Which to play first?

I want to get Dragon Age Origins, and the expansion, but I am unsure how the expansion works.

For example, in titan quest, the expansion added to the original game, then gave more content. You never needed to play the original ever, becasue the original could be played through immortal throme(the expansion) and this included extras.

I'm wondering if in dragon age I would play the first game with no regard to the expansion, then just continue with the expansion, or I just get both and play the first one through the expansion, never playing the original directly, just through the expansion with extras.

If it's the prior, I would just get the first, then the second later. If the expansion makes the original game better, when player through it, i would just get both, so I would have a better expirience with the original.

I hope I posted this in the right place, and made myself clear. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers this question.

Note: I googled this countless times, with no luck. Perhaps I suck at searching.

Well you can't get Awakening without Origins so if you want to get Awakening you will have to get Origins.

The expansion really just boils down to 10 more lvls and cool armour.

I am familiar with that fact that the expansion is not standalone, let me try to rephrase my question.

Can the original be played through the expansion?

If yes, are there benefits that you get for playing it though the expansion(more party members, new quests/skills)?

For example in titan quest if you played it through the expansion, you got a storage box, and more weapon drops.

Yes and no, you lose your old party members excpt for one you have new skills and talents and new quests. You do get a personnel storage box.

Oh, so, the best way to go about it would be to play the original, then upgrade to the expansion after I beat it.

Is that correct?

The expansion doesn't add anything to the original while you are playing the original. So yes, just get origins first and have a great time with it.

When you transfer over a character from origins to awakenings, it creates in effect a new character with all new saves. You can always go back and replay the character in origins or play him/her in awakenings. If the character started below 18th level, it will be raised as well.

The problem is, you don't understand how the expansion in Dragon Age works. It doesn't change anything in the original game. If you start a campaign in Origins, having Awakening installed doesn't make the slightest difference. Indeed, the expansion adds new territories, new quests, a whole new story. But events in Awakening take place after the events in Origins, and that means: AFTER you complete Origins, you go on to a new adventure in Awakening.

for clarification, the expansion is "a new game" not bonus content to the first game. you play through origins then import your character to awakening to continue the story.

OK, well that has answered the first part of the question I was going to ask so thanks guys,

Additionally: I can't tell if Awakening is working properly on my machine, I'm using Steam and I bought the collectors edition and Awakening at the same time (in a steam sale) but every time I try to start Awakening it seems to start Origins (it adds time to my Origins play but not my awakening as well so it's definitely playing Origins). So, do I have to get to a certain level or complete Origins before Awakening will run?

Is there any way to tell in game that I have Awakening installed before I complete Origins?

If you're playing on PC and you're comfortable with mods, it's possible to have Awakening abilities/specializations, armor runes, stamina potions, etc. all working in Origins.

You can access Awakening either via the New Game option (it should bring up a menu to choose between Awakening and Origins), or you can use the "Other Campaigns" option in the main menu to load it up.

Yes. In the "Steam Library", grey names are uninstalled, white are installed. If you double click Awakening and choose the "Launcher", then click "Configure" and then "Game", you should see two codes. If you want to check in-game, on the main menu click "Downloadable Content". If you go to the "Installed Content" tab, Awakening will show if it's been installed.

Firstly, thanks for your replies...

Hmm, I guess this means its not installed properly on my machine, or perhaps not assigned to my account. Other Campaigns is grayed out. I don't get the option of which campaign to play when I start a new game either, just takes me to the character creation stuff.

Following your advice, I do have Awakening listed in my Launcher>Configure>Game with the CD key listed there...

Awakening is not listed on my DLC installed tab.
