Is anyone else really disappointed that we can't choose race in DA2?

As if I needed a bigger headache . . . . hopefully this game won't turn out like Fable 2.

That would be genuinely depressing.

Not happy to hear that. I generally don't like to play as a human. I think I've only finished one human (of any flavour) playthrough so far.

The thing that really worried me was the mention of graphics and the look of the concept paintings.

Oh well, will reserve judgment on the rest of it and see if I spend or save my money come March 2011.

I'm not bothered. I'd be more up in arms if you couldn't choose a gender. :P

I was a bit surprised when I first heard but it didn't really bother me. I loved playing elves in DAO, but a change of pace wouldn't make me hate the franchise. I'm actually looking forward to playing a more specific role in DA2. Sometimes I'd feel a little overwhelmed with the amount of origins in DAO.

I have MANY disappointments. Even though I almost always play as human, I'm sorry to see them change it, as it seems to be part of the general trend of abandoning the things I liked about Origins in favor of moving away from RPG to action. Theres a reason I never bought either of the Mass Effect games.

Errant basically summed up how I feel about the info that has been released thus far about DA2.  I didn't like the changes in the game style in Awakening or Leliana's Song.  Long story short, if I wanted to play Mass Effect I would play Mass Effect.

Well, I would have taken it better if the first game was the same. It's just to have all these choices of who we want to be in the first game (each race had at least two different beginnings) and then to have it all taken away is really disappointing to me. Also I wouldn't mind playing as a human if that was all there was in the DA world, but with all of the different races I like to choose which one I want to play. Plus in my opinion it limits re-playability. One of the reasons I have played DA so much is the ability to be everything from human nobility to the lowest class of dwarves. If DA had just a male or female human of the same background to choose from, I wouldn't have played it nearly as much.

I hope we get to at least choose Hawke's height lol. Not everyone is freaking six foot tall. I liked the elves because they were short, but not as short as the dwarfs. I just hope we still get character customization--I don't like the way that Hawke looks in the concept picture on the website. I also wonder how they will implement him as a mage, or will we have to be a warrior Hawke--that would suck even more...

I can almost guarantee you that you won't be able to choose Hawke's height. They virtually have to give Hawke one standardized height or it will become too difficult to do kiss/hug/tent animations.

Yeah, figured as much since all the humans are six foot in Origins. I at least hope that we get a better faceial customization tool--akin to that of Oblivion.

I am a little disappointed but its not a deal breaker for me depending on the situation in the game's story.  I am for the moment adopting a "wait and see" policy.  We have only just found out what its going to be about and there will be lots more information incoming.

I will miss being an elf (I have a hard time getting into dwarves) but I wasn't overly fond of elves in the game either unless they were mages.  I enjoyed the City Elf Origin but once in game found it hard to get any past Ostagar.  And the Dalish Origin was my least favorite but I was able to finish the game a couple of times on a dalish elf.

As for dwarves I managed to get one DN past the first treaty (Orzammar) and my DC got to enter Ostagar and then got deleted.

By default my favorite race to play is human I think because I can identify with them better.

I really dont care about choosing a race or anything else. The fact that I cant play my character from DA:O means I wont be purchasing DA:2

I could almost handle only one fixed origin but the lack of a race option is frustrating. If it was a soundset issue, I would think that really only male elves would need a special soundset. You could easily have a gruff male human/dwarf voice though it might be hard to find a good male voice that would fit all three races.

I was really, really upset when I first read about DA2 and what the plans were for it. I still don't like what I'm hearing but I'll be cautiously optimistic about it. Bioware hasn't steered me wrong yet. And I do remember how upset I was when I heard what they were doing with Neverwinter Nights and how it wouldn't be BG3.

Not sure, it's still pretty open what they will do with it. For one, from the description it could turn out either more tactical ("think like a general") or more visceral ("fight like a Spartan"). In all reasonable expectation and trends the "general" is probably just rhetoric while "Spartan" is probably nasty, cheap Marketing-truth (they are still stuck in the 300 fad and ignored all criticism of their former gory marketing).

The character could either be very colourful and make some really world-changing decisions, or be just another voiced Shepard who can be unfriendly and sometimes choose between different friends.

More nervous then disappointed.

Couldn't have summed it up better.

I trust Bioware to make a solid game...to an extent. But seeing their last Dragon Age "game" attempt in Awakening, then limiting our customization options by saying it's no longer "our" story, but this "Hawke" person's story...is a little worrisome.

Personally, I played Dragon Age games to get my personal story, a first person narrative. If I wanted a "third person narrative", I'd play Mass Effect.

That is exactly how I feel. I'll still keep up with the news and may even try it out when the game is released, but so far color me disappointed. I don't like playing other people's characters. So DA2 better just be spectacular in other respects to make up for that.

I am very, very dispointed! And very, very angry!

The make your own PC is a awesome system. It unique and cool.

Dragon Age Origins 2 sounds bad and stupid.

I have no interest in playing as a human ever.

I want either a Elf, Dwarf or another race.

I refuse to play as a human beyond for the trophy.

I hoped Dragon Age Origins 2 was like Dragon Age Origins 1 but better with more races and classes.

If it really is making you play as a human I am not getting Dragon Age Origins 2.

It sounds garbage from what I have heard.

:(

I hope it is either a lie or it keeps the currant system of make your own PC but makes it better.

:(

You know, I never once heard on these forums that the players wanted only one origin to choose from. In fact a lot of people were hoping that the Qunari would be added as a playable race in DA2. Players wanted MORE options, not less. Most people will go along with it because most people play humans anyway, but it is not something I ever saw anyone asking for. >< The only reason I can think of for the decision is because the character will now be voiced.

Well, another reason could be if you're going to end up in a human-only position at the end of the game like if you were, say, heir to the throne or (from DA) if Anora and Alistair were the same gender but couldn't take the throne without marrying you so you'd have to be a human. Another possibility could be you have a set heritage. I know you're not playing as the OGB but if you were then you couldn't possibly be an elf and while half-dwarves could happen most OGB, I think, would be human as that covers all the female DR playthroughs, all the male 'I'm not doing it myself' DR playthroughs, and all the human/elf Warden DR playthroughs. Maybe you descended from an important human and thus are human yourself.

Ya, it's a pretty big deal breaker for me. What's funny is that I usually play as a human anyways as my main 'canonical' playthrough. But just not having the choice and being limited like that takes away from the game as a whole. I've replayed Origins multiple times as the different races and it's great, with the way DA2 seems to be going, IF I play it, I'll give it one playthrough and never touch it again, just like both ME games. The fact that I've beaten Origins four times and it's a 50 plus hour game is a testament to how refreshing the game was and how different each playthrough can be. The game sold very well, why change everything that made the game amazing?
