeah, I'd like to give this series another chance. Between school and modding, though, it's going to have to wait.

I was told a lot of good things about Witcher, but after trying it I put it away and never gave it a second thought. Between horribly clunky combat (Madden field goals come to mind) and downright Sandal-esque voice work, I just couldn't tough it out.
I'll keep an eye on Witcher 2. CD Project seems to really care about their games at least and has been all over bug fixes and expanding and introducing freebies into existing projects, so I'd like to see them succeed.

Yeah...the Witcher was released with a lot of bugs, but they fixed most if not all of them by now. This is a big + for me for any company.
